        A Case Study of English Teacher Development through Online Supervision

        Little has been known about the process of the language teacher professional development. The present study aims to investigate an assumption that anybody who has subject matter knowledge will be a good language teacher. A teacher with rich linguistic knowledge started to question the effectiveness of his online class. The teacher, in collaboration with a teacher trainer, became involved in the critical examination of his online class, seeking for more effective ways of teaching. The trainer provided the teacher with clinical supervision, which is characterized as developmental, collaborative, non-judgemental, interactive, and teacher-centered. The data collected at the multi-facets of the online teaching shows how the process of the teacher’s decision-making became principled on the basis of recent developments in English language teaching, and how the teacher has gained pedagogical knowledge through reflection upon his teaching. The feedback from the students reveals that such teacher professional development is beneficial to student learning. These findings suggest that language teacher’s professional development can take place when they are engaged in reflective teaching and classroom investigation. It is also suggested that the process of teacher development can be enhanced through collaborative supervision with trust, openness and congeniality between parties involved.

        Evaluation of In-service English Teacher Training Program for Language Testing Professionalism

        The present study was conducted to evaluate an intensive teacher training program for English language testing professionalism and draw implications for quality control. As part of the English educational reform process, a new national-level new English testing system has been developed to assess students' four skills. Prior to the introduction of the innovative English test system to schools, in-service teacher training program was designed to support teachers for their English testing professionalism. The training course aims to provide teachers with the principles, methods and content of the new test, and to help teachers appropriately prepare their students for the newly introduced test. The training program has the underlying principle of experiential learning. 141 secondary school teacher trainees took part in the questionnaire survey for the program evaluation. The analysis of the responses shows that professional knowledge on testing has improved after the training compared with before the training. It is also revealed that the trainees were satisfied with the effectiveness of experiential learning mode on enhancing their professionalism. The findings suggest that experiential learning is a viable approach to raising trainees' awareness of the new testing system and enhancing professional knowledge on testing. Some implications are drawn for English teacher professional development and trainer training.

      • A Robust Hidden Markov Gauss Mixture Vector Quantizer for a Noisy Source

        <P>Noise is ubiquitous in real life and changes image acquisition, communication, and processing characteristics in an uncontrolled manner. Gaussian noise and Salt and Pepper noise, in particular, are prevalent in noisy communication channels, camera and scanner sensors, and medical MRI images. It is not unusual for highly sophisticated image processing algorithms developed for clean images to malfunction when used on noisy images. For example, hidden Markov Gauss mixture models (HMGMM) have been shown to perform well in image segmentation applications, but they are quite sensitive to image noise. We propose a modified HMGMM procedure specifically designed to improve performance in the presence of noise. The key feature of the proposed procedure is the adjustment of covariance matrices in Gauss mixture vector quantizer codebooks to minimize an overall minimum discrimination information distortion (MDI). In adjusting covariance matrices, we expand or shrink their elements based on the noisy image. While most results reported in the literature assume a particular noise type, we propose a framework without assuming particular noise characteristics. Without denoising the corrupted source, we apply our method directly to the segmentation of noisy sources. We apply the proposed procedure to the segmentation of aerial images with Salt and Pepper noise and with independent Gaussian noise, and we compare our results with those of the median filter restoration method and the blind deconvolution-based method, respectively. We show that our procedure has better performance than image restoration-based techniques and closely matches to the performance of HMGMM for clean images in terms of both visual segmentation results and error rate.</P>

      • Host Immune Responses Against Hog Cholera Virus in Pigs Treated with an Ionoizsed Alkali Mineral Complex

        To determine the immune responses in pigs to hogcholera virus after treatment with an ionized alkalimineral complex (IAMC), 40 healthy pigs (28-32 daysold) from a commercial swine farm were purchasedand housed into 4 groups (n=10 each). All pigs werevaccinated intramuscularly (1 ml) with an attenuatedlive hog cholera virus (HCV, LOM strain) at 28-32days old and challenged with a virulent hog choleravirus at 8 weeks after vaccination. Each group wastreated with PowerFeelTMsprayed diet as 0.05% (w/w)in a final concentration (T-1,n=10),a diet mixed withSuperFeedTMas 3% (w/w) in a final concentration (T-2,n=10),or a diluted PowerFeelTMsolution (1:500,v/v) asdrinking water (T-3, n=10), respectively. A group(n=10) served as a non-treated control.Proportions ofexpressing CD2+ and CD8+ cells increased significantly(p<0.05) at 8-week post-application. Mean antibodytiters of each group against HCV gradually increasedto higher levels after vaccination and with challengeof the virulent virus.In conclusion,the IAMC-treateddiets can be helpful for the improvement of growth inpigs with proper vaccination program, while theIAMC-treated diets have no effects on the clinicalprotection against hog cholera.

        Squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck: what internists should know

        Squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (SCCHN) is a group of cancer arising from mucosal surfaces of the head and neck. Optimal management of SCCHN requires a multidisciplinary team of surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, nutritionist, and speech-language pathologists, due to the complexity of anatomical structure and importance of functional outcome. Human papilloma virus (HPV)-related SCCHN represents a distinct subset from HPV negative SCCHN which is associated with carcinogen exposure such as cigarette smoking, betel nut use and alcohol. HPV related SCCHN responds better to concurrent chemoradiation and has better overall prognosis, compared to HPV negative SCCHN. Radiation therapy has been introduced to the treatment of SCCHN, administered concurrently with systemic chemotherapy for locoregional SCCHN, as well as a palliative measure for recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) SCCHN. Recently, immune checkpoint inhibitors have been shown to improve overall survival in R/M-SCCHN and have been incorporated into the standard of care. Combination approaches with immune therapy and targeted therapy for biomarker enriched population based on genomics are being actively investigated and will shape the future of SCCHN treatment.

      • Historical Efforts and Issues in Technology Education in the United States: A Dual View

        일반교육과 직업교육의 이원적 배경을 가지고 있는 기술교육은 시대적 흐름에 따른 교육철학의 영향과 교육과정의 변화로 인해 밀접한 관계 속에서 발전되어왔다. 문헌연구에 기초한 이 연구는 일반교육으로서의 기술교육과 직업교육으로서의 기술교육의 역사적 변천과 쟁점을 서술하고, 일반교육으로서의 기술교육이 직업교육의 영향을 받게된 역사적 배경을 서술하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 일반교육으로서의 기술교육은 Woodward의 Manual Training을 시작으로 하여, Manual Arts, Industrial Arts, Industrial Technology Education, 그리고 Technology Education의 이름 변화를 거쳐 초, 중등학교에서 일반교육의 한 과목으로 자리잡고 있고, 교과 내용은 Communication, Construction, Transportation, Manufacturing을 주요 내용으로 하여, Medical Technology, Agricultural Technology, Bio-Technology를 포함하고 있는 추세이다. 반면, 직업교육으로서의 기술교육은 Runkle의 직업학교에서 Victor Della Vos의 Russian System을 소개하면서 시작되어 Trade and Job Analysis, School-to-Work Transition, 그리고 Technical Preparation의 프로그램을 통해 중등학교에서 졸업 후 직업 준비를 위한 과정으로 가르쳐지고 있다. 역사적으로 기술교육 교육자들은 행정적, 재정적 지원을 바탕으로 직업교육 교육과정 개발에 참여하게 되었고, 기술 교사교육에 이를 실행하게 되었다. 이로 인해 일반교육으로서의 기술교육과 직업교육은 학교교육에서 함께 발전하게 되었고, 서로의 정체성에 대한 문제가 제기되게되었다. 이 정체성의 문제는 미국 기술교육의 문제이자 미국 기술교육의 영향을 많이 받은 우리 나라 기술교육의 문제이기도 하다. 이러한 기술교육 정체성의 문제는 우리 기술교육관련 연구자들만이 해결할 수 있는 문제이다. 미국 기술교육의 역사 개관을 통하여 우리 기술교육의 정체성과 앞으로의 발전 방향을 다시 한번 생각할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 한다.
