This article describes and analyzes the regulation of transparency in American nonprofit organizations in comparison to similar regulation of American public sector agencies. Transparency is a symbol for accountability and a critically important dimension of nonprofit organizations, which are private and voluntary but chartered by government for public purposes. Federal policy aimed at nonprofit transparency relies on formal regulation, and some guidance can be drawn from examining nonprofit regulation in comparison to the formal regulatory schemes designed to ensure transparency of public sector government agencies. However, formal transparency regulation of nonprofits is not as extensive as that of the public sector, and current illustrations from the nonprofit arena indicate that formal regulation does not address typical public concerns about nonprofit transparency. Instead, nonprofits may need to turn to normative sector values, including trust and collaboration, in order to be considered transparent in the current environment.

The impact of chronic inflammatory conditions on immune function is substantial, and the simultaneous application of anti-inflammatory and immune modulating modalities has potential for reducing inflammation-induced immune suppression. Sorghum-based foods, teas, beers, and extracts are used in traditional medicine, placing an importance on obtaining an increased understanding of the biological effects of sorghum. This study examined selected anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties in vitro of Jobelyn™, containing the polyphenol-rich leaf sheaths from a West African variant of Sorghum bicolor (SBLS). Freshly isolated primary human polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear cell subsets were used to test selected cellular functions in the absence versus presence of aqueous and ethanol extracts of SBLS. Both aqueous and nonaqueous compounds contributed to reduced reactive oxygen species formation by inflammatory PMN cells, and reduced the migration of these cells in response to the inflammatory chemoattractant leukotriene B4. Distinct effects were seen on lymphocyte and monocyte subsets in cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The aqueous extract of SBLS triggered robust upregulation of the CD69 activation marker on CD3− CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells, whereas the ethanol extract of SBLS triggered similar upregulation of CD69 on CD3+ CD56+ NKT cells, CD3+ T lymphocytes, and monocytes. This was accompanied by many-fold increases in the chemokines RANTES/CCL5, Mip-1α/CCL3, and MIP-1β/CCL4. Both aqueous and nonaqueous compounds contribute to anti-inflammatory effects, combined with multiple effects on immune cell activation status. These observations may help suggest mechanisms of action that contribute to the traditional use of sorghum-based products, beverages, and extracts for immune support.
Families, Funerals and Facebook: Reimag(in)ing and ‘Curating’ Toraja Kin in Trans-local Times
Kathleen M. Adams 서강대학교 동아연구소 2015 TRaNS(Trans –Regional and –National Studies of Sou Vol.3 No.2
The Sa’dan Toraja of upland Sulawesi, Indonesia have long been celebrated in the anthropological literature for their elaborate procession-filled mortuary rituals, which draw vast networks of kith and kin to mourn, memorialise, and reaffirm familial bonds and obligations. Whether residing in the homeland or abroad, most Torajans underscore funeral rites as the most vital expression of Toraja familial and cultural identity. Although some estimates suggest that more Torajans now reside off-island and overseas than remain in the homeland, extended familial funerals in the homeland continue to have a centripetal physical, economic and emotional pull. While various scholars have documented the ways in which remittances from Toraja migrants or the presence ofinternational tourists have transformed Toraja funerals in recent decades, this article focusses on the role ofsocial media in navigating global familial relationships and rituals. Indonesia has the largest number ofFacebook subscribers in the world, and this study offers the first exploration ofthe ways in which Facebook interweaves farflung familial relationships. This study also examines house-society orientations in the Toraja highlands and addresses the use of Facebook by Torajans in the homeland to cultivate continued allegiances to ancestral houses (around which extended Toraja families are oriented). Finally, this article also examines a large-scale 2012 Toraja funeral in order to spotlight the contours of the Toraja family in the current era of neoliberalism and cyber-technologies. The article offers insights into the ways in which various Torajans navigate social media and non-local corporations to image, reimagine and negotiate familial identities for various audiences (local, national and transnational).
Feminist engagement with restorative justice

Classifiers and Semantic Type Coercion: Motivating a New Classification of Classifiers
( Kathleen Ahrens ),( Chu Ren Huang ) 한국언어정보학회 1996 국제 워크샵 Vol.1996 No.-
This paper argues that the traditional view that nouns refer only to classic individuals is inadequate. Instead. we argue that nouns are coerced by different types of classifiers to refer to kinds and cvents as well as to individnals. This finding is important because 1) the semantics of nouns involves more than just lndividuals, and 2) it is the first time that the previously abstract semantic distinction between kinds. individuals and events is found to be instantiated in a particular system of a natural language grammar, namely, the classifier system.
Metaphorical Paradoxes: A window on the conceptual system
( Kathleen Ahrens ) 한국언어정보학회 1995 국제 워크샵 Vol.1995 No.-
This paper reviews the inconsistencies surrounding the English metaphor of the Self and demonstrates that 1) similar metaphorical paradoxes concerning the Self exist in Chinese and Japanese, and 2) these paradoxes occur in English, Japanese, and Chinese because the Inner Self (our internal voice) is being compared either with the Social Self (how we interact with others) or the Physical Self (our body) Thus the paradoxes reflect what the psychologist William James referred to in 1892 as the ``spiritual me. material me. and social me``. In addition. these paradoxes mirror neurological phenomena found in brain damaged patients. In short. the linguistic and neurological findings point to a strikingly similar portrait of the Self. and argue for studying metaphorical paradoxes in greater detail in order to gain insight into other aspects of our conceptual framework.
