      • Valorization of pikliz: a spicy meal garnishment in Haitian cuisine

        The biochemical process of fermentation (zymology) is widely practical for foods and beverages. This metabolic process involves microorganisms (bacteria) and their enzymes in the preparation and preservation of foods. Many studies have shown that fermented foods and beverages have various documented health benefits to humans, such as being high in vitamin b, and, among other benefits, having atherogenic and anticarcinogenic properties. This communication discusses the significance of fermentation in Haitian cuisine by focusing on pikliz—a spicy fermented meal garnishment that is widely popular among Haitian dishes. This analysis provides relevant information on Haitian cuisine while examining the underlying mechanisms, compositions, properties, nutritional values, and potential health benefits of pikliz. This spicy meal garnishment represents the regional, ethnic, and national identity of Haitians living in Haiti and abroad.

        Pushing the limits of lithium bis(oxalate)borate/acetonitrile using 1- ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate for supercapacitors

        Supercapacitors provide us with enormous power output for energy storage. Their energy output however still remains quite low compared to other energy storage materials like the batteries. This paper reports a highly stable liquid electrolyte which is composed of mixtures of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate(EMIBF4) ionic liquid with highly stable lithium bis(oxalate)borate LiBOB/acetonitrile( ACN). The electrolytes display remarkable supercapacitive performance at a high voltage of 3 V. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that EMIBF4 helps to reduce the bulk resistance and charge transfer resistance across the electrode surfaces by facilitating high ionic diffusions across the electrode/electrolyte interface. The high stability and high ionic conductivity of the electrolytes reflected in the good cycling performance tests at 2.8 V with a maximum delivery capacitance of 19.5Fg-1 after 1000cycles at a high scan rate of 200 mVs-1.

        Combined Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Pressurized Whey and Exercise Training in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Randomized, Controlled, Double-Blind Pilot Study

        Pressurized whey supplementation, by its antioxidant and nutritional properties, may improve exercise tolerance and potentiate the effects of exercise training in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 22 patients with COPD were allocated to receive active pressurized whey or placebo (casein) dietary supplementation for a 16-week period. Patients continued their usual physical activities for the first 8 weeks, whereas they were subjected to an exercise training program for the remaining 8 weeks of the study. Patients were evaluated at baseline, after 8 weeks of supplementation alone (time point, 8 weeks), and after 8 weeks of its combination with exercise training (time point, 16 weeks). The constant workrate cycle endurance test (CET), potentiated quadriceps twitch force, mid-thigh cross-sectional area, and Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (CRQ) were used to evaluate the effects of treatments. The inflammatory (C-reactive protein and interleukin-6) and oxidant/antioxidant (protein oxidation and glutathione) blood profiles were also characterized. At week 8, there was no increase in CET time in either group. At week 16, there was a statistically significant increase in CET time in the whey-only group (P<.05). Further, at week 16, there was clinically significant improvement in the Dyspnea and the Mastery scales of the CRQ in both groups. Also, the Fatigue and Emotional Control scales of the CRQ showed clinically significant improvement in the whey-only group. Study interventions did not modify significantly the systemic inflammatory and oxidative stress markers that were assessed. Thus dietary supplementation with pressurized whey may potentiate the effects of exercise training on exercise tolerance and quality of life in patients with COPD.

        Lithium-silica nanosalt as a low-temperature electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries

        A lithium-modified silica nanosalt (LieSiO2, coded Li202) of hydrophobic fumed silica (R202) is synthesized to use as an electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) under low temperature conditions. The synthesis method consists of reacting the silica nanoparticles with LiH and consequently quickly reacting the conjugate silicate ions with 1,3-propanesultone as a surface stabilizer. The obtained Li202 nanosalt (2.5 wt%) is added into an electrolyte solution of 1.0 M LiPF6 dissolved in ethylene carbonate/ propylene carbonate/ethylmethyl carbonate/diethyl carbonate (20:5:55:20 vol%) þ 2 wt% vinylene carbonate. The electrolyte solution including the Li202 nanosalt shows higher ionic conductivity and superior electrochemical stability over 5 V, which is due to the stabilized surface group. The high-rate capability at 20 C of the LiCoO2/graphite cell is particularly enhanced by adding Li202 nanosalt. In addition, excellent cycle performance at 20 C endorses the use of Li202 nanosalt as a low-temperature electrolyte additive for LIBs.

        Lacunar Infarction and Small Vessel Disease: Pathology and Pathophysiology

        Two major vascular pathologies underlie brain damage in patients with disease of small size penetrating brain arteries and arterioles; 1) thickening of the arterial media and 2) obstruction of the origins of penetrating arteries by parent artery intimal plaques. The media of these small vessels may be thickened by fibrinoid deposition and hypertrophy of smooth muscle and other connective tissue elements that accompanies degenerative changes in patients with hypertension and or diabetes or can contain foreign deposits as in amyloid angiopathy and genetically mediated conditions such as cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy. These pathological changes lead to 2 different pathophysiologies: 1) brain ischemia in regions supplied by the affected arteries. The resultant lesions are deep small infarcts, most often involving the basal ganglia, pons, thalami and cerebral white matter. And 2) leakage of fluid causing edema and later gliosis in white matter tracts. The changes in the media and adventitia effect metalloproteinases and other substances within the matrix of the vessels and lead to abnormal blood/brain barriers in these small vessels. and chronic gliosis and atrophy of cerebral white matter.

        Determinants of Cocoa Export and its Effects on Local Prices in Cameroon

        ECM 분석을 통해 카메룬 코코아 수출시 GDP와 비교우위가 주요 결정요인임이 밝혀졌다. 수출시장에서의 환율변동에 따른 코코아 수출가격의 변동은 국내 코코아 가격을 결정하는 주요인이다. 가격변동에 따라 수출되지 못하는 코코아의 국내 시장 공급은 과잉공급으로 연결되고 이는 국내시장가격의 현저한 하락을 초래한다. Co-integration and Error Correction Model (ECM) was used to provide the evidence that the GDP, Export price and the Competitive Advantage could be the main determinants of Cameroon Cocoa export. The fluctuation in cocoa export price (exchange rate) plays a key role in deciding domestic price in that the cocoa product not exported has been supplied to domestic market and the excessive supply has made the domestic price drop significantly.

        Do Failure of Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation Precludes to Use Sacral Neuromodulation in Patient With Overactive Bladder?

        Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) after failure of transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (TPTNS) in patients with overactive bladder (OAB). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in 3 university hospitals and included all patients with OAB and treated with SNM after TPTNS had been tried between October 2008 and May 2018. The primary endpoint was the proportion of definitive SNM device implantation in patients with 50% objective and/or subjective improvement after a test period (stage 1). The secondary outcomes of interest were changes of the number of diurnal voids and nocturia episodes per 24 hours between the end of TPTNS and the end of stage 1. Results: Overall, 28 of the 43 patients included achieved at least 50% objective and/or subjective improvement during stage 1 and underwent an Interstim II implantation (65.1%). The mean daytime frequency decreased significantly from 10.3/day at the end of TPTNS to 7.8 diurnal voids/day at the end of SNM stage 1 (P=0.01). The mean number of nocturia episodes decreased from 2.5/night at the end of TPTNS to 2.1/night at the end of stage 1, but this did not reach statistical significance (P=0.18). There was no other parameter significantly associated with response to SNM Conclusions: SNM might improve OAB symptoms in most patients who experienced no or poor efficacy with TPTNS. History of failed TPTNS should not preclude the use of SNM in OAB patients.

        Cervical preneoplasia biomarkers: a conundrum for the community based gynecologic surgical pathologist

        The integration of high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) in the cell genome is an essential step in the oncogenic pathway of lower ano-genital HPV-related squamous preinvasive and invasive lesions. The expression of HR-HPV surrogate biomarkers of HR-HPV integration by immunohistocytochemistry (IHC) serves as a diagnostic and/or a prognostic tool of cervical preinvasive lesions. IHC is claimed to decrease the interobserver variability in the diagnosis of histomorphologically equivocal lesions, and to be helpful in evaluating the potentiality of regression, persistence or progression. The most common biomarkers used in cervical pathology are p16INK4a, Ki-67, the HPV capsid L1 antigen, and ProEXc. Critical review of the literature shows a great variability in the diagnostic accuracy, risk evaluation, and relative distribution of these biomarkers in low and high grade preinvasive lesions. Review of the literature suggests that currently dual IHC with p16 and L1 provide the best diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of lesions diagnosed histomorphologically as low and high-grade.

        Technical Efficiency of Rice Farmers using a Stochastic Frontier Analysis - A Case Study of Cameroon North-West Region -

        농업은 고용, 식량 및 생계를 목적으로 하는 카메룬 경제의 중심이다. 그러나 카메룬 농업은 낮은 생산성, 비효율성 및 수입에 의존하여 전염병에 시달리고 있다. 이러한 이유로 본 연구는 카메룬 북서부 지역의 쌀 농가의 기술적 효율성을 조사했다. 구조화된 설문지와 인터뷰를 사용하여 144명의 농부로부터 데이터를 수집했다. 기술 통계 및 확률적 프런티어 분석을 사용하여 데이터를 분석하였다. 확률적 프런티어 분석의 결과는 분산 매개 변수 (시그마 제곱 및 감마)가 통계적으로 유의하다는 것을 보여준다. 농장 규모, 비료, 노동 및 제초제의 계수는 긍정적이고 중요했다. 평균 기술 효율성 수준이 84%로 나타낸 것은 가용 자원을 효율적으로 활용한다면 쌀 농민의 기술 효율성을 16%로 증가할 수 있다. 비효율성 모델은 신용 액세스가 기술적 비효율 성과 부정적인 관련이 있는 중요한 요소임을 보여준다. 이 결과는 농민에게 생산성을 향상시키기 위해 신용을 제공하려는 정부의 노력 (SEMRY, UNVDA, ARFIC및 2세대 농업)과 일치한다. Agriculture is the mainstay of Cameroon economy as it serves the purpose of employment, food, and livelihood. However, Cameroon agriculture is plague by low productivity, inefficiency in production and dependent on imports. For this reason, this study examined the technical efficiency of rice farmers in Cameroon North-West region. Data were collected from 144 farmers using structured questionnaires and interview schedule. The Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and a stochastic frontier analysis. The result from the stochastic frontier analysis shows that the variance parameters (sigma square and gamma) were statistically significant. The coefficient of farm size, fertilizers, labor and herbicides were positive and significant. The mean technical efficiency level was 84 percent implying that rice farmers’ technical efficiency could be increased by 16 percent if the available resources are efficiently utilized. The inefficiency model shows that credit access is the significant factor that is negatively related to technical inefficiency. This finding is in line with government efforts (SEMRY, UNVDA, CARFIC, and The Second Generation Agriculture) of providing credits to farmers to improve their productivity.
