Background: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a frequent cause of infectious colitis, usually occurring as a complication of antibiotic therapy, in elderly hospitalized patients. Is responsible for signifi cant morbidity and mortality, and remains at historically high levels, being a serious re-emerging pathogen. Methods: Retrospective study of adult patients admitted in the Medical Department of a Hospital Center, between 2005 and 2012, that meet the defi nition of CDI. Results: 100 patients were included, with an average age of 78, 6 years (± 10, 76), 68% of female sex. By age group 79,0% of patients were over 70 years and 48,0% exceed 80 years. The overall mortality of the patient group was 21%, being the mortality attributable to the infection by Clostridium as the main diagnostic 8%. The main risk factor found for the disease development was recent treatment with one or more antibiotics, 81% of cases, without a predominant class of antibiotic. Regarding the origin of the infection 56% were nosocomial, 44% associated with health care and 8% had origin in the community. In patients who started therapy with metronidazole, in 12% was switched to vancomycin (ascending to 50% in the patients that died from the infection). Conclusions: The epidemiology of CDI, is changing with increase infections in lowrisk patients, and the rising of the fatal cases. Indentifi ng CDI earlier is essencial, and saves lifes. Measures like prescribing antibiotics only when apropriate, test for CDI in patients with diarrhea and isolation, are crucial, specially with the alarming reality of the rising resistance to metronidazol, the possible future vancomicin resistence with its overuse, and the present lack of new effective therapeutic options, making this opportunistic infecction, a clinical challenge in the present and in years to come.

<P>Functional analyses of the Arabidopsis genome require analysis of the gametophytic generation, since approximately 10% of the genes are expressed in the male gametophyte and approximately 9% in the female gametophyte. Here we describe the genetic and molecular characterization of 67 Ds insertion lines that show reduced transmission through the male gametophyte. About half of these mutations are male gametophytic-specific mutations, while the others also affect female transmission. Genomic sequences flanking both sides of the Ds element were recovered for 39 lines; for 16 the Ds elements were inserted in or close to coding regions, while 7 were located in intergenic/unannotated regions of the genome. For the remaining 16 lines, chromosomal rearrangements such as translocations or deletions, ranging between 30 and 500 kb, were associated with the transposition event. The mutants were classified into five groups according to the developmental processes affected; these ranged from defects in early stages of gametogenesis to later defects affecting pollen germination, pollen tube growth, polarity or guidance, or pollen tube-embryo sac interactions or fertilization. The isolated mutants carry Ds insertions in genes with diverse biological functions and potentially specify new functions for several unannotated or unknown proteins.</P>

The postindustrial era brought new spaces whose lack of habitability soon led to call them non-places. These are transit spaces that often exceeded the human dimension, architectures that were frequently hostile to the body. Literature did not take long to incorporate them, also children’s literature. Airports, train stations, subway, began to populate the pages of books for children. The Sound of Colors, by Jimmy Liao, is an example of this. In this paper, this book has been analyzed, with an attempt to show the complexity of author treatment of the space. In this picturebook, a blind girl faces the everyday life in the subway stations. The whole narrative is developed between two interconnected worlds, the real one depicted by this non-place, and the other, poetic, by the girl. A qualitative methodology has been employed to study this work. Findings lead to thinking that current children’s literature spaces are increasingly multifaceted.

<P>Single-crystal X-ray diffraction has shown that the high-critical-temperature (<I>T</I>c) phase of the filamentary molecular superconductor (BEDT-TTF)2Ag(CF3)4(1,1,2-trichloroethane) [BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] contains layers of BEDT-TTF radical cations with alternating κ- and α′-type packing motifs. The aim of this study was to systematically review the scientific literature, with Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, of the articles found in the past 11 years on the gastroprotective role of fruit extracts in gastric ulcers induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Scientific articles published between 2010 and 2020 were included in this systematic review, including in vitro and in vivo models, to define the gastroprotective role of fruit extracts. Studies were selected by Rayyan using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct databases. The keywords for the search strategy were: ‘‘gastric injury,’’ ‘‘gastric ulcer,’’ ‘‘fruit,’’ ‘‘indomethacin,’’ and‘‘aspirin.’’ Twenty-two articles with animal models of gastric ulcers were included. The NSAIDs used were aspirin and indomethacin. To know the damage caused by these, the ulceration index and biomarkers, such as aggressive/defensive factorsinvolved in the gastric ulceration process, were measured. Most studies have shown that fruit extracts have antiulcer activity, with the most abundant metabolites being flavonoids, followed by terpenes and alkaloids. Possible antiulcer activities such as antioxidant, cytoprotective, gastric acid antisecretory, anti-inflammatory, or angiogenesis stimulant were declared, manifested mainly as a reduction of lipid peroxidation products, an increase in antioxidant enzymes and prostaglandins, and by the formation of a protective film through protein precipitation in the ulcer area. This systematic review demonstrates the importance of fruit extracts as gastric protectors.

Coil prolapse or migration is a rare but potentially serious complication that may occur during aneurysm embolization, with no standard management currently described. Here we describe our experience with the Embolus Retriever with Interlinked Cages (ERIC) device® (Microvention, Aliso Viejo, CA, USA) for the retrieval of prolapsed or migrated coils in a case series and Flow-Model analysis. First, a retrospective review was performed using our institution database for patients in which coil prolapse or migration occurred during aneurysm embolization, and data was collected and analyzed. Second, an in vitro Flow-Model analysis was performed comparing the ERIC device® with other stent retrievers for coil retrieval. In 2 cases, the ERIC device® successfully retrieved the displaced coil from intracranial circulation in 1 pass, after failure with other devices. In the Flow-Model, again the ERIC device® achieved success for retrieving a detached coil, whereas 2 other different stent retrievers failed to capture the coil after 2 attempts. The ERIC device® appears to be a safe and effective tool for retrieving a prolapsed or migrated coil from the intracranial circulation.
