        Understanding the Factors Affecting the Acceptance for Fermented Soybean Products

        The main objective of this study was to understand the factors affecting the acceptance of fermented soybean products. Seventy-six consumers rated the acceptance and perceived intensity of 4 types of Korean and 4 types of Japanese style fermented soybean products. The consumer’s food variety seeking tendency and the general attitude toward various fermented soybean products were measured. Ten descriptive analysis panelists evaluated the sensory characteristics of the 8 samples. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were applied to the data sets. Fermented soybean products consisting of sweet and moist sensory characteristics were preferred the most. The variety seeking tendency was not an effective predictor for understanding the acceptance of the products tasted in the experiment. K-means cluster analysis identified 3 subconsumer segments sharing a common preference pattern for the 8 samples within each group. These 3 groups somewhat differed in the consumption frequency, acceptance, and familiarity of various fermented soybean products in general.

      • Impact of Power Consumption in Sensors Life Time for Wireless Body Area Networks

        Wireless body area network (WBAN) is a communication standard optimized for low power devices and operation on, in or around the human body but not limited to humans used to serve a variety of applications including medical, consumer electronics, entertainment and other[1]. The challenge of WBAN is that the energy of the sensors is limited by the battery life that’s why the transmitting of data is not continuous for long time. This leads to poor efficiency of the WBAN because the continuous power decreasing is due to network operations. An algorithms such as MAC zigbee802.15.4 and adaptive reliable MAC are important to reduce the replacement of batteries many times and to save power consumption. In this paper we concentrated our study on some type of sensors, they are telosB, mica2, micaz, and imote2 depends on power consumption calculations using mat lab program and based on adaptive reliable MAC. We analyzed the sensors with several nodes and packet sizes, and calculate the lifetimes for all the sensors in WBAN. The results we obtained show a good performance of using Adaptive reliable MAC in Wireless Body Area Networks.

        Surgical Resection of Aggressive Angiomyxoma Manifesting as a Spinal Tumour: A Case Report

        Study Design: Retrospective case report Objectives: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of aggressive angiomyxoma presenting as a sacral spine tumour in a 51-year-old woman. Summary of Literature Review: Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare myxoid neoplasm of the perineum and pelvis in women of reproductive age. Extragenital tumours are extremely rare and have previously been reported in the head and neck, abdomen, lung and limbs. Materials and Methods: The authors reviewed the literature and described the clinical presentation and key aspects of management of this rare manifestation of aggressive angiomyxoma. Results: This patient was managed with maximal safe resection and close surveillance. Conclusions: Aggressive angiomyxoma may manifest as a spinal tumour.

        Fractal analysis and statistics of seismic generation rates: the example of the southern California

        The seismic generation rate, SGR, at southern California along the 1981–2007 recording period is analysed with the main purpose of finding out whether there exist some correlations between seismic activity before, after and along aftershock sequences triggered by mainshocks of high magnitude. The possibility that a mainshock could be triggered by another neighbouring mainshock and its aftershock sequence is also investigated. The analyses are based on monthly SGR series, obtained as the number of events detected every month along the recording period considered. These monthly SGR series are derived for three aftershock areas associated with Landers (June 28, 1992, Mw = 7.3), Northridge (January 17, 1994, Mw = 6.7) and Hector Mine (October 16, 1999, Mw = 7.1) mainshocks. The most relevant features of SGR series are investigated through various techniques: 1) the rescaled range analysis and the interpretation of the Hurst exponent in terms of persistence, anti-persistence and randomness; 2) time trend estimation by the Kendall-tau algorithm and assessment of their statistical significance by the Mann-Kendall test; 3) the self-affine character, derived from semivariograms, and the Hausdorff measure; 4) autocorrelation and power spectra; 5) cross-correlation and cross-power spectra; 6) the search for the statistical distribution best reproducing the empirical probability of SGR series. Additionally, a close look at plots of epicenters within the aftershock areas, distinguishing between periods of background and aftershock activity, permits detecting some features of the seismicity. Changes on spatial patterns of seismicity suggest that the effects of tectonic stress redistribution could persist beyond an aftershock period, at short and medium distances of the mainshock. This possibility would be also in agreement with cross-correlation results for SGR series.

        Valuation of banana peel waste for producing activated carbon via NaOH and pyrolysis for methylene blue removal

        The discharge of dye-containing industrial efuents such as methylene blue (MB) in water bodies has resulted in severe aquatic and human life problems. In addition to this factor, there is the accumulation of banana peel wastes, which can generate ecological damage. Thus, this research purpose a diferent method from the literature using the banana peel waste (BP) to produce activated carbon (ACBP) by NaOH activation followed by pyrolysis at 400 °C to remove methylene blue (MB). The material was characterized by TGA, XRD, SEM, BET, and FTIR. The infuence of dye concentration (10, 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 mg L−1) was investigated. ACBP presented a well-developed pore structure with a predominance of mesopores and macropores. This morphological structure directly infuences the MB removal capacity. The highest efciency for dye removal was in the MB initial concentration of 25 mg L−1, sorbent of 0.03 g, and contact time of 60 min, which were 99.8%. The adsorption isotherms were well defned by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The Langmuir model represented the best ft of experimental data for ACBP with a maximum adsorption capacity of 232.5 mg g−1. This adsorbent showed a comparatively high performance to some previous works. So, the banana peel waste is an efcient resource for producing activated carbon and the adsorption of methylene blue.

        들깨죽 제조를 위한 가열 중 클로로필과 카로텐이 지방질 산화와 토코페롤에 미치는 영향

        야채가 혼입된 들깨죽 제조의 시뮬레이션 연구로 볶은 들깨와 쌀, 물의 혼합물의 가열 중 클로로필(0.33 mg/kg)과 베타-카로텐(3.3, 9.9, 19.8 mg/kg)의 첨가에 의한 지방질의 산화와 토코페롤의 변화를 모니터링하였다. 시료의 가열과정 중 과산화물값과 공액이중산값이 증가하여 들깨죽 지방질의 산화가 발생하였음을 뚜렷이 보여주었으며 클로로필과는 달리 베타-카로텐은 농도의존적으로 지방질의 과산화물값과 공액이중산값을 감소시켰다. 들깨와 쌀, 물의 혼합물에 첨가한 클로로필과 베타-카로텐 및 시료에 함유되어 있던 토코페롤의 분해는 가열 시간에 대해 1차반응이었으며 베타-카로텐은 가열 과정 중 토코페롤의 분해를 억제하였다. The effects of chlorophyll (0.33 mg/kg) and β-carotene (3.3, 9.9, 19.8 mg/kg) addition to a mixture of roasted perilla seeds, rice, and water (30:45:225, w/w/w) on the lipid oxidation and tocopherol contents were studied during heating at 100℃ for 120 min to simulate cooking of perilla and rice porridge. Lipid oxidation was evaluated with peroxide values (POV) and conjugated dienoic acid (CDA) values, and chlorophyll, β-carotene, and tocopherols were determined by HPLC, POV, and CDA values were increased during heating, indicating the occurrence of lipid oxidation in the perilla and rice porridge. β-Carotene decreased the POV and CDA values of the samples in a concentration-dependent manner, while the addition of chlorophyll did not affect them. Chlorophyll and β-carotene which were added, and tocopherols naturally present in samples were degraded, following the first order kinetics during heating, and β-carotene protected tocopherols from degradation.

        매운맛 소스의 관능적 특성 도출 경향에 대한 교차문화 분석 - 한국인과 베트남인들을 대상으로 -

        Purpose: The present study was conducted to the derive sensory terms of seven spicy sauce samples for Korean and Vietnamese people, and define flavor characteristics and other sensory characteristics for each sample. Methods: Total of 9 Korean and 10 Vietnamese panelists were selected. Each group was trained, and to identify the product attributes, descriptive analysis were performed independently. Results: The descriptive analysis revealed that a total of 34 terms were derived for Korean people, showing significant differences in all attributes(p<0.05) similar to 33 terms for the Vietnamese, but with significant differences in 32 items, excluding the fiber characteristics of appearance(p<0.05). For both Korean and Vietnamese, the characteristics of “sweet flavor” could be affirmed to act as a factor moderating the characteristics of spicy flavor. In the case of the Korean people, the attributes of “burning sensation” and “acridity” were affirmed to be the texture characteristics related to nonvolatile spicy flavor, while the characteristic “spicy flavor” was recognized differently in terms of both flavor and mouth-feel in the case of the Vietnamese people. Conclusion: The results of this study show that Koreans do not use the word ‘spicy taste’ and other ‘spicy sensation (burning sensation and acridity etc.)’ separately, while the Vietnamese use the same word ‘spicytaste’ as well.

        Fractal behaviour of distances between consecutive aftershocks: the examples of Landers, Northridge and Hector Mine Southern California mainshocks

        Distances between consecutive aftershocks are analysed by means of mono- and multifractal theory with the aim of quantifying the complexity of the physical mechanism governing them, as well as their predictability and predictive instability. Hausdorff, Ha, and Hurst, H, exponents are determined by semivariograms and rescaled analysis, respectively. The exponent β of the power law describing power spectral contents is also quantified. These three parameters permit a generation of fractional Gaussian noise, fGn, simulating distances. The complexity and predictive instability of physical mechanism generating the series of distances is quantified by means of the correlation dimension, μ*, the Kolmogorov entropy, κ, and the Lyapunov exponents, λi, which are based on the reconstruction theorem formulation. Additionally, the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis, MF-DFA, contributes with a different point of view to quantify the complexity of the series, in terms of fractal spectral width, W, spectral asymmetry, B, and the critical Hölder exponent, a0. By one hand, the MF-DFA is applied to the complete set of distances characterising the whole aftershock process. By the other hand, the MF-DFA is applied to segments of the series of distances with the aim of determining the evolution of the complexity since the mainshock up to the end of the stress relaxation process. Finally, an ARIMA multilinear regression process is applied to obtain some improvements, in comparison with fGn simulations, on the prediction of distances. The database for this analysis is obtained from the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) catalogue. Three series of aftershocks equalling to or exceeding magnitudes of 2.0, assuring seismic catalogue completeness, and associated with Landers (06/28/1992), Northridge (01/17/1994) and Hector Mine (10/16/1999) mainshocks are obtained. It is worth mentioning that common mono-multifractal behaviour for the three aftershocks series is not detected, whatever aftershock periods or segments of them are considered.
