In the present study the in vitrohypoglycemic and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities of hot pepper fruits (Cap-sicum annuumvar. acuminatumL.) at different ripening stages were investigated. The mature, green-stage fruits had the high-est activity against .-amylase and .-glucosidase with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 55.88 and 76.11 .g/mL,respectively, while C. annuumvar. acuminatumin the prematurity green stage exhibited the highest acetylcholinesterase in-hibition property (IC50 . 84.30 .g/mL), using the Ellman method. This study highlights the biochemical rationale for chemo-preventive significance in health benefits when consuming this variety of pepper.

The aim of this work was to examine the chemical composition and antiproliferative activity of Salvia leriifolia Benth. and Salvia acetabulosa L. oils. S. leriifolia oil was characterized by 50 components, whereas 19 components were identified in S. acetabulosa. S. leriifolia oil was characterized by camphor (10.5%), 1,8-cineole (8.6%), camphene (6.2%), and α-pinene (4.7%). α-Pinene (52.3%), 1,8-cineole (27.7%), and camphor (6.7%) were the major components in S. acetabulosa oil. Both oils exerted a strong antiproliferative activity comparing with vinblastine against COR-L23 with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 7.5 and 6.5μg/mL for S. leriifolia and S. acetabulosa, respectively. Salvia oils showed an interesting activity also on C32 (IC50=6.3 and 9.1μg/mL for S. acetabulosa and S. leriifolia, respectively). S. acetabulosa was also found to possess cytotoxic activity against renal adenocarcinoma (IC50=6.8μg/mL). The results clearly showed that for both Salvia species the antiproliferative activity could not be related to the major abundant compounds. Consequently, the minor components may be involved in some type of synergism with the other active compounds.

Senecio ambiguus subsp. ambiguus (Biv.) DC. extracts were able to inhibit the in vitro proliferation of renal cell adenocarcinoma ACHN and hormone dependent prostate carcinoma LNCaP. The potential cytotoxic property of the plant was revealed by the methanolic extract action against LNCaP (IC50 of 5.51 µg/mL) and ACHN (IC50 of 38.95 µg/mL). The most potent cytotoxic activity (IC50 of 5.34 µg/mL against the prostate carcinoma cell line) was exerted by the dichloromethane extract. Through bioassay-guided fractionation of the dichloromethane extract jacaranone was isolated as the major active constituent. This quinoid showed a very strong activity against ACHN and LNcaP with IC50 of 4.32 and 7.39 µg/mL, respectively. Its structure was established by GC/MS and NMR analysis. The n-hexane extract showed an interesting inhibition on the proliferation of tumor cell lines an IC50 value of 5.23 µg/mL against LNCaP. Three compounds identified in the n-hexane extract such as nerolidol, a-humulene and g-tocopherol were found to be active aginst LNCAP with IC50 values ranged from 11.24 to 15.56
