Social Work Advocacy in Singapore: Some Reflections on the Constraints and Opportunities
Kerry Brydon 한국사회복지학회 2010 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.4 No.3
One central concern of social work is advocacy for social justice. This is a lofty ideal but a difficultideal to achieve in view of social work being delivered in sociopolitical contexts with varyingdegrees of tolerance of advocacy. This discussion is based on a case study from Singapore andconsiders some of the particular constraints and opportunities in that context, while also makingthe point that those similar constraints and opportunities exist in all contexts. A model thatcombines principles of advocacy and collaboration is proposed as a means of embracing socialwork advocacy in Singapore and other contexts.
Air-coupled ultrasonic tomography of solids: 1 Fundamental development
Kerry S. Hall,John S. Popovics 국제구조공학회 2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.1
Ultrasonic tomography is a powerful tool for identifying defects within an object or structure. But practical application of ultrasonic tomography to solids is often limited by time consuming transducer coupling. Air-coupled ultrasonic measurements may eliminate the coupling problem and allow for more rapid data collection and tomographic image construction. This research aims to integrate recent developments in air-coupled ultrasonic measurements with current tomography reconstruction routines to improve testing capability. The goal is to identify low velocity inclusions (air-filled voids and notches) within solids using constructed velocity images. Finite element analysis is used to simulate the experiment in order to determine efficient data collection schemes. Comparable air-coupled ultrasonic signals are then collected through homogeneous and isotropic solid (PVC polymer) samples. Volumetric (void) and planar (notch) inclusions within the samples are identified in the constructed velocity tomograms for a variety of transducer configurations. Although there is some distortion of the inclusions, the experimentally obtained tomograms accurately indicate their size and location. Reconstruction error values, defined as misidentification of the inclusion size and position, were in the range of 1.5-1.7%. Part 2 of this paper set will describe the application of this imaging technique to concrete that contains inclusions.
Benefaction of probiotics for human health: A review
Kerry, Rout George,Patra, Jayanta Kumar,Gouda, Sushanto,Park, Yooheon,Shin, Han-Seung,Das, Gitishree 行政院衛生署藥物食品檢驗局 2018 JOURNAL OF FOOD AND DRUG ANALYSIS Vol.26 No.3

Humans are a unique reservoir of heterogeneous and vivacious group of microbes, which together forms the human-microbiome superorganism. Human gut serves as a home to over 100-1000 microbial species, which primarily modulate the host internal environment and thereby, play a major role in host health. This spectacular symbiotic relationship has attracted extensive research in this field. More specifically, these organisms play key roles in defense function, eupepsia along with catabolism and anabolism, and impact brain-gut responses. The emergence of microbiota with resistance and tolerance to existing conventional drugs and antibiotics has decreased the drug efficacies. Furthermore, the modern biotechnology mediated nano-encapsulated multiplex supplements appear to be high cost and inconvenient. Henceforth, a simple, low-cost, receptive and intrinsic approach to achieve health benefits is vital in the present era. Supplementation with probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics has shown promising results against various enteric pathogens due to their unique ability to compete with pathogenic microbiota for adhesion sites, to alienate pathogens or to stimulate, modulate and regulate the host's immune response by initiating the activation of specific genes in and outside the host intestinal tract. Probiotics have also been shown to regulate fat storage and stimulate intestinal angiogenesis. Hence, this study aims to underline the possible beneficial impact of probiotics for human health and medical sectors and for better lifestyle.

Social Policy in Singapore: Insights from a Social Work Perspective
Kerry Brydon 한국사회복지학회 2011 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.5 No.1
Social work practice, irrespective of the location of practice, is shaped by local conditions, particularlythe laws and policies applicable to the practice. Most governments adopt some form of institutionalarrangements pertinent to local conditions to meet local needs, such arrangements inWestern contexts commonly being described as the welfare state. In other contexts, notably theEast Asian context, the Western welfare state has been deemed inappropriate for meeting localneeds. In this discussion there will be a focus on arrangements developed in Singapore, a country inthe East Asian region. Although Singapore has eschewed any notion of a welfare state, this discussionwill demonstrate that it does have in place a range of policy responses to meet Singaporeanneeds and that these measures are consistent with the frameworks adopted by emerging Confucianwelfare states.
Xi Jinping’s Leadership Style: Master or Servant?
KERRY BROWN 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2016 Asian International Studies Review Vol.17 No.2
Much commentary has been made about the amount of power that Xi Jinping has accrued since the leadership transition over 2012 and into 2013. He is interpreted by many as being the most powerful of modern Chinese leaders. But his leadership needs to be interpreted carefully within the organisation that he leads and whose interests he and his colleagues serve–the Communist Party of China. Looking at his relationship with this body reveals a more complex framework within which to see his real authority, one which implies that he is as much a servant of its corporate interests as he is an autonomous, self-serving agent.
The Rise of China’s Zhao Lijian Diplomacy: A Time Series Analysi
Kerry Liu 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2022 Asian International Studies Review Vol.23 No.2
China’s wolf warrior diplomacy has attracted extensive attention since 2020. One of the most prominent “wolf warriors” is Zhao Lijian, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson. Based on weekly Google Trends datasets between August 21, 2016 and August 8, 2021, this study provides a quantitative description of the development of Zhao Lijian diplomacy. Employing Granger causality tests and autoregressive distributed lag models, this study finds that Zhao Lijian diplomacy is part of China’s wolf warrior diplomacy. Most importantly, COVID-19 may be the only factor that has driven the rise of Zhao Lijian diplomacy. This study contributes to academia by presenting a new quantitative approach to international relations studies to contribute to our understanding of China’s foreign policy.
