      • The Perception of Affective Prosody in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Typical Peers

2017 Clinical Archives of Communication Disorders Vol.2 No.2

Purpose: This study investigated the ability of children with ASD, including the minimally verbal subgroup, to perceive angry, neutral, and happy prosody in low-pass filtered speech when provided with a structured training paradigm. Methods: 13 children with ASD and 21 TD children completed the experimental task and two additional measures (nonverbal cognitive abilities, social responsiveness deficits) for regression analyses. Results: The ASD group recognized prosodic conditions significantly less accurately than the TD group, and took significantly longer times to recognize all sentences compared to the TD group. Angry prosody was consistently the most difficult to recognize across groups. Nonverbal cognitive abilities is a significant predictor variable for successful recognition of neutral and happy prosody; although low nonverbal cognitive skills do not preclude minimally verbal children with ASD from accurately perceiving affective prosody. Conclusions: The present study shows it is possible for minimally verbal children with ASD to successfully participate in experimental research using judgment tasks when provided with appropriate training.

      • Incorporating Divergent Thinking Training into Play Interventions For Preschool Children with Developmental Risk Factors

        Jessica M. Mallory,Lisa Kelly-Vance,Brigette Ryalls 대한사고개발학회 2010 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.20 No.2

Cognitive development and play development are mutually reinforcing. The present study measured the effect of an intervention intended to address both play skills and cognitive skills directly by incorporating divergent thinking prompts into a play-based intervention. The play of six at-risk children was observed and video recorded during independent pretend play. Qualitative and quantitative aspects of this play were recorded. Three at-risk children participated in six week divergent thinking intervention, while three comparison children participated in the general preschool curriculum. Children’s play was observed and recorded pre- and post-intervention. Results indicated that children who participated in the intervention did improve on measures of play quality, quantity, or both more than children who did not participate in the intervention. Implications for educators are discussed.

Effect of Acupuncture at Tender Points for the Management of Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Case Series

Jessica Lucia Neves Bastos,Josie Resende Torres Silva,Marcelo Lourenco Silva,Fernanda Lopes Buiatti de Araujo,Elisa Do´ria Pires 2013 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.6 No.3

Background: Affecting more women than men, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a rheumatic disorder characterized by chronic, diffuse and widespread musculoskeletal pain, and its pathogenesis is still unknown. Among the recommended treatments, acupuncture (for its analgesic effects) is an effective option for reducing the pain sensitivity and improving quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether acupuncture at tender points could effectively manage FMS. Methods: Eight female patients, with a previous diagnosis of fibromyalgia, underwent an initial assessment involving pressure algometer measurements for pain tolerance and questionnaires [Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Heath Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)], followed by treatment. Over a 2-month period, acupuncture was performed once per week at five tender points, located bilaterally at the occipital bone, trapezius, rhomboid, upper chest and lateral epicondyle. At the end of treatment, the participants underwent a reassessment for a final review of the applied methods. Results: We observed a reduction in the pain threshold and sensitivity and improvement in the areas of anxiety and depression and quality of life, which were demonstrated using the FIQ, BDI and BAI but not the HAQ.

        Jessica Carrignan,박양선(Yang Sun Park),고경(Kyung Koh),권현준(Hyun Joon Kwon),심재근(Jae Kun Shim) 한국발육발달학회 2015 한국발육발달학회지 Vol.23 No.4

Dystonia Responsive to Dopamine: POLG Mutations Should Be Considered If Sensory Neuropathy Is Present

2021 Journal Of Movement Disorders Vol.14 No.2

The POLG gene encodes mitochondrial DNA polymerase, and mutations in this gene cause a spectrum of disorders related to mitochondrialDNA depletion or deletion. Dystonia has only rarely been reported as an early and prominent manifestation of POLGmutations. We report a case of a 30-year-old male presenting with lower limb dystonia with peripheral neuropathy and demonstratethat the dystonia was levodopa responsive (with video findings). Whole-genome sequencing revealed biallelic variants inthe POLG gene: a known pathogenic variant [NM_001126131.2:c.2209G>C (p.Gly737Arg)] and a novel likely pathogenic variant[NM_001126131.2:c.3305A>C (p.Gln1102Pro)]. A genetic diagnosis was made before the appearance of more readily recognizablefeatures of mitochondrial disease, allowing us to avoid invasive tissue biopsies or potentially deleterious treatments, such assodium valproate. A POLG-related disorder should be suspected in cases of dystonia with peripheral neuropathy, and this diagnosismay have implications for further investigations and management.

      • Preconditions of Information Sharing Towards Value Creation: The Ugandan Government Perspective

( Jessica Namuddu ),( Hyun Gyu Oh ) 한국정책학회 2015 International Journal of Policy Studies Vol.6 No.2

Information is power and one of the most valuable government resources. Information boosts various parts of the economy, making it possible for all stakeholders to be linked to markets. In the era of globalization, information sharing across cultural and national boundaries has been recognized as a key for handling most critical problems. With this information at hand, there is an opportunity for the people to meaningfully participate in governance through coming in public discussions and contributing to decision making. Numerous factors, including organizational, technology, and individual characteristics, have also been proved to have a significant impact on information sharing in organizations. In the present research, information sharing is considered as a mediating variable and value creation as the outcome variable. This research also incorporates inspirational leadership as a moderating factor between the independent variables and information sharing as well as value creation. In terms of data collection, the survey method employing a questionnaire was used. The survey involved the ministry of foreign affairs and its employees (N=202) were the unit of analysis. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and AMOS software. The results of the analysis reveal many significant relationships among our research variables.

      • Conversion Intentions of Fashion Marketing Interns

        Jessica L. Hurst,Linda S. Niehm,Sunhee Park 한국마케팅과학회 2010 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.1 No.2

Fashion marketing/retailing is a major employment sector and driver of economic activity on a global level. Michael Porter’s (1985) popular value chain perspective demonstrates the importance of marketing and retail sales among a set of primary value creating activities for firms of all types. The value chain perspective also illuminates the importance of human resources as a support activity necessary to create value and assure the success of the firm. This research addresses the potential value for fashion marketing/retailing firms that may be achieved through employee development practices such as offering pre-professional internships. We focus on college students’ perceptions of fashion marketing/retail-related internships d the factors that cause interns to accept a job offer upon internship completion. This study specifically examines relationships between internship experiential components of psychological contracts, supervisory support, affective organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Unlike other industry sectors, retailing is not limited to a specific region and thus provides job opportunities for fashion and retail degree graduates on a nearly global scale. (“Future Employment in Retail…” 2009) In fashion maketing/retailing, there continues to be a high level of job attractiveness on the part of students, yet an observed disconnect exists between student career goals, expectations, and resulting job satisfaction. In reality, there is a much larger scope of opportunity in fashion related retail than just positions on the sales floor. Students must therefore obtain exposure through their courses and other types of learning, such as internships and practicum experiences, to realize the diversity of job opportunities in fashion marketing/ retailing including sales, buying, logistics, product development, merchandising, finance, human resources, and more (“Get Tailor–Made Training….” 2006). Additionally, many positions in fashion retailing are increasingly becoming cross-functional, suggesting that students need to have a complete understanding of the contemporary marketplace and be exposed to a variety of job settings and experiences (“Retail Rewards” 2006). This research is framed by psychological contract theory (Rousseau 2000) and organizational commitment theory (Van Maanen 1975). Psychological contract theory combines employer-based beliefs (i.e. employer obligations) with individual-based beliefs (i.e. employee obligations) regarding the nature of an agreement and the relationship between that individual and his/her employer. Combining perceptions of employer-based obligations with employee obligations allows for an ideal assessment of specific idiosyncratic information that is meaningful and unique to each individual, as well as the firm (Robinson, Kraatz and Rousseau 1994). Organizational socialization theory explains how newcomers learn the culture and values of new job settings (Van Maanen 1975). The theory also explicates how newcomers must develop the necessary work skills and adjust to the work environment (Feldman 1976). An on-line, self-administered, survey questionnaire was used to collect data in this study. The final sample consisted of 229 college students who completed a fashion merchandising, fashion marketing, fashion design, or retail-related internship. Following verification of the reliability of the measurement items, path analysis was conducted. A proposed path model of internship conversion was estimated using AMOS 5.0 statistical software. A modified final model showed that six paths were statistically significant and had positive path coefficients, as hypothesized. Hypothesis H1a stated that interns’ supervisory support will have a positive effect on psychological contract expectations of employer obligations.
