Culture-Specific Number Symbolism in Restaurant Prices
Udo Wagner,Jutatip Jamsawang 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2014 Global economic review Vol.43 No.1
Most cultures assign additional meanings to numbers, beyond their prevalent (arithmetic) denotation. Such connotations might extend to other settings too, such as price perceptions. Therefore, this study summarizes the (positive and negative) characteristics associated with certain numbers by traditions, religious faith, and cultural heritage. The empirical investigation focuses on restaurant prices in three cultural settings (Chinese, Indian, and Islamic), facilitated by the increasing proportions of multicultural populations and numbers of ethnic restaurants. Consistent with predictions, the number 8 for Chinese, number 7 for Islamic, and numbers 5 and 9 for Indian products are more common in the cross-cultural comparison.

This research represents the runner BIB number recognition system to develop image processing study which solves problems and increases efficiency about runner image management in running fairs. The runner BIB number recognition system processes runner image to recognize BIB number and time when runner appears in media. The information from processing has collected to applicative later. BIB number position is on BIB tag which attach on runner body. To recognize BIB number, the system detects runner position first. This process emphasize on runner face detection in images following to concept of researcher then find BIB number in body-thigh area of runner. The system recognizes BIB number from BIB tag which represents in media. This processing presents 0.80 in precision value, 0.81 in recall value and F-measure is 0.80. The results display the runner BIB number recognition system has developed with high efficiency and can be applied for runner online communities in actual situation. The runner BIB number recognition system decreases problems about runner image processing and increases comfortable for runners when find images from running fairs. Moreover, the system can be applied in commercial to increase benefits in running business.

Far-infrared (FIR) vacuum is an advanced drying technique that has recently been applied in food processing. Optimal drying conditions for processing tea from Miang leaves using FIR vacuum drying were investigated. Response surface methodology with a central composite design was used to design, analyze, and predict the optimal time and temperature conditions for FIR vacuum drying, taking into account the physicochemical properties of Miang leaves. When the temperature increased from 50 to 65℃ and the time from 60 to 120 min, the amount of epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate, and total catechins significantly (p<0.05) increased while the moisture content and water activity significantly (p<0.05) decreased, compared with controls. The physicochemical properties of dried Miang leaves were significantly (p>0.05) influenced by time and temperature, compared with controls. Drying conditions of 65℃ for 120 min are recommended for optimization of drying.

The main purpose of this paper is to find the etic dimensions of beliefs towards comparative advertising (CA) and to test their relationship with global attitude and acceptance of CA in a cross-cultural setting. Samples from four linguistic and cultural different countries were used: Austria, Canada, China and Peru. The research instrument was an online questionnaire. Results uncovered three main etic belief dimensions: truthfulness and deceitfulness as societal (micro) variables, and product information as personal (micro) variable. Invariance tests indicate that the items comprising the scales proposed to measure CA beliefs, global attitude and acceptance of CA possess equivalence across the four countries. Our model shows that beliefs indirectly affect acceptance of CA, which is mediated by global attitude toward CA. Results reveal similarities and differences across countries on the magnitude and importance of the beliefs and global attitude total effects upon acceptance. Finally, results are analyzed vis-à-vis the Hofstede’s national cultural dimensions, which indicate that uncertainty avoidance and individualism/collectivism help to explain the main differences across the countries.

Background: To evaluate the rate of pathologic high-risk factors, intermediate-risk factors, and treatment outcomes in early-stage cervical cancer patients undergoing radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy (RHPL). Materials and Methods: Medical records of stage IA-IIA1 cervical cancer patients who underwent RHPL during the 2006 to 2012 time period and patient follow-up data until December 2013 were reviewed. Results: Of 331 patients, 52 women (15.7%) had pathologic high-risk factors and 59 women (17.8%) had intermediate-risk factors without high-risk factors. All studied patients had an initial complete response. At median follow-up time of 40.9 months (range 1-103.3 months) and mean follow-up time of$ 43.3{\pm}25.3$ months, 37 women had disease recurrence and 4 women had died of disease. The most common site of recurrence was the pelvis (64.8%). Five-year and 10-year disease free survival rates were 96.1% and 91.5%, respectively. Five-year and 10-year overall survival rates were 100% and 99.4%, respectively. Independent factors related to recurrence were pelvic node metastasis (odds ratio [OR], 2.670; 95%CI, 1.001-7.119), and >1/3 cervical stromal invasion (OR, 3.763; 95%CI, 1.483-9.549). Conclusions: The rates of pathologic high-risk and intermediate-risk factors should be considered and disclosed when counseling patients regarding primary treatment by RHPL. Oncologic outcomes of primary surgical treatment for early-stage cervical carcinoma were found to be excellent.
