This essay examines Wen Yiduo’s configuration of an eco-poetics in the early 1920s in the broader context of transnational travelling and global industrialization. Through a close analysis of Wen’s poems and writings from two time periods: new poetry experimentation at the Americanized Tsinghua School in Beijing (1919-1922) and exploration for a new poetics during his sojourn in Chicago (1922-1923), Meng demonstrates that Wen’s experience of breathing coal smoke daily in Chicago precipitated a paradigmatic shift in his poetics. Negating his previously compartmentized worldview that privileged the spiritual and disparaged against the senses, Wen recognized the vital importance of bodily life and the complex interconnections between body, machines and nature. This shift of perspective enabled Wen to weave the air pollution in Chicago and the Daoist notion of human and nature into an eco-poetics that was an exact counteract to the industrial progressivism prevalent in China and abroad, then and now.
