        An Empirical Analysis on the Transfer of Agricultural Labor Surplus and the Farmers' Income Growth in China

        The growth of farmers' income is the crucial factor to hinder the sustainable economic development in China's countryside. Therefore, it is greatly important and applicable to study on the exploration of some new means to raise farmers' income. To show clearly the relationship between the increase of the net income per person of farmers and where it comes from, the paper makes a mathematic statistical analysis on the ratio of the net income per person of farmers, agricultural income, the income from the second and the third industry, and the labor payment in the total income. The main restrict factors of the farmers' income growth are the stagnant process of urbanization and the demand - supply changing tendency of the agricultural production market goes against the growth of farmers' income. Possible solutions and counter-measures are to readjust and update agriculture structure, to speed up the process of urbanization to pull the transference of surplus labors

      • Isoliquiritigenin-mediated p62/SQSTM1 induction regulates apoptotic potential through attenuation of caspase-8 activation in colorectal cancer cells

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Isoliquiritigenin (ISL) is a natural flavonoid that exhibits anticancer properties in various carcinoma cell types. However, the precise mechanism responsible for its anticancer activity has not been elucidated fully. In the present study, we examined ISL-mediated apoptotic mechanisms in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. ISL induced apoptosis in human HCT-116 cells and caused marked induction of p62/SQSTM1 mRNA and protein expression. Similarly, ISL potently inhibited <I>in vivo</I> tumor growth and induced p62/SQSTM1 expression in xenograft tumor tissues. In a p62/SQSTM1 siRNA transfection study, ISL-induced p62/SQSTM1 expression attenuated ISL-mediated apoptosis by reducing caspase-8 activation. ISL potentiated the apoptotic effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) on HCT-116 cells. However, ISL-induced p62/SQSTM1 expression also attenuated the potency of apoptosis induced by the combination of 5-FU and ISL. Our results demonstrate that ISL-induced p62/SQSTM1 upregulation affects ISL-mediated apoptotic potential through attenuation of caspase-8 activation in CRC cells. These findings broaden the understanding of the molecular basis of ISL-mediated apoptosis.</P>

      • A new chalcone derivative, 3-phenyl-1-(2,4,6-tris(methoxymethoxy)phenyl)prop-2-yn-1-one), inhibits phorbol ester-induced metastatic activity of colorectal cancer cells through upregulation of heme oxygenase-1

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Chalcone (1,3-diphenyl-2-propen-1-one) derivatives exert anti-cancer activity by targeting key molecules that can lead to carcinogenesis. We synthesized the chalcone derivative 3-phenyl-1-(2,4,6-tris(methoxymethoxy)phenyl)prop-2-yn-1-one (KB-34) and previously reported its anti-inflammatory activity in macrophages. In this study, we examined the anti-metastatic activity of KB-34 against human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells and elucidated its underlying molecular mechanisms. KB-34 treatment significantly inhibited 12-<I>O</I>-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced migration, as well as the invasion and proliferation of CRC cells (HT-29 and SW620). TPA-induced activation of NF-κB was also markedly suppressed by KB-34 in HT-29 cells. KB-34 suppressed the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7) at both the mRNA and protein levels in TPA-stimulated CRC cells (HT-29 and SW620). We also demonstrated that induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression in CRC cells (HT-29 and SW620) and HO-1 is required for KB-34-mediated suppression of the expression of MMP-7 in TPA-stimulated HT-29 cells. Additionally, the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 was significantly induced by treatment with KB-34 in CRC cells (HT-29 and SW620). Knockdown of HO-1 prevented the induction of p21 expression by KB-34 in HT-29 cells. Furthermore, we also demonstrated that 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) together with KB-34 produced a significantly greater inhibition of growth and stimulation of apoptosis of HT-29 cells than did 5-FU alone. In conclusion, KB-34 inhibits the TPA-stimulated metastatic potential of HT-29 cells by induction of HO-1 and may be a promising anti-cancer agent in chemotherapeutic strategies for CRC.</P>

        Development of lady beetle attractants from floral volatiles and other semiochemicals for the biological control of aphids

        Aphids are among the most destructive phytophagous pests of host plants, because of their rapid reproduction, parthenogenesis, extensive crop damage, and the transmission of many plant viruses. Since lady beetles are important predatory natural enemies of aphids, developing lady beetle attractants to increase their field abundance is vital for aphid control. Floral volatiles and other semiochemicals are reportedly attractive to lady beetles. In this research, a total of 58 floral volatiles were tested by Y-tube olfactometer assays, among which 29 were highly attractive to both Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Meanwhile, the results of wind tunnel trials showed that only isoamyl acetate, α-humulene, trans-3-hexen-1-ol, methyl salicylate, and β-pinene lure these two species. Thereafter, 15 semiochemicals from pests, natural enemies, and pest-infested crops were mixed with the selected floral volatiles, to determine optimum formulations for attracting lady beetles through wind tunnels and further field trials. Eventually, formulas (1) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate: trans-3-hexen-1-ol = 1:3:3:10; (5) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate:1-nonanal = 1:3:3:10; (8) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate: indole = 1:3:3:10 (1, 5, and 8 are labels used for the various formulations in field trials) were successfully verified to be attractive to lady beetles in both pumpkin and wheat fields. These formulations will be of great significance in developing integrated pest management strategies for aphid control.

        Melt-Electrospun Polyvinylbutyral Bonded Polypropylene Composite Fibrous Mat: Spinning Process, Structure and Mechanical Property Study

        In this study, a novel polyvinylbutyral (PVB) bonded polypropylene (PP) composite fibrous mat was fabricated viamelt-electrospinning. In order to enhance the structure stability and mechanical properties of pristine PP fibrous mat system,preparation and characterization of the composite fibrous material by mixing different percentages of PVB and PP wasdesigned. The PVB can form bonding point between the PP fibers, which can ease the slip phenomenon between strainedfibers. The structure, morphology, tensile and tearing stress were measured systematically. The resultants exhibited that thetensile stress and tearing strength of composite fibrous mats were increased from 30.13 to 43.73 kPa and from 0.07 to 0.5 N,respectively. Meanwhile, the straight jet length and whipping range of each electrospun jets were analyzed via the imagescaptured by a high-speed photography system during the spinning process. The experimental resultants depicted thatcomposite system can lead to longer straight jet length and smaller whipping range.

        The Application of Piezoelectric Materials in Smart Structures in China

        Piezoelectric materials have become the most attractive functional materials for sensors and actuators in smart structures because they can directly convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and vise versa. They have excellent electromechanical coupling characteristics and excellent frequency response. In this article, the research activities and achievements on the applications of piezoelectric materials in smart structures in China, including vibration control, noise control, energy harvesting, structural health monitoring, and hysteresis control, are introduced. Special attention is given to the introduction of semi-active vibration suppression based on a synchronized switching technique and piezoelectric fibers with metal cores for health monitoring. Such mechanisms are relatively new and possess great potential for future applications in aerospace engineering.

        Addressing Issues and Challenges in Disaster Emergency Resource Management - Practical Improvement Strategies for Shandong Province, China -

        This study aims to identify the issues and challenges within Shandong's disaster emergency resource management system and propose practical improvement plans to enhance its efficiency and responsiveness, thereby reducing the impact of disasters. In Shandong province, several key issues are identified in the management of disaster emergency resources: suboptimal management system for emergency resource reserves; structural deficiencies in emergency resource reserves; the gap in professional talent: challenges and strategies; limited legal oversight in management systems; and inadequate rotation of emergency resources. To address these challenges, we suggest practical improvement strategies: enhancing the reserve management system; strengthening the foundations of legal framework development; enhancing the efficacy of talent development programs; optimizing the rotation system for emergency resource management; advancements in infrastructure development strategies.

        Simplified damping analysis and suppression method for low-frequency oscillation introduced by virtual synchronous generator

        Similar to synchronous generators (SGs), the phenomenon of low-frequency oscillation (LFO) may occur when virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is involved in power grid, thereby negatively affecting the stability of the power system. In this paper, the oscillation mechanism of the power system composed of a VSG and infinite grid (single-VSG infinite-bus system) is analyzed, the conditions for the occurrence of LFO are unveiled, and a simplified damping selection method to suppress the LFO is provided, considering the adjustable damping of VSG. First, a small-signal model of the single-VSG infinite-bus system is established. The order of this system model is reduced using the damping torque analysis. Then, the mechanism of LFO under various dampings is analyzed. On this basis, a reasonable selection method of damping is drawn. The range of damping, where LFO converges, can be determined and the appropriate damping coefficient can be selected using this method. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulations and experiments.

        Assessment of clinical competency among TCM medical students using standardized patients of traditional Chinese medicine: A 5-year prospective randomized study

        Background: Some Western medicine schools in China established standardized patient (SP) programs for medical education. However, SP programs are rarely applied to the education of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of using standardized patient traditional Chinese medicine (SP-TCM) to improve clinical competency among TCM medical students. Methods: This study was a prospective, 2-group, parallel-training randomized trial over the course of 5 years. Data were collected from September 2016 to December 2020. Participants in each year were randomly allocated into the traditional-method training group or the SP-TCM training group (1:1) for a 3-month curriculum. Measurement of clinical competency among all trainees was based on a standardized examination composed of scores of medical record documentation, scores of TCM syndrome differentiation and therapeutic regimen, and checklist assessment from both SP-TCMs and TCM professionals. Feedback was collected using semi-constructive questionnaires from both groups. Results: Compared with those assigned to traditional-method training, those assigned to SP-TCM training demonstrated significantly greater post-training improvement in medical record documentation and TCM syndrome differentiation and therapeutic regimen. Moreover, SP-TCM trainees outscored those assigned to traditional training in the assessment for encounter performance given by independent SP-TCMs and TCM professionals. The SP-TCM method gained higher satisfaction of training efficacy and test performance than the traditional method. Conclusion: This SP-TCM program demonstrated great benefits for improving clinical competency among TCM medical students.
