This study aimed to evaluate the effects and the mechanisms of ginger extract intake in the adiposity gain, metabolic and inflammatory disturbances induced by a high-refined carbohydrate (HC) diet in mice. Ginger extract at doses of 200, 600, and 1800 mg/kg was supplemented in the daily food of obese Balb/c mice during an 8-week experiment. Our findings indicate that consumption of high doses of ginger extracts prevents the increase of adiposity induced by HC diet, improves lipid profile, and promotes decrease of inflammatory markers in mice. We showed that ginger addition to HC diet leads to decrease in the recruitment of cells visualized in vivo in the microvasculature of adipose tissue, decrease of inflammatory cytokines, and increase of adiponectin serum levels. These results indicate that the consumption of ginger decreases the negative metabolic consequences induced by HC diet.

Objectives: To compare the clinical outcomes of isolated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with combined reconstruction of the ACL and anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee. Methods: A search was conducted on the PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, EMBASE, and Cochrane library databases, in line with the PRISMA protocol. The indexation terms used were “anterior cruciate ligament” OR “acl” AND “anterolateral ligament” AND “reconstruction.” Articles that compared patients submitted to combined ACL and ALL reconstruction with those submitted to isolated reconstruction of the ACL, with levels of evidence I, II, and III, were included. Studies with follow-up of less than 2 years and articles that did not use “anatomical” techniques for ALL reconstruction, such as extraarticular tenodesis, were excluded. A meta-analysis with R software was conducted, with a random effects model, presented as risk ratio (RR) or mean difference (MD), with a 95% confidence level (CI) and statistically significant at p < 0.05. Results: Ten articles were selected, with a total of 1495 patients, most of whom were men, of whom 674 submitted to ACL and ALL reconstruction and 821 to isolated ACL reconstruction. Combined ACL and ALL reconstruction exhibited a statistically significant advantage in residual pivot shift (RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.24-0.47, I2 = 0%, p < 0.01), rerupture rate (RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.19-0.62, I2 = 0%, p < 0.01), Lachman test (RR 0.59, 95% CI 0.40-0.86, I2 = 21%, p < 0.01), and postoperative Lysholm score (MD 2.28, CI 95% 0.75-3.81, I2 = 73%, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Combined ACL and ALL reconstruction obtained better postoperative clinical outcomes when compared with isolated ACL reconstruction, especially in reducing residual pivot shift and rerupture rate.

One of the factors that can promote gastric ulcer is the acute and/or chronic consumption of ethanol. One of the most used therapeutic measures is the use of proton pump inhibitor, like omeprazole. However, these drugs have several side effects, making it necessary to search for new alternatives. To investigate the gastroprotective effect of Baccharis trimera (carqueja) we used an ethanol-induced acute gastric ulcer model. For this, gastric ulcer was induced in rats using absolute ethanol for 2 consecutive days. After analysis of the stomach, an increase in oxidative stress was observed, as well as the reduction of the antioxidant defense. In addition, we observed in histology that there was an increase in inflammatory cells, necrosis, hemorrhage and hyperemia. Treatment with B. trimera was able to decrease oxidative damage as well as improve antioxidant defense. There was also a decrease in inflammation, collagen area and hemorrhage. All the beneficial effects promoted by carqueja were similar to those found by the positive controls used in our study (vitamin C and omeprazole). Analyzing our data, we can conclude that B. trimera presents a gastroprotective effect and should be further studied for its application in gastric ulcer therapy.

In this study, volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) was selected as a criterion for facilitatingthe scale up of xylitol production by Candida guilliermondii at the bench and pilot-scale level. A kLa valueof 16 h 1 was applied in reactors with volumetric capacity of 2.4 L, 18 L and 125 L. Fermentation wassuccessfully scaled-up from the bench to pilot-scale level with all experiments demonstrating aminimum of 60% xylose to xylitol conversion efficiency. Under all evaluated conditions glycerol andethanol were also produced as by-products of xylose metabolism. Only minor differences were observedin the fermentation profile when reactor volumes ranging from 2.4 L to 125 L were used forexperimentation purposes, reaching, at pilot scale, yield and volumetric productivity of 0.55 g g 1and 0.31 g L 1 h 1, respectively, with maximum specific growth rate of 0.26 h 1. This demonstrates andreinforces the feasibility of using kLa as scale up criterion. The use of this parameter allowed precisereproduction of results obtained at bench bioreactor level to a larger scale; this is extremely crucial andimportant information considering that the aim of the proposed biotechnological process is to reach thelevel required for the industrial viability.

Peptides from protein hydrolysate of a mixture of chicken combs and wattles (CCWs) were obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis, and their anticoagulant and inhibitory effects on angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) were investigated. The protein hydrolysate exhibited anticoagulant capacity by the intrinsic pathway (activated partial thromboplastin time) and potent ACE-inhibitory activity. The peptides were sequenced by LC-MS to identify those with higher inhibitory potential. From the pool of sequenced peptides, the following three peptides were selected and synthesized based on their low molecular weight and the presence of amino acids with ACE-inhibitory potential at the C-terminus: peptide I (APGLPGPR), peptide II (Piro-GPPGPT), and peptide III (FPGPPGP). Peptide III (FPGPPGP) showed the highest ACE-inhibitory capacity among the peptides selected. In conclusion, a peptide (FPGPPGP) of unknown sequence was identified as having potent ACE-inhibitory capacity. This peptide originated from unconventional hydrolysates from poultry slaughter waste, including combs and wattles.

Spirulina platensis is a cyanobacterium with high protein content and presenting neuroprotective effects. Now, we studied a protein-enriched fraction (SPF), on behavior, neurochemical and immunohistochemical (IHC) assays in hemiparkinsonian rats, distributed into the groups: SO (sham-operated), 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), and 6-OHDA (treated with SPF, 5 and 10 mg/kg, p.o., 15 days). Afterward, animals were subjected to behavioral tests and euthanized, and brain areas used for neurochemical and IHC assays. SPF partly reversed the changes in the apomorphine-induced rotations, open field and forced swim tests, and also the decrease in striatal dopamine and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid contents seen in hemiparkinsonian rats. Furthermore, SPF reduced brain oxidative stress and increased striatal expressions of tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine transporter and significantly reduced hippocampal inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2 and glial fibrillary acidic protein expressions. The data suggest that the protein fraction from S. platensis, through its brain anti-inflammatory and antioxidative actions, exerts neuroprotective effects that could benefit patients affected by neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson's disease.

Carbon nanotubes exhibit extraordinary eld emission properties because of their high electrical conductivity, ideal high aspectratio whisker-like shape for geometrical eld enhancement, and remarkable thermal stability. This paper will describe the PECVDgrowth of vertically aligned arrays of carbon nanotubes which are suitable for use as the electron emitters in a novel type ofmicrowave amplier capable of producing of order 10 W at 30 GHz.
