A Regional Play of the Global Game: China’s Korea Policy and the Sino-American Relationship
Fei-Ling Wang 통일연구원 2005 International journal of korean unification studie Vol.14 No.2
This paper describes China’s policy towards the two Koreas in the context of the global game of the Sino-American relationship. It outlines the key motivations behind the making of Chinese foreign policy in general and the uncertainties and constraints produced by China’s relationship with the United States. As a result of its overall objectives in diplomacy, Beijing is seeking a shared strategic interest with Washington on the Korean Peninsula but prefers the continued survival of the DPRK regime and simultaneously develops ever-closer relations with the ROK. China’s basic policy towards the two Koreas remains in favor of maintaining the status quo as well as aiming towards the denuclearization of the peninsula. However, the uncertainties and complications of China-US/Japan relations profoundly affect China’s strategic calculations and Beijing may be ready to make major shifts in its policy on Korean unification and the North Korean nuclear issue, as its power grows and its relations with Washington and Tokyo become increasingly complicated. Self-management Experience of Middle-aged and Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Qualitative Study
Fei-Ling Wu,Hsiu-Chen Tai,Jui-Chiung Sun 한국간호과학회 2019 Asian Nursing Research Vol.13 No.3
Purpose: Diabetes mellitus has been either the fourth or fifth leading cause of death among Taiwanese adults during 1995e2015. Older adults with diabetes are at higher risk of developing diabetic macrovascular and micro-vascular complications. The purpose of this study explored the self-management experiences of middle-aged and older adults with diabetes through a focus group. Methods: Purposive sampling was used to recruit patients with diabetes from the metabolic outpatient clinics of medical centers and regional hospitals in Taiwan. Two focus groups, comprising a total of 23 participants, were employed to collect data, and group discussions were held a total of four times in an education room that was distant from clinical areas. Results: Three themes were generated from analysis of the collected data: (1) “listening to the voice of the body and observing physical changes,” (2) “re-recognizing diabetes and challenges,” and (3) “selfmanagement implementation dilemmas.” This study provided new insights into the experiences of middle-aged and older adults in Taiwan regarding their self-management of diabetes. Conclusion: Healthcare teams should be involved in the self-management education of patients with diabetes as early as possible to reduce patients’ anxiety and to develop more patient-centered, culturesensitive clinical skills. In addition to monitoring patients’ self-management, healthcare professor should pay more attention to patients’ successful adaptation to and coexistence with the disease.
China and the Prospects of Denuclearization of North Korea
( Fei-ling Wang ) 서울대학교 통일평화연구원 2018 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.6 No.2
This article interprets and analyzes the role of China in and the prospects of denuclearization of North Korea. Driven by its ruling party’s peculiar political interest of resisting, reducing, and replacing American power at the expense of its national interest of cooperating with the United States, Beijing has been alternatively facilitating (somewhat) and fettering (mostly) North Korean denuclearization to make the cause unavoidably long and arduous, if doable at all. The latest resumption of Beijing-Pyongyang ties, in reaction to the Trump-Kim summit, suggests that a fundamental change in Beijing’s strategic stance on the North Korean nuclear issue has taken place, making genuinely enabling peaceful denuclearization of the DPRK rather difficult as it would require literally a political change-of-heart in Beijing.
Neurotrophic Artemin Promotes Motility and Invasiveness of MIA PaCa-2 Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Meng, Ling-Xin,Chi, Yu-Hua,Wang, Xiang-Xu,Ding, Zhao-Jun,Fei, Li-Cong,Zhang, Hong,Mou, Ling,Cui, Wen,Xue, Ying-Jie Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.5
Objective: To analyze the capacity of neurotrophic artemin to promote the motility and invasiveness of MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cells. Methods: MIA PaCa-2 was cultured in vitro and studied using transwell chambers for motility and invasiveness on treatment with different concentrations of aArtemin or its receptor $GFR{\alpha}3$ were also determined. Expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin) was quantified using RT-PCR and Western blotting. Results: MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cell motility and invasiveness was significantly increased with artemin and its receptor $GFR{\alpha}3$ with dose dependence (P<0.01). MMP-2 production was also significantly increased (t = 6.35, t = 7.32), while E-cadherin was significantly lowered (t = 4.27, t = 5.61) (P <0.01). Conclusion: Artemin and its receptor $GFR{\alpha}3$ can promote pancreatic cancer cell motility and invasiveness and contribute to aggressive behavior. The mechanism may be related to increased expression of MMP-2 molecule and down-regulation of E-cadherin expression.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms located at microRNA (miRNA)-binding sites are likely to affect the expression of miRNA targets and may contribute to the susceptibility of humans to common diseases. Here 335 candidate lung cancer-related inflammatory genes were selected according to the existing literature and database. We identified putative miRNA-binding sites of 149 genes by specialised algorithms and screened SNPs in the 3'UTRs of these genes. By calculating binding free energy, we sorted 269 SNPs on the basis of the possibility of prediction. The proposed approach could help to easy the identification of functionally relevant SNPs and minimize the workflow and the costs.

A novel Streptomyces strain, L10, which is capable of producing natamycin, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Zhejiang province, China. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of rpoB gene and 16S rDNA sequences, as well as phenotypic comparison, strain L10 (CGMCC 2644) is proposed to be a previously uncharacterized strain of S. chattanoogensis. By screening a cosmid library of strain L10 and primer walking, a partial sequence of scnRI and the entire sequence of scnRII were obtained, which are orthologues to the pathway-specific positive regulator genes of natamycin biosynthesis in S. natalensis. The engineered S. chattanoogensis D1, generated by inserting an additional copy of scnRII into the chromosome of strain L10, increased its natamycin production by 3.3 fold in YSG medium and 4.6 fold in YEME medium without sucrose.
