Vol.0 No.26
This paper aims at presenting some important topics in John Henry Newman’s The Idea of a University in order to reflect the reality and the developmental prospect of contemporary Korean Catholic universities. In the body, this paper first presents four topics in the book of Newman which have still timeliness in these days: The purpose of establishing a Catholic University, the integrating role of Theology as Science, the importance of teaching Liberal Arts Knowledge, and the duties of the Church on the basis of Catholic Humanism. Second, it introduces some views of contemporary American Scholars about Newman’s book to consider the problems of university in the context of Globalization. Third, the writer enumerates several points to which one can refer in making visions of a Catholic university: the integrating vision and the uniqueness which should reveal the identity of a Catholic university, the importance of education, the symmetry between Liberal Arts education and the professional education, the connection of the university research agenda with the practical issues of the time, and the effective university administration in the tendency of developing electronic university. In the conclusion, the writer alluded to the financial crisis of a university and emphasized the solidarity among the members of Catholic universities.

Recently, in human medicine and veterinary medicine, interest in syn- thetic bone graft is increasing. Among them, bone morphogenic protein (BMP) is currently being actively researched and applied to clinical trials. However, BMP has the disadvantage of being expensive and easily absorbed into surrounding tissues. Therefore, BMP requires the use of small amounts and rhBMP (recombi- nant human bone morphogenetic protein)-2 carriers that can be released slowly. Hydrogel has the property of swelling a large amount of water inside when it is aqueous solution, and when it is, it consists of more than 90 percent water. Using these properties, hydrogels are often used as rhBMP-2 carrier. The scaffold used in this study is a hydrogel made from which keratin is extracted using hu- man hair and based on it. In this study, we wanted to see the effect of bone for- mation in the calvarial defect model by using keratin-based hydrogel made with human hair as a scaffold. The experiment was conducted by dividing 3 groups a total of 12 mice. Calvarial bone defect is set to all 4 mm diameters. Bone for- mation was evaluated by using gross evaluation, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), immunohistochemistry. Groups using keratin-based hydrogel were significantly observed compared to Group 1s, and the most bone formations were found when rhBMP-2 and hydrogel were used. This represents the supe- riority of the functions of the rhBMP-2 carrier by a new material, keratin-based hydrogel. Through gross evaluation, micro-CT, and immunohistochemistry, we can confirm that keratin-based hydrogel is a useful rhBMP-2 carrier.
The Representation of a Dystopian Future and Neoliberalism in The Windup Girl
Vol.2020 No.10
In his award winning speculative novel The Windup Girl, Paolo Bacigalupi depicts the devastating effects of western capitalism with its neoliberal policies on the third world countries in relation to ecological issues. Thailand is the only nation that has developed new gene-hacked produces and fruits on their own and resisted this foreign pressures that demand opening the market for the agricultural crops which have been biotechnologically developed by global companies. Embedded also in this ingenious infiltration of foreign global companies are scientific and technological products such as windup girls that are specially created cyborgs for many purposes by Japanese due to the dwindling number of people and work forces. Bacigalupi not only warns the rivalry between western companies that only strive to gain profits in every corner of the world but he also suggests that we renew the way of our life and the understanding of the world we live in so that we can transform the naïve attitude towards environmental issues and nation/state policies that have contributed to endangering the earth. This paper examines the way in which the author represents the neoliberal drives of western countries that have complicated the order of international economic and trade within the third world nations and how that move has caused internal conflicts and problems in the affected nations as it struggles to defend nation/state and political capability. It also tries to understand the author’s reflection on how we can maintain our human nature in the posthuman era in which we will have to coexist with new people of novelty like windup girls in the midst of some contradictions inherent in the economic and political forces of the North world. The author helps us to confront new challenges we may face when the new technological revolution leads us to recognize ethical issues on human nature.
Ensemble UNet 3+ for Medical Image Segmentation
2023 International Journal of Internet, Broadcasting an Vol.15 No.1
In this paper, we proposed a new UNet 3+ model for medical image segmentation. The proposed ensemble(E) UNet 3+ model consists of UNet 3+s of varying depths into one unified architecture. UNet 3+s of varying depths have same encoder, but have their own decoders. They can bridge semantic gap between encoder and decoder nodes of UNet 3+. Deep supervision was used for learning on a total of 8 nodes of the E-UNet 3+ to improve performance. The proposed E-UNet 3+ model shows better segmentation results than those of the UNet 3+. As a result of the simulation, the E-UNet 3+ model using deep supervision was the best with loss function values of 0.8904 and 0.8562 for training and validation data. For the test data, the UNet 3+ model using deep supervision was the best with a value of 0.7406. Qualitative comparison of the simulation results shows the results of the proposed model are better than those of existing UNet 3+.
Passing and Racism in Charles Chesnutt’s The House Behind the Cedars
Vol.53 No.4
As a precursor of the discourse on the issue of race and passing in America, Charles Chesnutt, in his novel The House Behind the Cedars, argues that racial blending might help solve the race problem in America. Employing the trope of passing, he represents two siblings, John and Rena, who take different positions on passing for a white and end up living a different life. John pursues his own dream by passing as a white, leaving his family in poverty and distress, whereas Rena returns home after a brief period of passing as a white woman when she decides to work for the black community. Chesnutt’s narrative demonstrates the fluidity of the border of racial identity in the person of the passing figure in which he or she holds two sides of identity that can pass for either race. He criticizes the evil practice allowed under the name of law that has caused such social turmoils. Through the passing trope, Chesnutt represents the sheerly artificial constructedness of the discourse of race and tries to dismantle white racial supremacy. By making Rena die as a tragic mulatto at the end of the novel, Chesnutt demonstrates the powerful forces of racial prejudices inflicted on black persons of mixed blood.

Human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have been utilized as a promising source in regenerative medicine. However, the risk of teratoma formation that comes with residual undifferentiated PSCs in differentiated cell populations is most concerning in the clinical use of PSC derivatives. Here, we report that a monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting PSCs could distinguish undifferentiated PSCs, with potential teratoma-forming activity, from differentiated PSC progeny. A panel of hybridomas generated from mouse immunization with H9 human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) was screened for ESC-specific binding using flow cytometry. A novel mAb, K312, was selected considering its high stem cell-binding activity, and this mAb could bind to several human induced pluripotent stem cells and PSC lines. Cell-binding activity of K312 was markedly decreased as hESCs were differentiated into embryoid bodies or by retinoic acid treatment. In addition, a cell population negatively isolated from undifferentiated or differentiated H9 hESCs via K312 targeting showed a significantly reduced expression of pluripotency markers, including Oct4 and Nanog. Furthermore, K312-based depletion of pluripotent cells from differentiated PSC progeny completely prevented teratoma formation. Therefore, our findings suggest that K312 is utilizable in improving stem cell transplantation safety by specifically distinguishing residual undifferentiated PSCs. [BMB Reports 2022; 55(3): 142-147]
