      • Lycopene I―Effect on Osteoclasts:

        Leticia G. Rao,Nupura Krishnadev,Katharine Banasikowska,A. Venket Rao 한국식품영양과학회 2003 Journal of medicinal food Vol.6 No.2

Osteoclasts have been shown to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can stimulatebone resorption. We explored the hypothesis that lycopene, the antioxidant carotenoid fromtomatoes, can inhibit mineral resorption by inhibiting osteoclast formation and the produc-tion of ROS. Cells from bone marrow prepared from rat femur were plated into 16-well cal-cium phosphate coated Osteologic Multi-test Slides and cultured in a-minimal essentialmedium suplemented with dexamethasone, b-glycerophosphate, and ascorbic acid. The cellswere treated with varying doses of lycopene in the absence or presence of parathyroid hor-mone (PTH) at the start of culture and at each medium change (i.e., every 48 hours). On day8, mineral resorption pits were quantitated. Similar, parallel experiments were carried out in12 well plastic dishes to assess tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity. Resultsshowed that lycopene inhibited TRAP 1 formation of multinucleated cells in both vehicle-and PTH-treated cultures. Osteoclasts reduced nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to purple-coloredformazan, indicating the presence of ROS in these cells. The formazan-staing cells were de-creased by treatment with 102 5 M lycopene, indicating that lycopene inhibited the formationof ROS-secreting osteoclasts. In conclusion, we have shown that lycopene inhibits basal andPTH-stimulated osteoclastic mineral resorption and formation of TRAP 1 multinucleated os-teoclasts, as well as the ROS produced by osteoclasts. These findings are novel and may beimportant in the pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention of osteoporosis.69

Graphene as interface modifier in ITO and ITO-Cr electrodes

        Leticia A. Silva,Jéssica M.M. Luzardo,Sanair M. Oliveira,Rafael V. Curti,Alexander M. Silva,Rogerio Valaski,Rodrigo B. Capaz,Joyce R. Araujo 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.7

We explore graphene as interface modifier for electrodes in optoelectronic organic devices by measuring the electrical properties of ITO/graphene and ITO/Cr/graphene. For this purpose, exfoliated graphene (EG) was electrochemically synthesized and deposited by spray-pyrolysis. The built-in voltage (Vbi) values were 450 mV for the ITO/CuPc/Al reference, 750 mV for ITO/Cr/graphene/CuPc/Al and 1000 mV for ITO/graphene/CuPc/Al device structures. From these results, we estimate the work functions as 3.20 eV, 3.45 eV and 4.75 eV for ITO/ EG, ITO/Cr/EG and ITO. To understand how the work function changes, we carried out first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) where Cr work function (~4.2 eV) is not modified by the deposition of pristine graphene; however there is a substantial increase (from 4.2 eV to 5.2 eV), upon deposition of graphene oxide (GO), resulting from a complete transfer of O atoms from the GO sheet to the Cr surface forming a thin layer of chromium oxide.

Bi2InTaO7 compounds as promising photocatalysts for marine plankton removal

        Leticia M. Torres-Martínez,Isaías Juárez-Ramírez,Juan S. Ramos-Garza,Francisco Vázquez-Acosta,Ricardo Gómez,ZhengYi Fu,Soo Wohn Lee 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2011 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.12 No.1

The removal of marine plankton, red (Amphidium carterae), and green (Tetraselmis suecica) tide algae, by heterogeneous photocatalysis was carried out using pyrochlore-type semiconductors. The semiconductor, Bi2InTaO7 , was prepared by the solgel method and a solid state reaction. The XRD patterns evidence formation of the pyrochlore phase in the sol-gel materials calcined at low temperatures (600-800 oC). Nanostructured sol-gel materials were observed by SEM. The sol-gel preparation allowed the formation of the pyrochlore-type compound with specific surface areas (7-13 m2g−1) higher than the solid obtained by solid state preparation (< 5 m2g−1). Band gap (Eg) values between 2.1-2.7 eV determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy were obtained. Bi2InTaO7 photocatalysts prepared by the sol-gel method were able to eliminate Tetraselmis suecica and Amphidium carterae algae totally after 50 minutes of UV-irradiation, whereas Bi2InTaO7 by solid state preparation needed more than 1 h.

      • Lycopene II―Effect on Osteoblasts: The Carotenoid Lycopene Stimulates Cell Proliferation and Alkaline Phosphatase Activity of SaOS-2 Cells

        Leticia G. Rao,Linda Kim,A. Venket Rao 한국식품영양과학회 2003 Journal of medicinal food Vol.6 No.2

We explored the possibility that lycopene, a carotenoid that is abundant in tomatoes, has ef-fects on proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone for-mation. Human osteoblast-like osteosarcoma SaOS-2 cells were cultured for 24 hours, afterwhich varying doses of a water-dispersible microemulsion preparation of lycopene or vehi-cle of the same dilution were aded. The cells were further cultured for 24 to 14 hours, andthen the cell numbers were counted. Lycopene at 102 6 and 102 5 M had significant stimula-tory effects on cell numbers, compared with the corresponding vehicle treatment, at all timepoints from 24 to 14 hours. The effects of lycopene on activity of the differentiation markeralkaline phosphatase activity in the absence or presence of dexamethasone were shown to bedependent on the stage of cell differentiation. This is the first report on the effects of lycopeneon osteoblasts of human origin; the results may have important aplications in the preven-tion of osteoporosis.79

Psychosocial Risk Factors and Musculoskeletal Symptoms among White and Blue-collar Workers at Private and Public Sectors

        Leticia B Januario,Mariana V Batistao,Helenice JCG Coury,Ana Beatriz Oliveira,Tatiana O Sato 대한직업환경의학회 2014 대한직업환경의학회지 Vol.26 No.-

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate musculoskeletal and psychosocial perception and compare these conditions regarding the type of job (white or blue-collar) and the type of management model (private or public). Methods: Forty-seven public white-collar (PuWC), 84 private white-collar (PrWC) and 83 blue-collar workers (PrBC) were evaluated. Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) were applied to evaluate psychosocial factors. Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to assess musculoskeletal symptoms. Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT) was measured to evaluate sensory responses. Results: According to JCQ, all groups were classified as active profile. There was a significant association between work engagement and workers’ categories (p < 0.05). PrWC workers had the highest scores for all the UWES domains, while PrBC had the lowest ones. PPT showed that PrBC workers had an increased sensitivity for left deltoid (p < 0.01), and for both epicondyles (p < 0.01), when compared to the other groups. PrWC workers had an increased sensitivity for both epicondyles than PuWC (right p < 0.01; left, p = 0.05). There was no significant association in the report of symptoms across the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study showed differences in psychosocial risk factors and musculoskeletal symptoms in workers engaged in different types of jobs and work organization. Personal and work-related characteristics, psychosocial factors and PPT responses were different across workers’ group. Despite all, there was no significant difference in reported symptoms across the groups, possibly indicating that the physical load is similar among the sectors.

        Drug Sentencing and Racial Inequality

        Leticia G. Patino 전북대학교 동북아법연구소 2016 동북아법연구 Vol.9 No.3

The American Criminal Justice system has finally recognized, with strong help from the U.S. President, Barack Obama, the errors of its Criminal Justice System. This comes after decades of unfair prejudice and discrimination against a significant portion of the U.S. population. President Obama has always declared that changes were desperately needed. Recently, President Obama was able to make the necessary changes and did so quickly. As a result, a Drug Policy model was immediately launched throughout the United States of America and encouraged throughout the world, especially through our allies. The National Drug Control Strategy was created, allowing an expansion of treatments and assistance needed by some of the convicts. These treatments are now made available for those needing treatment. Current policies throughout the 50 states of America have begun to modify their criminal systems. President Obama’s plan to reform the National Criminal Justice System may have seemed, to some, to be folly. However, Obama’s leadership has led to several significant changes and reunification of some families. Further, The Justice System has vowed to discontinue profiling, another significant step to fairness within the system. This will be a large stride toward fair sentencing and a safer environment within the American Justice System.

Membrane technology for the recovery of detergent compounds: A review

        Leticia Suarez,Marıa A. Dıez,Roberto Garcıa,Francisco A. Riera 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.6

The food and beverage industry is a great detergent consumer, due to the extreme cleanliness demanded by this kind of industrial activity. Surfactants play an important role in detergent formulations and for this reason a significant part of this review is devoted to their recovery. Membrane technology has been selected as the most promising method for recovering these cleaning agents and, accordingly, the application of membranes for the recovery and reuse of waste cleaning solutions constitutes another important part of this review. Finally, several studies on the application of membrane technologies for the separation of surfactant compounds are also described.

      • Modelling the Ground WaterIinfiltration Process Using a Finite Element Seepage Analysis in a Landslide Located in Lajedo Parish, Flores Island, Portugal

( Leticia Moniz ),( Paulo Amaral ),( Filipe Marques ),( Ana Maria Malheiro ) 대한지질공학회 2019 대한지질공학회 학술발표회논문집 Vol.2019 No.2

The present work is presently being carried out at Lajedo parish, located southwest on Flores Island (Azores archipelago), a place where a series of landslides with slow kinematic characteristics have been observed, some of which put at risk people and property. In November of 2016, a hydrological and geotechnical monitoring network was installed at three landslides (#L1, #L2 and #L3), using vibrating wire and standpipe piezometers, tiltmeters, inclinometers and a rainfall station. Based on the acquired data in the last 3 years at Lajedo parish, and the physical and mechanical characterization of the deposits, through laboratory tests, it was possible to carry out a slope stability analysis to evaluation the stability conditions and the propensity for new instability situations based on limit equilibrium methods. Beside this, one of the monitored landslide (e.g., #L2) was investigated by modelling the ground water infiltration process and pore water pressure variations using a finite element seepage analysis. The effects of these variations were the input to compute the slope stability analyses over the time in order to analyse the factors that promoted slope instability. This study is part of a research project known as Decisionlarm, whose main objective is to develop a multi-technical monitoring system to support decision-making based on alert and alarm levels in the unstable zone by evaluating the effect of precipitation and the oscillations of water level in the potential failure planes capable of triggering landslides.
