Assessment of ASCE 7-10 for wind effects on low-rise wood frame buildings with database-assisted design methodology

        He, Jing,Pan, Fang,Cai, C.S. Techno-Press 2018 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.27 No.3

The design wind pressure for low-rise buildings in the ASCE 7-10 is defined by procedures that are categorized into the Main Wind Force-Resisting System (MWFRS) and the Components and Cladding (C&C). Some of these procedures were originally developed based on steel portal frames of industrial buildings, while the residential structures are a completely different structural system, most of which are designed as low-rise light-frame wood constructions. The purpose of this study is to discuss the rationality (or irrationality) of the extension of the wind loads calculated by the ASCE 7-10 to the light-frame wood residential buildings that represent the most vulnerable structures under extreme wind conditions. To serve this purpose, the same approach as used in the development of Chapter 28 of the ASCE 7-10 that envelops peak responses is adopted in the present study. Database-assisted design (DAD) methodology is used by applying the dynamic wind loads from Louisiana State University (LSU) database on a typical residential building model to assess the applicability of the standard by comparing the induced responses. Rather than the postulated critical member demands on the industrial building such as the bending moments at the knee, the maximum values at the critical points for wood frame buildings under wind loads are used as indicators for the comparison. Then, the critical members are identified through these indicators in terms of the displacement or the uplift force at connections and roof envelope. As a result, some situations for each of the ASCE 7 procedures yielding unconservative wind loads on the typical low-rise residential building are identified.

      • Inpatients' Knowledge about Primary Liver Cancer and Hepatitis

        He, Wen-Jing,Xu, Ming-Yan,Xu, Rui-Rui,Zhou, Xiao-Qiong,Ouyang, Jun-Jie,Han, Hui,Chen, Geng-Zhen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.8

Objective: To assess the level of an inpatient population's awareness about hepatitis and primary liver cancer (PLC), the most common type of which is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and then to initiate education of this group. Methods: A survey was conducted with 1300 participants within the inpatient unit in representative tertiary hospitals in the Chaoshan area of China. Structured questionnaires contained demographic data and statements about different aspects of liver cancer and hepatitis. The questionnaires were completed by trained medical practitioners after they had conducted the interviews. Results: One way ANOVA showed that the sample population lacked adequate knowledge about HCC and hepatitis. Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the participant's level of education had the greatest impact on their total knowledge score when other variables remained constant. Conclusions: The study demonstrated: a general lack of awareness amongst the participants about the preventative strategies, and the management options available for people with primary liver cancer and hepatitis; education level was an important factor affecting knowledge levels. The demonstrated deficiencies in people's knowledge about hepatitis and HCC, and their lack of subsequent protective behaviours are likely to play an important role in HCC and hepatitis transmission or prevention.

Modeling wind load paths and sharing in a wood-frame building

Jing He,Fang Pan,C.S. Cai 한국풍공학회 2019 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.29 No.3

While establishing adequate load paths in the light-frame wood structures is critical to maintain the overall structural integrity and avoid significant damage under extreme wind events, the understanding of the load paths is limited by the high redundant nature of this building type. The objective of the current study is to evaluate the system effects and investigate the load paths in the wood structures especially the older buildings for a better performance assessment of the existing building stock under high winds, which will provide guidance for building constructions in the future. This is done by developing building models with configurations that are suspicious to induce failure per post damage reconnaissance. The effect of each configuration to the structural integrity is evaluated by the first failure wind speed, a major indicator beyond the linear to the nonlinear range. A 3D finite-element (FE) building model is adopted as a control case that is modeled using a validated methodology in a highly-detailed fashion where the nonlinearity of connections is explicitly simulated. This model is then altered systematically to analyze the effects of configuration variations in the model such as the gable end sheathing continuity and the gable end truss stiffness, etc. The resolution of the wind loads from scaled wind tunnel tests is also discussed by comparing the effects to wind loads derived from large-scale wind tests.

Selection and evaluation of reference genes for qRT-PCR analysis of different developmental stages in Chilo suppressalis

        He Fu-Jing,Lu Ming-Xing,Du Yu-Zhou 한국응용곤충학회 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.24 No.4

Quantitative real-time RT-PCR is considered to valuable method for the analysis of gene expression. But for the data accuracy of gene expression, the normalization of data using reference genes is essential. In this study, we focus on the analysis of the relative expression of nine commonly used candidate reference genes in the different developmental stages and female and male pupae/adults of Chilo suppressalis, and expression stabilities were analyzed by the ΔCt method, geNorm, NormFinder, and RefFinder. The results showed that H3 was the most stable reference genes in the different developmental stages while EF1 was the optimal genes in pupae/adult of different sexes of C. suppressalis. To validate, the expression profile of the gene encoding heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) was investigated. The results showed that the transcription of target gene Hsp60 varied depending on the reference gene selected for normalization in different developmental stages, but the trend of expression of Hsp60 between the most stable reference gene combination and the least stable reference gene in pupae/adults of different sexes was the same. Therefore, it is imperative to select the reference genes to estimate target gene expression accurately in the specific experiment. This study provides scientific basis on functional analyses of the important genes contributed to the development and sex differentiation of C. suppressalis.

      • Numerical and computational modeling for nonlinear dynamic simulation of curved shells under multi-physical fields

        He, Jing,Sun, Yu Techno-Press 2021 Advances in nano research Vol.11 No.5

This research is devoted to explore the nonlinear vibration characteristics of smart nanoshells under multi-phyisical magneto-electric fields. The nano-scale shell has been treated as a thin shell with prescribed curvature which is modeled by nonlocal elasticity theory. The material composition of the smart nanoshell has been considered as a two phase composite for which the effective properties depend on the percentage of each phase. The discretization of governing equations has been carried out based on differential quadrature method (DQM). It has been exhibited that nonlinear vibration properties of curved nanoshells rely on nonlocality coefficient, piezoelectric phase percentage, radius of curvature, and electrical/magnetic potential.

Heavy Metals Immobilization in Soil with Plant-growthpromoting Rhizobacteria and Microbial Carbonate Precipitation in Support of Radish Growth

        Jing He,Qiuzhuo Zhang,Varenyam Achal 한국미생물·생명공학회 2020 한국미생물·생명공학회지 Vol.48 No.2

The application of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) supports the growth of plants in contaminated soil while ureolytic bacteria can immobilise heavy metals by carbonate precipitation. Thus, dual treatment with such bacteria may be beneficial for plant growth and bioremediation in contaminated soil. This study aimed to determine whether the PGPR Pseudomonas fluorescens could work in synergy with ureolytic bacteria to assist with the remediation of cadmium (Cd)- and lead (Pb)-contaminated soils. Pot experiments were conducted to grow radish plants in Cd- and Pb-contaminated soils treated with PGPR P. fluorescens and the results were compared with dual inoculation of P. fluorescens combined with ureolytic Staphylococcus epidermidis HJ2. The removal rate of the metals from the soil was more than 83% for Cd and Pb by the combined treatment compared to 17% by PGPR alone. Further, the dual treatment reduced the metal accumulation in the roots by more than 80%. The translocation factors for Cd and Pb in plant tissues in both treatments remained the same, suggesting that PGPR combined with the carbonate precipitation process does not hamper the transfer of essential metal ions into plant tissues from the soil.
