        Thermal Conductivity of Soil-based Aerated Lightweight Concrete

        Investigation on the thermal conductivity of newspaper sandwiched Soil-based Aerated Lightweight Concrete (SALC) panels is the main purpose of this study. Control and newspaper sandwiched SALC panels of different densities (1100, 1500 and 1700 kg/m3)were produced and tested. The areal intensity of newspaper sandwiched was varied from 0.05, 0.10 to 0.15 g/cm2. The current investigation was limited to the effects of areal intensity of newspaper sandwiched and density of SALC on thermal conductivity. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of newspaper sandwiched SALC panels reduced remarkably compared to nonnewspaper sandwiched SALC panels. The percent reductions were 19.7%, 10.5% and 33.5% correspond to densities 1700, 1500 and 1100 kg/m3 with a mere areal intensity of 0.05 g/cm2 newspaper sandwiched.

        Selective non digestion of yellow mealworm Tenebrio molitor larvae by arowana

        This study reveals the unusual case reported for the first time on the selective non digestion of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae by arowana fish. In January 2005, an Asian arowana (Scleropages formosus) (red variety), from Daesang Tropical Fish Corporation, Seoul, Korea, mortality was observed due to unknown cause. No putative causal factors were suggested by bacteriological and parasitological examinations. Internal examination of the dissected stomach showed some undigested debris with mandible parts of mealworms attached to the mucosal lining of stomach wall. Feeding experiment of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) was conducted on the silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum). Result showed that on the test group, fish released vomitous material containing undigested mandibles of mealworm was observed on the 24th day of the feeding experiment. Histopathological examination of the cross section of the stomach wall layers of the test groups, showed detached parts of the mucosal layer and gastric pits around the damaged area with intact mucularis tissues. While the control group fed with mealworm larvae without head part showed intact stomach wall layers consisting of gastric pit, mucosa and mucularis tissues. Fish on both treatments survived until the termination of experiment. The removal of mealworm larvae head before feeding probably help or aid in the fast digestion of these insect larvae.

        Estimates of combining ability for vegetative stage cold tolerance in rice

        Ninety F₁ rice hybrids were evaluated for combining abilily for low-temperature tolerance at the vegetative growth stage. Evaluation was done by subjecting the plant to 17℃ and 20℃ water temperatures in separate blocks from 20 days afler transplanting to maturity. Combining ability analysis showed the predominance of additive gene action. The Japonica parents viz. Shimokita, K48, SR5204-91-4-1, Stejaree 45, Barkat and K332 were good donors for vegetative stage cold tolerance. The best sca combinations involved both high and low general combiners. Parental performance per se was a good indicator of gca effects of the parents.

        Estimates of combining ability for cold tolerance at reproductive stage in rice

        Ninety F₁ rice hybrids, produced by crossing 15 rice cultivars having lowtemperature tolerance at different growth stages with 6 high yielding elite IRRI cultivars, were evaluated for combining ability for reproductive stage cold tolerance. Evaluation was done by subjecting the plants to 17℃ and 20℃ water temperatures, in separate blocks, from 20 days after transplanting to maturity. Both general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability variances were significant, with estimates of GCA being larger for all traits, showing predominance of additive type of gene action. The indica parents viz. Samgangbyeo, Suweon 287, Shoa-Nan-Tsan, K 39-96, China 988, IR 9202, Leng Kwang, IR 7167 and IR 15889 proved to be good donors for reproductive stage cold tolerance. Parental performance per se was a good indicator of general combining ability effects of the parents, but no association was observed between per se performance of the crosses and their specific combining ability effects.

        Detection of Serum IgE Specific to Mite Allergens by Immuno-PCR

        Background: Although a skin test is the primary option for detecting allergen-specific IgE in clinics, the serum IgE immunoassay is also important because it allows for the diagnosis of allergy without any accompanying adverse effect on the patient. However, the low detection limit of IgE levels by immunoassay may restrict the use of the method in some occasions, and improving its sensitivity would thus have a significant implication in allergy-immunology clinics. Methods: In this study, we attempted to detect specific serum IgE by using immuno-polymerase chain reaction (IPCR) which combinesthe antigen-antibody specificity of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) with the amplification power of PCR. Results: Our results demonstrated that Blo t5-specific serum IgE can be detected by IPCR with a 100-fold higher sensitivity than ELISA, and cross-reactivity of serum IgE to other mite allergens is able to be analyzed by using only 0.3 μl of serum sample. Use of real-time IPCR seemed to permit more convenient determination of specific serum IgE as well. Conclusion: We believe that IPCR can serve as a valuable tool in determining specific serum IgE, especially when the amount of serum sample is limited.       • Development of SDR Testbed for Ultra-Dense Networks

        The ultra-dense network (UDN) is a next generation communication technology that can maximize spectral efficiency per unit area by simultaneously transmitting and receiving information through the same spectrum to multiple terminals through cooperative communication between a plurality of base stations arranged at very high density. In this paper, software defined radio (SDR) platform is designed for a UDN testbed for proving the spectral efficiency improvement of UDN structure in ultra-high-density environment and enabling verification of UDN core technologies. The SDR platform for validating UDN core technologies includes: 1) a software structure that implements core technologies, 2) a hardware structure capable of transmitting and receiving wireless signals, and 3) a structure capable of monitoring the performance of core technologies. USRPs and NI LabVIEW NXG 2.1v are used as the hardware and software platforms, respectively.

        Potential Use of Clayey Soil in Aerated Lightweight Concrete

        The compressive and flexural strengths of sand-based Aerated Lightweight Concrete (ALC) and Soil-based Aerated Lightweight Concrete (SALC) of density 1100 kg/m3 to 1800 kg/m3 with different cement content (filler:binder = 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2) were investigated using prism specimens (40 mm×40 mm×160 mm). The results on the 120-day, indicated that the strength properties of ALC outperformed SALC by the range of 3.6% to 79.4% on compressive strength and 3.7% to 137.0% on flexural strength for identical density and cement content. Nevertheless, soil is still suitable to be used as an alternative material for the production of aerated lightweight concrete based on their strength properties. Multiple regression models were developed to correlate the strength properties of aerated lightweight concrete and its governing factors. From the analysis, it is found that density has the greatest influence on the strength properties of aerated lightweight concrete, followed by the age of the specimens.

      • Detection and genetic analysis of aquabirnaviruses in subclinically infected aquarium fish.

        <P>Aquabirnaviruses (ABVs) cause serious diseases in a variety of fish species used worldwide in aquaculture and have been isolated from a variety of healthy fish and shellfish species. The type species of ABV is Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV), which is the causative agent of a highly contagious disease in juvenile salmonid fish. Marine birnaviruses (MABVs) have been isolated from various marine fish and shellfish. In Korea, ABV infection has been identified in several fish and shellfish. The current study presents sequence data from nested polymerase chain reaction products of 3 ABV strains obtained from different species of asymptomatic aquarium fish collected from a private commercial aquarium in Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of these strains, based on the partial nucleotide sequence of the VP2/NS junction, placed them within the genogroup VII (95-99% bootstrap confidence), which also contains MABV. The subclinically infected fish may be a source of MABV infection for other susceptible fish species inside the aquarium and potentially represent a serious challenge for the management of MABV infections. Additionally, the presence of MABV in these subclinically infected aquarium fish imported from other countries indicates that there is a need for the establishment of appropriate quarantine practices.</P>
