        Phylogenetic and Expression Analysis of RNA-binding Proteins with Triple RNA Recognition Motifs in Plants

        The superfamily of RNA binding proteins (RBPs) is vastly expanded in plants compared to other eukaryotes. A sub-family of RBPs that contain three RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) from the Arabidopsis (24), rice (19) and poplar (37) genomes was analyzed in this study. Phylogenetic analysis with full-length protein sequences of 80 RBPs identified nine clades. The largest clade, comprising 23 members, showed high homology to human RBPs involved in oxidative signaling. Digital northern analysis revealed that Arabidopsis RBPs are transcriptionally responsive to biotic, abiotic and hormonal treatments. Northern blot analysis of eight Arabidopsis RBPs belonging to the tobacco RBP45/47 family showed that these genes respond to ozone stress. AtRBP45b, which shows closest homology to the yeast oxidative stress regulatory protein, CSX1, was expressed in multiple tissues. Two novel splice variant forms of AtRBP45b were identified by 3’RACE analysis. Based on RT-PCR, splice variant AtRBP45b-SV1 was observed only in response to mechanical wounding caused by pathogen or chemical infiltrations and was not detecta-ble in response to salt or temperature stress. Electropho-retic mobility shift assay demonstrated that recombinant full-length and splice variant forms of AtRBP45b bound synthetic RNA. Identifying in vivo RNA targets of AtRBP45b will aid in determining the precise functional role of these proteins during oxidative signaling.

        Sarsaponin Effects on Ruminal Fermentation and Microbes, Methane Production, Digestibility and Blood Metabolites in Steers

        The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of sarsaponin on methane production, ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestion and blood metabolites using three Holstein steers in a 3${\times}$3 Latin Square design. The steers were fed Sudangrass hay plus concentrate mixture at a ratio 1.5:1 twice daily, and sarsaponin (0, 0.5 and 1% of DM), which was given at 09:00 and 17:00 h daily by mixing with concentrate. Rumen samples were collected 0, 2, and 5 h after morning dosing. Ruminal pH was numerically decreased and numbers of protozoa were decreased linearly (p<0.01) by treatment. Ruminal ammonia-N was reduced (linear; p<0.05) and total VFA was increased (quadratic; p<0.05) at 2 and 5 h after sarsaponin dosing. The molar proportion of acetate was decreased (quadratic; p<0.05) and propionate was increased (linear; p<0.01) at all sampling times. Blood plasma glucose was increased and urea-N was decreased (linear; p<0.05) at 2 and 5 h after dosing. Methane was decreased by approximately 12.7% (linear; p<0.05). The apparent digestibility of DM and NDF were decreased (quadratic; p<0.05) and that of CP remained unchanged due to the sarsaponin. The numbers of cellulolytic bacteria were decreased (quadratic; p<0.05), while numbers of total viable bacteria remained unchanged due to the sarsaponin. These results show that sarsaponin can partially inhibit rumen methanogenesis in vivo and improve ruminal fermentation, which supports our previous in vitro results.

        New Challenges for the South African Textile and Apparel Industries in the Global Economy

        The full integration of the textile industry into GATT, which with some exceptions occurred on January 1, 2005, is likely to greatly impact the global textile and apparel industries. In particular, one prediction is that the South African industries are likely to be “decimated.” The actual effect on these industries will depend at least partly on the ability to take advantage of economies of scale and to be internationally competitive. In an endeavor to gain more insights into the future of these industries in South Africa, this study uses a cost function to investigate the presence of scale economies and the nature of input interrelationships. The findings include statistically significant economies of scale present in both industries and cross price elasticity estimates indicating that most inputs are substitutes for one another. The first result offers an opportunity to reduce unit costs if these industries can grow their markets. However, lower prices on imported intermediate goods will likely decrease the demand for domestic inputs. The cross price elasticities of demand are relatively low in some cases, consistent with domestic input market rigidities and international trade restrictions.

        NAFTA's Impact on the Mexican Automotive Sector

        The findings discussed here are the outcome of continuing research on the Mexican automotive industry and include data for several years during which the NAFTA was in effect. Key results include strong evidence of constant returns to scale in both the automotive industry as a whole as well as the vehicle assembly industry and a finding that the period after NAFTA was implemented has been associated with lower production costs. In addition, these data support the conclusion that capital, labor, and foreign intermediate goods are all substitutes for one another, as are capital and domestic intermediate goods, but that labor and domestic intermediate goods are complements. While evidence was found to suggest some increased responsiveness in domestic markets to both foreign and domestic input prices, other results give reason for concern about continuing market impediments in Mexico.

        In this papaer,we propose a three-dimension shape recovery method that works with a single image without prior information about an image, a camera or a scene. Three-dimension shape recovery can be produced from the depth map that is generated from the convolution between the 2D planar image and the texture gradient image. The experimental results have been presented demonstrating the 3D image’ surfaces and the comparisons of cross-section images between the 3D model from the digitizer and our proposed method.

        A Comparative Evaluation of the Anticancer Properties of European and American Elderberry Fruits

        European elderberry (Sambucus nigra), recognized in Europe for its health-promoting properties for many gen-erations, is known to contain a range of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and other polyphenolics that contribute to the high antiox-idant capacity of its berries. American elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), on the other hand, has not been cultivated, bred,and promoted as a medicinal plant like its better-characterized European counterpart. In this study, aqueous acetone extractsof the berries from these two species were fractionated and tested in a range of assays that gauge anticarcinogenic potential.Both cultivated S. nigraand wild S. canadensisfruits demonstrated significant chemopreventive potential through strong in-duction of quinone reductase and inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2, which is indicative of anti-initiation and antipromotion prop-erties, respectively. In addition, fractions of S. canadensisextract showed inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase, an enzymemarker related to the promotion stage of carcinogenesis. Analysis of active fractions using mass spectrometry and liquid chro-matography-mass spectrometry revealed, in addition to flavonoids, the presence of more lipophilic compounds such assesquiterpenes, iridoid monoterpene glycosides, and phytosterols.

        The Impact of Export Instability on Economic Growth: Evidence from Jordan

        To provide empirical evidence on the impact of export instability on economic growth in developing countries, this study estimated the neoclassical production function using data of the Jordanian economy for the period 1995–2019. Real exports, real capital, and export instability were the independent variables in the production function. To determine the appropriate methodology for estimating the production function, the study conducted some preliminary tests, including the Augmented-Dickey Fuller (ADF), on the study data. The results of this test indicated that all study variables were stationary at first difference. Therefore, the Johanson cointegration test was applied to determine that there was cointegration between the study variables since the results of the former test indicated that there was one cointegration vector between these variables. The cointegration equation revealed a positive and statistically significant impact of real capital, real exports, and an indicator of export instability on economic growth. The most important policy implications for these results would be reducing the geographical concentration of exports through the expansion of free trade agreements (FTA) to enhance the positive impact of the instability of exports on economic growth. Moreover, the study recommends strengthening export-oriented actions to achieve higher levels of economic growth.

        Determinants of Investment in the Jordanian Productive Sectors

        This paper aims to find out the main factors that are important in determining the size of investment in the Jordanian productive sectors. For this purpose, the study used panel data for four Jordanian productive sectors over the period 2000–2017. Also, fixed-effects modeling was carried out to identify the relationship between investment and its potential determinants. Empirical investigations of the four productive sectors reveal the following results: The real value of sector’s production and the real value of credit facilities have a positive and significant impact on investment, while the real interest rate has a negative effect on investment in the Jordanian productive sectors. Also, at the sector level, agriculture was more responsive to changes in the real value of credit facilities, while other sectors were more responsive to changes in the real value of sector’s production. According to these results, it seems that some policy actions should be taken to enhance the size and the role of investment in the economy. For example, policymakers should adopt a mixed policy and expand the provision of credit facilities, especially to the agricultural sector, to enhance agricultural activity in a manner that ensures the improvement of infrastructure and land reclamation.
