Multiple systemic atrophy (MSA) is a progressive sporadic neurodegenerative disease of undetermined etiology that causes parkinsonism and cerebellar, autonomic, and pyramidal dysfunction in varying combinations. Clinically, the syndrome is difficult to distinguish from other neurodegenerative disorders such as idiopathic Parkinson's disease or other types of cerebellar ataxia. Pontine signal abnormalities on MRI (the cross sign) have been shown to be a typical feature of MSA as compared to controls and idiopathic Parkinson's disease, while their specificity had not yet been clearly established with regard to cerebellar degenerations. A 73-year-old man presented with a gait disturbance, dysarthria and dizziness during 2 years. He complained additional urinary incontinence. His past medical and family history were nonspecific. On neurologic examination, there were cerebellar ataxia, bradykinesia and rigidity. There were no other focal neurologic signs. Routine laboratory parameters were not remarkable. Axial T2-weighted and sagittal T1-weighted MRI showed pontine hyperintesity and cerebellar atrophy. We diagnosed possible OPCA by the criteria of Quinn. We present the pontine cross singn in a case with the clinically diagnosed as possible OPCA.

The study was conducted to establish the method of performance test of honeybee queens under Korean environment. Colony performances of apis mellifera were tested based on wintering ability, colony population and honey yield in Sangju, Korea from November, 1999 ∼2000 season were averaged 22.6±2.6kg and 20.1±2.6kg, respectively, showing the decrease of 2.5 ±0.7kg. During 2000∼2001 winter season, the colony weight before wintering was 22.6±2.3kg and was decreased by 2.3± 0.6kg. The number of combs well covered with bees was 13.1± 4.6 as measured on the 22nd of May. 2000 and 16.0± 3.8 on the 21st of May. 2001, respectively. The rate of supering colonies were 50% and 98.5% in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The amount of honey production was 12.7± 8.6kg per colony in 2000, 14.2± 7.6kg per colony with unselected queens and 23.5± 4.9kg per colony with seleceted-tested queens in 2001, which were harvested two times during main nectar flow season of black locust, Robinia peseudoacasia.

This study is carried out to investigate the water quality changes in Busan Metropolitan streams. The results are as follows. In Busan Metropolitan streams, the loading rates of contaminants are greater in industrial waste water streams than domestic waste water streams. Some sampling points show a little high loading in autumn, but this needs more investigation to make clear the causes. The level of organic contaminants(BOD_(5) and COD_(MN)) is found to be low and does not show seasonal variation in domestic waste water streams. But, the level of organic contaminants in industrial waste water streams is relatively high and seems to be seasonally variable, which is affected by other factors. The nutrient materials, such as nitrogen(as T-N, about 20mg/L) and phosphorus(as T-P, about 2.0mg/L), are abundant than Nak Dong River and the general trends of contaminants level are similar to those of organic contaminants.

The basic ideas of the new community movement were based on the autonomous and voluntary participation of local residents. Since the beginning of the Saemaul Undong in the early 1970, Korean government has been played a major role in igniting and pushing ahead with the new community movement. From intellectual, economic, social, cultural points of view, the new community movement with strong administrative guidlines has attained a lot of achievements during the past 10 years. What is more important, the voluntary participation of local people rather than the administrative directions are urgently needed to activate the rich and affluent villages in the new community movement of the '80. The directions of the desirable administrative guildines in the eighties are as follows; o To convert the directive points into the assistant one in planning functions of local development. o To formulate the group cooperation system in the decision making of local people. o To develop the inventive and suggestive systems of local residents on the new community movement. o To improve the understanding of the mass to make both the national and local development planning together. o To make a suggestion and publish the blue-print of long time development planning.

市販 菓子類의 固有 및 唾液內 pH, 緩衝能 ,酸醱酵能

Fifty-one kinds of confections in the market were selected for study. The pH of samples was measured by Bechman φ40 pH meter using the 10ml mixture of 1 gm sample, 2ml saliva, and distilled water. The buffering capacity was measured by titrating the 10ml mixture of 1 gm sample and distilled water by 0.1 N lactic acid to the point of pH 3.00. The buffering capacity in saliva was measured by titrating the 10ml mixture of 1 gm sample, 2ml saliva, and distilled water by same method. The pH drop during fermentation was measured at first and fourth hour during fermentation using the 10ml mixture of 1 gm sample, 2ml saliva and distilled water incubated at 37℃. The acid-producing capacity was measured by titrating the 10ml mixture incubated for four hours by 0.IN NaOH to the point of original pH. 1. The pH was 6.98±0.87, and the pH in saliva was 7.09±0.61. 2. The buffering capacity was 287±710 μl, and the buffering in saliva was 195 ± 76μl. 3. The pH after one hour of incubation was 7.08±0.39, the pH after four hours of incubation was 4.88±0.52, and the acid-producing capacity was 191±77μl. 4. The pH, pH in saliva, buffering capacity, buffering capacity in saliva, pH dropfter one hour of incubation, and pH drop after four hours of incubation were showed statistically significant relationship each other in Spearman's rank correlation (p < 0.05), but the acid-producing capacity did not show any statistically significant relationship with others except the pH drop after four hours of incubation. 5. The oral health professionals, consumers, and manufacturers should cooperate in developing the confections with higher pH, greater buffering capacity and lesser acidproducing capacity.

A "pseudolabyrinthine" syndrome caused by acute infarction in the territory of the medial branch of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (mPICA) has rarely been reported. The infarct also involved the lateral and dorsal medulla when the mPICA supplied all or part of these regions. A 53-year-old man of mPICA infarction developed with vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and imbalance. On examination, they fell to the lesion side on attempts to stand with eyes open. He had not nystagmus, limb ataxia, opthalmoparesis, visual tilting of the environment, and other abnormal neurologic signs. MRI showed a recent infarct involving medial part of inferior cerebellum. Vertgio, nausea, and vomiting resolved within 1-2 days. But, imbalance improved within 1-2 weeks. We report a case of mPICA infarction mimicking clinical sings of APV. So, we suggest that absent nystagmus and longstanding imbalance were point of differential diagnosis from APV.
