A new series of 1,4-benzodiazepine-2,5-dione structurally related to cyclopenin has been synthesized. The new compounds were assayed in vivo and in vitro for their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase enzyme and were found to have potent reversible anticholinesterase activity when tested in vitro for isolated frog rectus abdominis and guinea pig ileum in addition to increasing brain cholinesterase level in rats when percentage inhibition were tested in vivo, moreover compounds 5a, 5b, 5c and 5g were the most active. LD50 was performed for these derivatives and they displayed high safety margin.

Earthworms play an important role in soil fertilization, interacting continually with microorganisms. This study aims to demonstrate the existence of beneficial microorganisms living in the earthworm’s immune system, the coelomic fluid. To achieve this goal, a molecular identification technique was performed, using cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) barcoding to identify abundant endogenic earthworms inhabiting the temperate zone of Rabat, Morocco. Then, 16S rDNA and ITS sequencing techniques were adopted for bacteria and fungi, respectively. Biochemical analysis, showed the ability of bacteria to produce characteristic enzymes and utilize substrates. Qualitative screening of plant growth-promoting traits, including nitrogen fixation, phosphate and potassium solubilization, and indole acetic acid (IAA) production, was also performed. The result of mitochondrial COI barcoding allowed the identification of the earthworm species Aporrectodea molleri. Phenotypic and genotypic studies of the sixteen isolated bacteria and the two isolated fungi showed that they belong to the Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Buttiauxella, Enterobacter, Pantoea, and Raoultella, and the Penicillium genera, respectively. Most of the isolated bacteria in the coelomic fluid showed the ability to produce β-glucosidase, β-glucosaminidase, Glutamyl-β-naphthylamidase, and aminopeptidase enzymes, utilizing substrates like aliphatic thiol, sorbitol, and fatty acid ester. Furthermore, three bacteria were able to fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphate and potassium, and produce IAA. This initial study demonstrated that despite the immune property of earthworms’ coelomic fluid, it harbors beneficial microorganisms. Thus, the presence of resistant microorganisms in the earthworm's immune system highlights a possible selection process at the coelomic fluid level.
Validation of Simple Sequence Repeats Associated with Quality Traits in Durum Wheat

Over recent years, quality has become an important commercial issue for durum wheat breeders. Modern breeding methods are most efficient for producing and supplying the best quality raw materials to the pasta industry. Here we assessed the effectiveness of molecular marker-assisted selection of quality traits in durum wheat. To this end, DNA and quality trait markers were jointly used to analyze quality-related traits in a durum wheat collection. A total of 132 durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum) Mediterranean landraces, international lines, and Moroccan cultivars were analyzed for seven important qualityrelated traits including thousand-kernel weight (TKW), test weight (TW), gluten strength, yellow pigment (YP), and grain protein content (GPC). Additionally, 18 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers previously reported to be associated with different quality traits were analyzed. Of these, 14 (78%) were polymorphic and four were monomorphic. There were between two and seven alleles per locus, with an average of four alleles per locus. The average phenotypic variation value (R2) ranged from 2.81 to 20.43%. Association analysis identified nine markers significantly associated with TKW, TW, and YP, followed by eight markers associated with GPC, six markers associated with yellow index b, four markers associated with brightness L, and three markers associated with SDS-sedimentation volume. This study highlights the efficiency of SSR technology, which holds promise for a wide range of applications in marker-assisted wheat breeding programs.

In this study, the physico-chemical characteristics of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) produced by Arthrospira platensis were evaluated. Elemental analysis and a bicinchoninic acid (BCA) reaction indicated that the EPS were heteropolysaccharides that contain carbohydrate (13%) and protein (55%) moieties. Analysis of the infrared spectrum and elemental analysis revealed the presence of a sulfate group (0.5%). The UV-visible spectrum showed high UV absorption at 190~230 nm and a shoulder at 260~280 nm. In addition, this spectrum indicated that EPS can form aggregates with mycosporine-like amino acids and/or scytonemin. Gas chromatography analysis of the carbohydrate portion of the EPS indicated that it was composed of seven neutral sugars: galactose (14.9%), xylose (14.3%), glucose (13.2%), frucose (13.2%), rhamnose (3.7%), arabinose (1%), and mannose (0.3%) and two uronic acids, galacturonic acid (13.5%) and glucuronic acid (0.9%).
Fuzzy Fault Tolerant Predictive Control for a Diesel Engine Air Path

This paper proposes a Fuzzy Fault Tolerant Predictive Control (FFTPC) with integral action method fora class of nonlinear systems. The Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy approach is introduced as a modelling technique inorder to consider the active control methods adapted to linear models. The proposed control strategy is based on acombination between Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) control law and Model Predictive Control (MPC)where the T-S fuzzy aspect uses the Unmeasurable Premise Variables (UPV). A T-S fuzzy observer provides an L2norm estimation of system state vector and faults. The controller and observer gains are obtained by solving LinearMatrix Inequalities (LMIs) derived from the Lyapunov theory. The validity of the proposed Fault Tolerant Control(FTC) strategy is illustrated through an application to a Diesel Engine Air Path (DEAP) system.

The present study deals with the determination of optimal values of operating parameters such as the temperature of heating, the mass of the plant material and the volume of water leading to the best yield of electromagnetic induction (EMI) heating extraction of Algerian Thymus fontanesii essential oil. After an appropriate choice of the three critical variables, eight experiments leaded to a mathematical model as a first-degree polynomial presenting the response function (yield) in the relation to the operating parameters. From the retained model, we were able to calculate the average response, the different effects and their interactions. The maximum of essential oil recovery percentage relative to the initial mass of plant material was 1.69%, and was obtained at (140 oC, 250 g and 4.5 L). The chemical composition of the Algerian T. fontanesii essential oil under the obtained optimal conditions (140 oC, 250 g and 4.5 L), determined by GC/MS and GC/FID, reveled of the presence of major components such as: carvacrol (70.6 ? 0.1%), followed by p-cymene (8.2 ? 0.2%).
Cultural Colonialism in the Translation of Season of Migration to the North

Translations of non-Western works introduce other cultures to the Western world. Translation is understood to be an act of rewriting/creation, which plays a role in promoting the source language and culture. Tayeb Salih’s Season of Migration to the North is a Sudanese Arab-African novel, translated into English. From a postcolonial perspective, reading the novel in translation does not convey the qualities of the original work to the Western reader. The translation is rather a reconstitution of the text mediated by the differences in the culture of the target language and this determines the relationship between dominant and subordinate cultures through “transculturation.” This paper also addresses the question of whether the translation of literature conveys a true cultural presentation of the other, or whether the translator, in postcolonial discourse, acts as a colonizer of the text, a space open to colonization.
