Effects of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus in mice submitted to protein restriction
Kyu-Yeob Kim,박찬원,김형민,강인철,정현자 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2011 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.11 No.1
The present study was to investigate the effects of water extracts of Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus stem extract (ADE) on an exacerbated immune function through utilization of a protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) diet. ADE has been used in Korea as a tonic and sedative agents as well as a drug with ginseng like activities. However, there is no pronouncing about the immune system on the PEM feeding mice. The immobility time were significantly decreased in the ADE-administrated group as compared to the control group on the forced swimming test (P<0.05). The level of aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase in blood was significantly reduced in the ADE-administrated group (P<0.05). ADE also significantly decreased production of interferon-γ and interleukin (IL)-4 but not IL-2 in splenocytes (P<0.05). We used a manually antibody microarray to carry out the signaling protein microarray analysis. Unfortunately,we did not find change of protein expression. These results suggest that ADE have the anti-fatigue effect and the immune regulation effect.

<P>In acupuncture, adaptation to energy flows in body cycles is the key to health and therapy. From the evolution of our thinking about acupuncture, we developed the Life-Energy (Qi) oriental needle (Qi needle). It contains a rotating electromagnetic wave and has a strong affinity for the meridians. We report for the first time on the effect of acupuncture by using a Qi needle (Qi acupuncture) on rat experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a model of human demyelinating multiple sclerosis. Both Qi acupuncture (QA) and general acupuncture (GA) were used on the limbs, at the shaoshang (LU11) and zhongchong (PC9) acupoints, of rats from one day post-immunization (dpi) to 12 dpi. The therapy in the QA groups significantly blocked the onset of EAE paralysis (3/13, 77%, p < 0.05) while all rats in the control EAE groups (12/15) and GA groups (11/13) showed EAE paralysis. In addition, the duration of paralysis was shortened in QA groups (1.5 0.5 days) compared with those of the vehicle (5.5 0.2 days) and GA groups (3.6 1.1 days). The numbers of inflammatory cells and CD4(+) T cells in the QA treated EAE group were significantly reduced compared with those of the EAE control and EAE with GA (p < 0.05). Collectively, the present findings suggest that QA ameliorates the paralysis in rats in an EAE model. The precise mechanism of the amelioration and human studies, however, needs further study.</P>

Cryopreservation of bovine embryos is used to efficiently implant surrogate mothers. It has been widely accepted that high lipid content in the oocyte interrupts its survival during freeze-thaw cycles. Serum component in the culture medium is thought to increase the embryo`s lipid contents. Conversely, L-carnitine stimulates lipid metabolism by transporting long chain fatty acids into the mitochondria. Objective of this study was to analyze the effect of L-carnitine supplementation in IVM medium and defined IVC medium on the development, lipid contents and the cryosurvival of bovine IVF embryos. 0.0, 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 mM L-carnitine was supplemented in IVM medium, respectively (IVM-LC 0.0, LC 1.5, LC 3.0 and LC 6.0). Development rate from the 2cell to the morula stages was higher in IVM-LC 3.0 groups than those of IVM-LC 6.0 (p<0.05). But there were no significant differences among the other groups in the blastocyst rates and lipid content results. When 0.0, 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 mM L-carnitine were supplemented in IVC medium (IVC-LC 0.0, LC 1.5, LC 3.0 and LC 6.0), development competence was not significantly different between those embryos. Lipid contents of embryos treated L-carnitine (IVC-LC 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0) were significantly lower than embryos of non-treated group. L-carnitine was supplemented 0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 mM during IVM and 3.0 mM during IVC (LC 0.0 - 3.0, LC 1.5 – 3.0, LC 3.0 – 3.0, LC 6.0 – 3.0) and cryosurvival of blastocysts confirmed after freezing-thawing. There were no significant differences on development, but LC 3.0 – 3.0 was significantly lower lipid contents than other groups. And LC 3.0 – 3.0 had better survival rates and hatched rates of blastocysts than LC 0.0 – 0.0. In conclusion, supplementation of L-carnitine in defined IVC medium decreases lipid contents. And L-carnitine supplementation improves cryosurvival and developmental ability of bovine IVF embryos.

The aim of this work is to experimentally investigate the performance of cathodic dead-end mode fuel cell according to anisotropic characteristics of gas diffusion layer (e.g fiber direction). Until now, analysis of anisotropic character of GDL has been studied about through plane (z-direction) and in plane (x-y direction), but in this work, it adds directional character in x and y direction. Fiber direction of x and y in gas diffusion layer influences flows in porous media and consumption of fuels such as oxygen and hydrogen. Also anisotropic feature affects on purge characteristics and overall cell performance. Because fiber direction affects movement of flows in gas diffusion layer, so flow under channel and rib shows different aspect. According to fiber direction of gas diffusion layer, therefore, water distribution, fuel consumption and purge interval is changed. This paper demonstrates advantages of anisotropic gas diffusion layer to cathodic dead-end mode for PEM fuel cell.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the thermal performance of a heat pipe having two dissimilar condenser sections which were subject to different boundary conditions. The first condenser dissipates heat to the surrounding air through annular fins by natural convection, while the second one is cooled by a liquid by forced convection at different temperatures. The container and the wick were made of stainless steel and the working fluid was Dowtherm-A for medium-temperature applications. The diameter and length of the heat pipe were 25.4 ㎜ and 1 m, respectively. The maximum thermal load was 1 ㎾ and the operating temperature was around 250 . The liquid fill charge was adjusted so that the first condenser section may work as an evaporator when the original evaporator was inactive in a vertical configuration. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of thermal resistance and effective thermal conductance against input heat flux and operating temperature.
