      • The Durham Oriental Music Festivalandits Legacy

Keith Pratt,Simon Mills,Keith Howard 아시아음악학회 2017 Asian Musicology Vol.27 No.-

Between 1976 and 1982 the city and University of Durham, UK, hosted a series of three unprecedented festivals. Their aim was to introduce Western audiences to the traditional music of Asia by means of concerts, lectures, workshops, films and exhibitions. Countries represented by topclass artists and scholars were China, Korea, Japan, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Laos. Overcoming many difficulties, the Durham Oriental Music Festival acquired a worldwide reputation and successfully helped to promote Asian music and ethnomusicology in the West. In 2009 Durham University revived its aims by introducing a Festival of East Asian Music. More modest in scale, this annually promotes performance and study of musical themes from countries of East Asia, again putting emphasis on authenticity and high quality.

        Cracked or Broken: Pentecostal Unity

( Keith Warrington ) 한세대학교 영산신학연구소 2013 영산신학저널 Vol.28 No.-

Just over 100 years ago, Pentecostalism was born. Since then, it has grown to be one of the biggest and fastest growing components of Christianity. It’s big―but it’s not what it was. Now, it’s multidenominational, multi-cultural, multinational … and rather fragmented. There are doctrinal and practical reasons for this, some of which are understandable and logical. However, an apparent tendency to disunity has resulted in uncertainty and even hostility towards other Christian denominations, especially the World Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church. This has led to some unfortunate and Spiritgrieving consequences, including theological and ethical aberrations. A positive way forward must be explored for the sake of the Church (including Pentecostal believers and others) and in order to reflect the vision of Jesus and the mission of the Spirit. Some pointers to help achieve this end include a readiness to remember that Pentecostalism is about mission and encounter; also Pentecostals need to learn lessons from their history, especially from those who made the quest for authentic unity an important element on their agenda. They also need to listen to the Bible as well as learning to appreciate and benefit from the lives of other believers whose spiritual frameworks may be different, but no less authentic, than their own. Most importantly, they need to listen to the Spirit.

        Pentecostals and the Bible

( Keith Warrington ) 한세대학교 영산신학연구소 2015 영산신학저널 Vol.34 No.-

Pentecostals have long cherished the Bible and viewed it as the supreme message of God to believers. As such, it has been identified as the source for Christian living and truth and as the major resource for preaching and teaching. Against a backdrop of the fact that the Bible is read considerably less by Pentecostals now than it was just a few decades ago, it is appropriate to revisit some of the reasons why Pentecostals have regarded the Bible so highly. Pentecostals share with other Evangelical believers foundational beliefs concerning the inspired nature of the Bible and its trustworthiness for Christian behaviour. However, Pentecostals affirm other truths as well concerning the application of Biblical truth to their lives. These emphases provide extra contributions to the wider Christian Church to facilitate a greater appreciation of the value of the Bible and its application to the lives of believers today and to those who are privileged to teach and preach from it. As a further result of Pentecostals exploring such foundational truths, it is to be hoped that the trend in Bible reading will be halted and reversed. Otherwise, there is a grievous danger that God will be more silent than he ought to be because of an increasing absence of the Bible being read in churches and by individual believers.

Heterotopic Ossification Causing Radiculopathy after Lumbar Total Disc Arthroplasty

        Keith L. Jackson,Justin M. Hire,Jeremy M. Jacobs,Charles C. Key,John G. Devine 대한척추외과학회 2015 Asian Spine Journal Vol.9 No.3

To date, no reports have presented radiculopathy secondary to heterotopic ossification following lumbar total disc arthroplasty. The authors present a previously unpublished complication of lumbar total disk arthroplasty (TDA) secondary to heterotopic ossification (HO) in the spinal canal, and they propose a modification to the McAfee classification of HO. The patient had undergone an L5/S1 lumbar TDA two years prior due to discogenic back pain. His preoperative back pain was significantly relieved, but he developed new, atraumatic onset radiculopathy. Radiographs and a computed tomography myelogram revealed an implant malposition posteriorly with heterotopic bone formation in the canal, causing an impingement of the traversing nerve root. Revision surgery was performed with implant extraction, L5/S1 anterior lumbar interbody fusion, supplemental posterior decompression, and pedicle screw fixation. The patient tolerated the procedure well, with complete resolution of the radicular leg pain. At a two-year follow up, the patient had a solid fusion without subsidence or recurrence of heterotopic bone. This case represents a novel pattern of heterotopic ossification, and it describes a previously unreported cause for implant failure in lumbar disc replacement surgery–reinforcing the importance of proper intraoperative component positioning. We propose a modification to the existing McAfee classification of HO after TDA with the addition of Class V and VI HO.

Concentric X-Braced Frames with HSS Bracing

        Keith D. Palmer,Charles W. Roeder,Dawn E. Lehman,Taichiro Okazaki,Carol K. Shield,Jacob Powell 한국강구조학회 2012 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.12 No.3

Concentrically braced frames are stiff, strong systems frequently used to resist wind and seismic loading; in regions of high seismicity in the US special concentrically braced frames (SCBFs) are used. CBF configurations vary, but in low rise or other structures with modest levels of demands single-story, X-configured braced frames (X-braced) are commonly used. The brace sections used also vary but hollow structural sections (HSS) are the most common in the U.S. Although important, in part because low-rise structures sustain large demands, few research programs have focused on the single-story X-brace configuration. A large research program was undertaken to understand and improve the response of SCBFs with selected testing on single-story X braced SCBFs. The test matrix consisted of two, full-scale planar X-braced frame experiments and one nearlyfull-scale three-dimensional X-braced frame. The tests were designed using a new design and detailing philosophy, called the Balanced Design Method. In this paper, application of this design method to the frame is investigated, with a focus on the center-splice connection. The results show that the ultimate inelastic deformation capacity of the system is less dependent on the specific design detail at this splice. Additionally, the bi-directional load testing indicated that the out-of-plane demands did not impact the system performance.

Diabetes Care of Non-obese Korean Americans: Considerable Room for Improvement

        Keith Tsz-Kit Chan,Karen M. Kobayashi,Adity Roy,Esme Fuller-Thomson 대한가정의학회 2019 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.40 No.2

Background: Family doctors are increasingly managing the diabetes care of Korean-Americans. Little is known about the prevalence of diabetes among non-obese Korean-Americans, or the extent to which they receive timely and appropriate diabetes care. The purpose of this investigation is to: (1) identify the prevalence of diabetes and to determine the adjusted odds of diabetes among non-obese Korean-Americans compared to non-Hispanic White (NHW) Americans, (2) examine the factors associated with having diabetes in a large sample of non-obese Korean- Americans, and (3) determine the prevalence and adjusted odds of optimal frequency of eye care, foot care and A1C blood glucose level monitoring among non-obese Korean-Americans with diabetes in comparison to NHWs with diabetes. Methods: Secondary analysis of population-based data from the combined 2007, 2009, and 2011 adult California Health Interview Survey. The sample included 74,361 respondents with body mass index (BMI) <30 kg/m2 (referred to as ‘non-obese BMI’), of whom 2,289 were Korean-Americans and 72,072 were NHWs, and 4,576 had diabetes. Results: The prevalence and adjusted odds of diabetes among non-obese Korean-Americans are significantly higher than among their NHW peers. More than 90% of Korean-Americans with diabetes were non-obese. NHWs had substantially higher odds of having optimal frequency of eye care, foot care and A1C glucose level monitoring, even after adjusting for insulin dependence, sex, age, education, income, and BMI. Conclusion: Non-obese Korean-Americans are at higher risk for diabetes and are much less likely to receive optimal diabetes care in comparison to NHWs. Targeted outreach is necessary.
