Renal ischemia is one of the most common causes of acute renal failure. Four factors related to the pathogenesis of acute renal failure are vasoconstriction, decreased glomerular filtration rate, tubular back leak of filtrate, and intratubular obstruction. The cellular response to renal ischemic insults include decreased content of adenosine trihosphate, lipid peroxidation induced membrane degradation, alteration in cellular pH, and calcium or phospholipase induced mitochondrial dysfunction. Much attention has been given to the role of increased cellular calcium as a pathogenetic contributor to cell injury during ischemia. Author studied the protective effects of calcium antagonists on cellular injury during renal ischemia in rat. To investigate the protective role of these agents, author measured the amount of malondialdehyde(MDA) and the enzyme activities of free radical scarvengers-superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase from non-pretreated group and calcium antagonists pretreated groups in control, ischemia and reflow subgroups. The results were summerized as follows: 1) The amount of MDA in non-pretreated group was higher in the reflow compared with the control(<p<0.01). But, in all pretreated groups, there was no statistically difference in the amount of MDA. 2) The SOD activity in non-pretreated group was lower in both the ischemia and the reflow compared with the control (P<0.05). But, in both verapamil and trifluoperazine-pretreated groups, there was no statistically difference in the SOD activity. 3) Both catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities in non-pretreated group were lower in both the ischemia and the reflow compared with the control (P<0.05). But in all pretreated groups, there was no statically difference in both catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities. These results suggest that free radical mediated ischemic injury by renal artery clamp in rat can be protected by intraperitoneal pretreatment with calcium antagonists. As trifluoperazine has a protective effect in renal ischemia, the calcium activated calmodulin dependent enzyme may play a role in renal ischemic injury.

Over the past 20 years, research on students' conceptual development of science concepts has begun to inform educators about the roles that prior knowledge and experiences play in the development of conceptual understandings. Whereas many initial studies focused on identifying and cataloging naive of misconceptions, more recent research has focused on how student concept development research can inform teaching practice and curriculum design. In this study, we investigated children's (ages 11∼12) spontaneously constructed or naive understanding of the particulate nature of matter prior to any formal instruction in the domain. Thirty students were interviewed concerning their understanding of the macroscopic and microscopic properties of the states of matter(solid, liquid, and gas), as well as their macro/microscopic understanding of phase changes and dissolving. Children expressed ideas about states of matter which were categorized as macrocontinuous, macroparticulate, or microparticulate. Furthermore, a substantial number of the children provided explanations of properties and processes which were consistent with those beliefs. These children's beliefs about matter were not fully and consistently developed across the spectrum of substances from continuous solids to particulate solids to liquids to gases. We speculate that children first develop local frameworks particular to different classes of substances and then slowly expand these frameworks to include a wide range of substances and their properties as well as such processes as melting and freezing.

In this study, Rheoencephalography(REG) was designed and constructed. Using the constructed instrument cerebral blood flow(CBF) of left and right brain, CBF change by posture, and reproducibility were studied. Followings are important results. Relative CBF could be measured noninvasively and continuously. Since reproducibility of the constructed REG was found to be quite high (4 %), the accuracy of the instrument itself was proved. REG can be easily applied for testing the effect of drugs for the patients with cerebral vessel diseases since it is quite sensitive to the relative changes of CBF. Various cerebral diseases can be diagnosed by analyzing the REG waveforms. The area of restricted cerebral blood vessels can be located by arranging the electrode configuration. Comparative studies with the standard techniques of measuring CBF are needed to verify the accuracy of REG. Further studies on optimal electrode configuration and various artifacts are also necessary.
