Purpose: Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2)/neu amplification affects the cell proliferation through the modulation of multiple G1 cell cycle regulators in breast tumor cells. We performed this study to investigate whether retinoblastoma protein (pRB) and p27Kip1 were differently expressed according to the HER2 amplification status in human breast cancer. Methods: HER2 amplification was assayed by fluorescence in situ hybridization and the expression of cell cycle regulators were assayed by immunohistochemistry on 153 consecutive invasive breast cancers. The proliferative activity of breast cancer was analyzed according to the HER2 amplification and cell cycle protein expression status. Results: HER2 amplification was observed in 39 (25.5%) of 153 breast cancers. In the HER2 amplified breast cancers, the pRB expression was significantly increased (p=0.011) whereas there was no significant relationship between HER2 amplification and p27Kip1 expression. There was an inverse correlation between pRB expression and Ki-67 labeling index in the HER2 amplified breast cancers (p=0.036). In contrast, Ki67 labeling index was significantly decreased as p27Kip1 expression increased in HER2 non-amplified breast cancers (p=0.028). In HER2 non-amplified breast cancers, we could not observe any association between the pRB expression and Ki67 labeling index. Conclusion: The proliferation of the breast cancers was associated with pRB expression in HER2 amplified tumors whereas it was associated with p27Kip1 expression in HER2 non-amplified tumors. The results of the current study indicate that the cell proliferative activity of the breast cancer is under different growth signal pathways according to HER2 amplification status.
Formation and Related-Behavior of Micro-bowl Morphology Consisting of Ionic Palladium(II) Complexes

Reaction of [(bpy)Pd](PF6)2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) with racemic bis(isonicotinoyl)-1,1'-bi-2-naphtholate (L) in acetone,and followed by addition of chloroform and solvent evaporation allows to form amorphous micro-bowl morphology consisting of [(bpy)PdL]2(PF6)4 without any template or additive. In contrast, the reaction and recrystallization in acetone for 1 week produce parallel-piped single crystals consisting of [(bpy)3Pd3(μ3-HPO4)2](PF6)2. The formations of micro-bowl and parallel-piped single crystal morphologies appear to be primarily associated with the kinetic and thermodynamic control, respectively. The formation of micro-bowls may be attributed to eruption of organic solvents. Cosolvent effects and chemical properties on the formation of micro-bowl morphology have been observed.
Influence of Sodium Hyaluronate Concentration on Corneal Aberrations in Soft Contact Lens Wearers

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of varying concentrations of sodium hyaluronate (SH) eye drops on corneal aberrations in normal individuals wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses. Methods: Normal individuals wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses were enrolled in this study. Subjects were classified into two groups depending on the concentration of the preservative-free SH used (group 1, 0.1% SH; group 2, 0.3% SH). All subjects were asked to blink five times after instillation of the SH eye drop and before the Galilei measurements. Corneal aberrations were measured over the contact lenses before and after SH eye drop instillation. Visual acuity (VA) over the contact lenses was also measured both before instillation of the SH eye drop and after the subjects completed the five blinks. Results: There was no change in VA after SH instillation in group 1; however, group 2’s VA significantly deteriorated after SH instillation. Changes in VA after SH instillation compared to baseline were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1. Similarly, the increase in corneal aberrations after SH instillation was significant in group 2 but not significant in group 1. Among the significantly increased corneal aberration parameters, defocus was the main type in group 2. Changes in corneal aberrations after SH instillation compared to baseline were significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1. Conclusions: A 0.3%-concentration of SH increases corneal aberration and decreases VA in soft contact lens wearers. Defocus is the main type of aberration that increased in the 0.3% SH instillation group.

This study was undertaken in order to examine the characteristics and potential uses of pearl barley. This study can be summarized as follows. 1. Pearl barley grows well as compared to other cereals, even on the river side and on the reclaimed land. 2. The contents of protein, fat, and minerals in pearl barley are higher than those of other cereals such as barley and rice. But it is not said to be an excellent protein or fat source foods because the quality is lower than other cereals. 3. The past usage of pearl barley in herb medicine. Suggested that it might contain a lot of remedical compounds. Thus, the investigation in this aspect should be pursued. 4. There may be various ways of uses when pearl barley is mixed with other food items.

We provided standard practice for direct contact cell culture evaluation of materials for medical devices in this report. This practice introduced a reference method of direct contact cell culture testing. This method of direct contact cell culture may be used in the construction of medical materials and devices for test the cytotoxic potential of materials. Researcher for medical devices could use this practice to compare other cytotoxicity tests or directly to evaluate materials. Cell or materials could be sometimes modified depending on use in offered extend of this practice.
