A Novel Memory Hierarchy for Flash Memory Based Storage Systems
Yim, Keno-Soo The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2005 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.5 No.4
Semiconductor scientists and engineers ideally desire the faster but the cheaper non-volatile memory devices. In practice, no single device satisfies this desire because a faster device is expensive and a cheaper is slow. Therefore, in this paper, we use heterogeneous non-volatile memories and construct an efficient hierarchy for them. First, a small RAM device (e.g., MRAM, FRAM, and PRAM) is used as a write buffer of flash memory devices. Since the buffer is faster and does not have an erase operation, write can be done quickly in the buffer, making the write latency short. Also, if a write is requested to a data stored in the buffer, the write is directly processed in the buffer, reducing one write operation to flash storages. Second, we use many types of flash memories (e.g., SLC and MLC flash memories) in order to reduce the overall storage cost. Specifically, write requests are classified into two types, hot and cold, where hot data is vulnerable to be modified in the near future. Only hot data is stored in the faster SLC flash, while the cold is kept in slower MLC flash or NOR flash. The evaluation results show that the proposed hierarchy is effective at improving the access time of flash memory storages in a cost-effective manner thanks to the locality in memory accesses.
Unbalanced Magnetic Forces in Rotational Unsymmetrical Transverse Flux Machine
Salwa Baserrah,Keno Rixen,Bernd Orlik 대한전기학회 2012 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.7 No.2
The torque and unbalanced magnetic forces in permanent magnet machines are resultants of the tangential, axial and normal magnetic forces, respectively. Those are in general influenced by pole-teeth-winding configuration. A study of the torque and unbalanced magnetic forces of a small flux concentrating permanent magnet transverse flux machine (FCPM-TFM) in segmented compact structure is presented in this paper. By using FLUX3D software from Cedrat, Maxwell stress tensor has been solved. Finite element (FE-) magneto static study followed by transient analysis has been conducted to investigate the influence of unsymmetrical winding pattern, in respect to the rotor, on the performance of the FCPM-TFM. Calculating the magnetic field components in the air gap has required an introduction of a 2D grid in the middle of the air gap, whereby good estimations of the forces are obtained. In this machine, the axial magnetic forces reveal relatively higher amplitudes compared to the normal forces. Practical results of a prototype motor are demonstrated through the analysis.

Flux concentrated permanent magnet transverse flux machines, FCPM-TFMs, with segmented stators require multi-turn concentric saddle coils to replace the ring coils, which are normally utilized in conventional layeredphase TFM constructions. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the shape of saddle phase windings and their parameter variations on the output torque productivity. Non-meshed coils evaluated via a finite element method (FEM) to examine the effect of the coil’s location within one phase on machine performance. By using meshed coils, the analysis can be extended to inspect the distributions of magnetic field strength as well as current density in the coils. Throughout the study, the influence of design parameters on the output torque for two stator structures, i.e., a laminated and soft magnetic composite (SMC), are evaluated.

Metallic Glass Formation at the Interface of Explosively Welded Nb and Stainless Steel

The interface between explosively welded niobium and stainless steel SUS 304 was studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy. The wavy interface along which vortex zones were located was observed. The vortex zones formed due to the mixing of materials typically had amorphous structure. Inoue’s criteria of glass formation were used to explain this result. The effect of the composition, cooling rate and pressure on the glass formation are discussed. The conditions of deformation, heating, and cooling as well as shockwaves propagation were numerically simulated. We show that the conditions of vortex zone formation resemble the conditions of rapid solidification processes. In contrast to the "classical" methods of rapid solidification of melt, the conditions of metastable phase formation during explosive welding are significantly complicated by the fluctuations of composition and pressure. Possible metastable structures formation at the interface of some common explosively joined materials is predicted.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) patients are at risk of suffering from both pulmonary metastases or a second squamous cell carcinoma of the lung (LUSC). Differentiating pulmonary metastases from primary lung cancers is of high clinical importance, but not possible in most cases with current diagnostics. To address this, we performed DNA methylation profiling of primary tumors and trained three different machine learning methods to distinguish metastatic HNSC from primary LUSC. We developed an artificial neural network that correctly classified 96.4% of the cases in a validation cohort of 279 patients with HNSC and LUSC as well as normal lung controls, outperforming support vector machines (95.7%) and random forests (87.8%). Prediction accuracies of more than 99% were achieved for 92.1% (neural network), 90% (support vector machine), and 43% (random forest) of these cases by applying thresholds to the resulting probability scores and excluding samples with low confidence. As independent clinical validation of the approach, we analyzed a series of 51 patients with a history of HNSC and a second lung tumor, demonstrating the correct classifications based on clinicopathological properties. In summary, our approach may facilitate the reliable diagnostic differentiation of pulmonary metastases of HNSC from primary LUSC to guide therapeutic decisions.
