John Donne’s Devotions upon Emergent Occasions X: A Spiritual Diagnosis of Degeneration and Its Remedy

Vol.- No.117

The main purpose of this article is to examine how John Donne’s prose, D evotions upon Emergent Occasions X , manifests his unswerving investigation into the deterioration of the world and human beings, and concurrently the feasible solutions for its regeneration. I n his initial writings of the 1590s and early 1610s, D onne was concerned with giving forth the precise examples of corruptions deeply ingrained in individual, political, social, religious, and legal domains. D evotions upon Emergent Occasions X , composed during the author’s later period in 1623, points up human decay among the other 22 chapters of the same work. Chapter X , however, greatly elaborates on the way by which the phenomena of degeneration germinate and henceforth develop. Furthermore, the writer meditates on how to confront and solve the fatal problem of declination by turning to religious perception and awakening.

John Donne’s Manifestations of The Confessions: “Holy Sonnets” 7, 9, 11, and Devotions upon Emergent Occasions IX

Vol.41 No.2

This article aims to explore how John Donne manifests the main conceptions of The Confessions of St. Augustine in his divine poetry and prose, especially “Holy Sonnets” 7, 9, 11, and Chapter 9 of Devotions upon Emergent Occasions. In his sermons, Donne proclaims his sincere admiration for St. Augustine’s religious life and writings. Numerous textual evidences of “Holy Sonnets” and Devotions upon Emergent Occasions clearly reveal Donne’s considerable references to St. Augustine’s prominent ideas in The Confessions. Despite the similarities, Donne simultaneously endorses the speakers’ strife with converting to devout believers in the ordinance and mercy of God, while featuring their sense of guilt and precarious attitudes. Matthew Arnold’s “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse”: Instability of Religious Selfhood and Boundary of Action

Vol.61 No.4

This article examines how Matthew Arnold’s “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse” derails the traditional form of elegy by portraying thematic concerns such as the crisis of religious identity and the difficulty to take an action for its solution. “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse” focuses on the speaker’s pilgrimage to a seclusive residence of the monastery and conveys the writer’s considerations of the prevalent problem of his age. Whereas traditional elegies chiefly deal with the dead as their main subject, Arnoldian elegy accentuates the loss of both faith and sentiment of grief which, he believes, is necessary for recognizing the serious condition of the era itself. In addition, the author accentuates the protagonist’s struggle with solving matters like despair and a sense of ennui. The article unfurls the surrounding landscape of the monastery where the speaker articulates his internal bereavement and simultaneous recognition of its apparent irresolvable boundary.

Vol.17 No.1

The purpose of this article is to depict how Beowulf exhibits the complex strata of Christian resonations, especially through the characters` various perceptions of the identity of God and their vigorous trust in the power and workings of the Absolute Being in their particular circumstances and enterprises. A number of textual evidences in the poem clearly indicate that the writer propounds his Christian concerns not only through the protagonist Beowulf but also via minor figures such as Beow and Hrothgar. On the basis of the unique, individual articulations and experiences of these key characters, the poet deploys a thematic motif ― their awareness of the distinctive features of God as a creator, helper, protector, judge, and the giver of benevolence. In addition, their vibrant response to God consists in their relentless belief in His providence over their own lives and the Universe. In dealing with this matter, the Beowulf-poet accentuates the characters` credence to His dominance and substantial impact on their predicaments during the turbulent period of conflicts and battles in Anglo-Saxon England.

Vol.39 No.3

Edward Young’s Night Thoughts Ⅲ and John Donne’s The First Anniversary : Some Points of Contact

Vol.63 No.1

This article investigates how Edward Young reuses John Donne’s 1611 poem The First Anniversary in the third part of Night Thoughts (1742). Young creatively reshapes the latter’s work in light of structural pattern, characterization, and thematic concerns. Donne’s deep reflections on the virtue of the dead and his awareness of its opposite tainted features of this world motivate Young to conceive similar ideas. However, due to Young’s intention to scrutinize a variety of the internal facets of human virtues and infirmities. he creates multiple characters such as Narcissa, Philander, and Lorenzo in contrast with Donne’s portrayal of a single figure in The First Anniversary. The paper also examines how Young incorporates his prominent consideration of contemporaries’ need to meditate on the intangible world after death whilst preoccupied with materialistic comprehension of the universe and pursue sensual ways of life.

Vol.60 No.1

Unfolding Perceptions of Exile, Loss, and Spiritual Reinforcement in The Seafarer

Vol.37 No.1

The main purpose of this paper is to examine how The Seafarer, an Old English elegiac poem, embodies the speaker’s contemplations on the repercussion of his mournful experiences caused by exile and bereavement during his sea journey. The article also investigates how he turns to procreate a vibrant reaction to these morbid occurrences at the present time. Numerous textual evidences reveal his unswerving eagerness for overcoming the grief-stricken circumstances with wise acceptance. In this sense, the poem features a symbolic journey of the Seafarer, which connects with a mental procedure of undertaking his hardships taken from the separation from his comrades and the loss of his previous rest and glory. In spite of this distinctive elegiac motif, other textual instances, simultaneously, demonstrate the speaker’s vigorous response to such depressing mood. He expands his distressful view of the vicissitudes of the world into a dynamic, firm belief in the religious realm of permanence, hence regenerating his spiritual vitality and reinforcement.
