        In-vitro development of a temporal abutment screw to protect osseointegration in immediate loaded implants

        PURPOSE In this study, a temporal abutment fixation screw, designed to fracture in a controlled way upon application of an occlusal force sufficient to produce critical micromotion was developed. The purpose of the screw was to protect the osseointegration of immediate loaded single implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seven different screw prototypes were examined by fixing titanium abutments to 112 Mozo-Grau external hexagon implants (MG Osseous®; Mozo-Grau, S.A., Valladolid, Spain). Fracture strength was tested at 30° in two subgroups per screw: one under dynamic loading and the other without prior dynamic loading. Dynamic loading was performed in a single-axis chewing simulator using 150,000 load cycles at 50 N. After normal distribution of obtained data was verified by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, fracture resistance between samples submitted and not submitted to dynamic loading was compared by the use of Student's t-test. Comparison of fracture resistance among different screw designs was performed by the use of one-way analysis of variance. Confidence interval was set at 95%. RESULTS Fractures occurred in all screws, allowing easy retrieval. Screw Prototypes 2, 5 and 6 failed during dynamic loading and exhibited statistically significant differences from the other prototypes. CONCLUSION Prototypes 2, 5 and 6 may offer a useful protective mechanism during occlusal overload in immediate loaded implants.

        Effect of aging on tear strength and cytotoxicity of soft denture lining materials; in vitro

        PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of aging on the tear strength and cytotoxicity of four soft denture lining materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four commonly used soft denture lining materials, (Coe-Comfort™GC America Inc., Alsip, IL, USA; Coe-Soft™GC America Inc., Alsip, IL, USA; Visco-gel Dentsply Caulk Milford, DE, USA; and Sofreliner Tough M Tokuyama Dental Corporation Tokyo, Japan) were selected. Sixty trouser-leg designed specimens per lining material were fabricated using a stainless steel mold for tear strength testing. The specimens were divided into non-thermocycling and 1000-, and 3000- thermocycling groups. For the cytotoxicity test, twenty-four disk shaped specimens per material were fabricated using a stainless steel mold. The specimens were soaked in normal saline solution for 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. Cytotoxicity was measured by XTT assay in L929 mouse fibroblasts. Data were analyzed by two way analysis of variance and Dunnett’ test (P<.05). RESULTS. Before thermocycling, Sofreliner Tough M (10.36 ± 1.00 N) had the highest tear strength value while Coe-Comfort™(0.46 ± 0.10 N) had the lowest. After 3000 cycles, Sofreliner Tough M (9.65 ± 1.66 N) presented the highest value and Coe-Comfort™(0.42 ± 0.08 N) the lowest. Sofreliner Tough M, in all incubation periods was the least toxic with significant differences compared to all other materials (P<.05). Coe-Comfort™ Coe-Soft™ and Sofreliner Tough M did not show any significant differences within their material group for all incubation periods. CONCLUSION. This in vitro study revealed that aging can affect both the tear strength and cytotoxicity of soft denture materials depending on the composition.

        PharmacoNER Tagger: a deep learning-based tool for automatically finding chemicals and drugs in Spanish medical texts

        Automatically detecting mentions of pharmaceutical drugs and chemical substances is key for the subsequent extraction of relations of chemicals with other biomedical entities such as genes, proteins, diseases, adverse reactions or symptoms. The identification of drug mentions is also a prior step for complex event types such as drug dosage recognition, duration of medical treatments or drug repurposing. Formally, this task is known as named entity recognition (NER), meaning automatically identifying mentions of predefined entities of interest in running text. In the domain of medical texts, for chemical entity recognition (CER), techniques based on hand-crafted rules and graph-based models can provide adequate performance. In the recent years, the field of natural language processing has mainly pivoted to deep learning and state-of-the-art results for most tasks involving natural language are usually obtained with artificial neural networks. Competitive resources for drug name recognition in English medical texts are already available and heavily used, while for other languages such as Spanish these tools, although clearly needed were missing. In this work, we adapt an existing neural NER system, NeuroNER, to the particular domain of Spanish clinical case texts, and extend the neural network to be able to take into account additional features apart from the plain text. NeuroNER can be considered a competitive baseline system for Spanish drug and CER promoted by the Spanish national plan for the advancement of language technologies (Plan TL).

        La Semana Tragica de 1909 y el Movimiento Democratico de Gwangju de 1980: Analisis comparativo de dos insurrecciones populares del siglo XX

        Se cumple este ano el centenario de una de las mayores agitaciones sociales de la historia contemporanea espanola, cuya trascendencia sociopolitica marco decisivamente el devenir de los ultimos anos de la Espana de la Restauracion: la Semana Tragica de 1909. En Barcelona, una huelga general de las clases trabajadoras en protesta por el llamamiento a filas de reservistas para la campana belica de Marruecos se vio transformada en una violenta insurreccion popular que, por espacio de una semana mantuvo a la ciudad aislada y en desgobierno. En este breve trabajo nos proponemos comparar dicho acontecimiento con otra revuelta ocurrida en diferente tiempo y lugar-aunque dentro del mismo siglo-, y de la que en mayo de 2010 se cumpliran treinta anos: el Movimiento Democratico de Gwangu en la primavera de 1980. El 18 de mayo, los ciudadanos se sublevaron indignados ante la brutalidad con la que fuerzas del ejercito reprimian a los estudiantes que se manifestaban pacificamente en favor de la democracia e iniciaron una revuelta que tardaria diez dias en ser sofocada. Ambas insurrecciones fueron reprimidas con dureza y se saldaron con centenares de victimas mortales y multitud de heridos. El presente estudio comparativo intenta reflejar, ademas de las logicas diferencias, la cantidad considerable de coincidencias que, a pesar del notable distanciamiento cultural y espacial que las separan, se aprecian entre ambas revueltas. Mediante el analisis de las similitudes y diferencias pretendemos extraer conclusiones que nos permitan comprender major las rezones que llevan al estallido espontaneo de conflictos sociales de este tipo y los mecanismos de control que emplean los organos de poder para contrarrestarlos y restaurar el orden establecido.

      • Poster Session : PS 0439 ; Infectious Disease ; Extensively Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Bacteremia in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients

        Background: We sought to determine the risk factors, molecular epidemiology, antibiotic therapy and outcomes of bacteremia due to extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Methods: All episodes of bacteremia occurring in SOT recipients were prospectively documented from 2007 to 2013. Results: Of 318 episodes of bacteremia prospectively documented from 2007 to 2013, 49 were due to P. aeruginosa. Thirty-one strains (63%) were XDR, defi ned by non-susceptibility to =1 agent in all but =2 antipseudomonal antimicrobial categories. Time from transplantation to bacteremia was shorter in cases caused by XDR P. aeruginosa than in those due to other etiologies (median 66 days vs. 278; p=0.03). Factors independently associated with XDR P. aeruginosa bacteremia were prior transplantation, nosocomial acquisition, and septic shock at onset. XDR P. aeruginosa isolates belonged to a single clone (ST-175). Compared to patients with bacteremia due to other etiologies, those with bacteremia due to XDR P. aeruginosa more frequently received inadequate empirical antibiotic therapy. Persistence of bacteremia, shock, respiratory failure, ICU admission and need for mechanical ventilation were more frequent in patients with XDR P. aeruginosa. The overall case-fatality rate was higher among patients with XDR P. aeruginosa bacteremia than in the others (38% vs. 16%; p=0.009). Conclusions: Bacteremia due to XDR P. aeruginosa should be carefully considered when selecting empirical antibiotic therapy for hospitalized SOT recipients with prior transplantation presenting with septic shock.

        Jerusalem: Legal Status, Condominium and Middle East Peace

        Any diplomatic process that is serious about achieving a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians must provide an answer to the question: what to do about Jerusalem? The city is ground zero for the Middle East conflict. It is holy to the world’s three great monotheistic religions—Judaism, Christianity and Islam. And, with a new U.S. president committed to tackling the Middle East peace process, the question of how to deal with Jerusalem is rendered all the more pertinent and timely. A lesser-known proposition for solving the Jerusalem question is based on an idea in international law called “condominium.” The purpose of this Article is to analyze the condominium model as a solution to the Jerusalem question. The conclusion of this Article is that, in the present circumstances, the condominium model is not a compelling template for resolving the territorial dispute over Jerusalem.

        Thailand’s online reptile market decreases but shifts toward native species during COVID-19

        The recent COVID-19 pandemic presented the world with a crisis of incredible scale and made wildlifemarkets the focal point of authorities. Scientific literature on COVID-19 and wildlife trade over whelmingly focused on the zoonotic risks of wildlife markets. As many physical marketplaces for wildlifewere faced with closure or restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19, alternative sale platforms weresought. I monitored social media platforms in Thailand during the pandemic and compared this withdata obtained in 2016. I found a significant reduction of lizards and snakes offered for sale on socialmedia, compared with before the pandemic. Although the quantity decreased, I found that the number ofspecies almost doubled in snakes, of which unprotected native species increased by 245%. Transportrestrictions would limit the mobility of harvesters and interrupts trade chains, and thus could explain thereduced number of snakes and lizards for sale. However, the increase in native species for sale shows thatthe impact of this international trade disruption could shift focus from international trade to what islocally available. Potentially having serious consequences for the conservation of local species and in linewith previous studies documenting increased poaching rates and wildlife crime incidents.

        Endemic Vietnamese reptiles in commercial trade

        Endemic species can be especially vulnerable to overexploitation because of their restricted range, andtheir trade can quickly become a significant threat. Yet, trade in endemic species is not well documentedas many endemic species lack domestic and/or international trade regulations. Vietnam is the home toapproximately 470 reptile species, 136 of which are considered endemic. The high number of valuableendemic species makes Vietnam an attractive target for reptile collectors. We analyzed the Conventionon International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Trade Database and the LawEnforcement Management Information System database for import and export data of Vietnameseendemic reptile species. Moreover, we added data from an online survey and a physical market survey inJapan. Evidence was found of a minimum of 2054 individuals from seven endemic species in international commercial trade, tied to 10 countries. Only three of the seven endemic species found in trade arecurrently subjected to international trade regulations under the Convention on International Trade inEndangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and domestic trade regulations. This manuscript provides abaseline of the availability of endemic Vietnamese reptiles in international trade and that few endemicspecies are found on the international market and in trade records. However, those that were found areof concern because of the lack of population assessments and likely laundering of parent stocks.

        Differentiation of fibrotic and inflammatory component of Crohn’s disease-associated strictures

        Patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) commonly develop bowel strictures, which may contain various degrees of inflammation and fibrosis. While predominantly inflammatory strictures may benefit from a medical anti-inflammatory treatment approach, fibrotic strictures would require endoscopic balloon dilation or surgery. Cross-sectional imaging surpasses endoscopy for characterization of stenotic segments and potentially may contribute to the optimal clinical management of these patients. This short review aims to discuss the potentialities and limitations of cross-sectional imaging techniques for assessing bowel fibrosis in patients with CD. (Intest Res 2020;18:144-150)
