      • The Winding Road Past Consociational Democracy, Multicultural Society and Populist Rhetoric

2011 OMNES: The Journal of Multicultural Society Vol.2 No.2

The Netherlands long had the reputation of being very tolerant of diversity and many forms of societal deviance. This usually is explained by the long Dutch tradition of consociational democracy which allowed the living together within a single nation of different and even hostile denominations. When immigrants arrived from the 1960s and onwards their integration seemed to fit the same mold. When tolerance of these new religions and cultures did not stop socio-economic marginalization, public policy focused on the educational system and the labor market. Moreover the country reinvented itself as having become multi-cultural. Even though integration gained clear momentum in the new millennium, populist politics find wide support with an opposite claim: immigrants fail to integrate and their religion―Islam―is to blame.

Enhancing diffusion of consumer innovations on knowledge sharing platforms

Jeroen P.J. de Jong,Ivo Lindsen 기술경영경제학회 2022 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.30 No.1

In the past decade, studies showed that many consumers innovate for themselves. Sometimes their innovations are useful to others and potentially enhance social welfare. Unfortunately, diffusion fails as consumers lack incentives to inform others. Online knowledge sharing platforms (OKSPs), which can be stimulated with government support, may alleviate this problem. Platform communication may trigger passive consumers into active knowledge contributors. It is however uncertain if and how platform communication affects consumers who never shared designs before. We conducted a randomised controlled experiment with 715 members of an OKSP in 3D printing. Our intervention included a series of general and personal messages, tailored to various motives to share knowledge: altruism, status, ideology, learning and community. Platform members who never uploaded designs before are positively influenced by our intervention. Specifically, messages tailored to altruism, ideology and learning made platform members upload more designs. Hence, platform communication can improve the availability of innovative designs to potential adopters, and is a useful step to alleviate diffusion failure of consumer innovations

The species of the genus Platycheirus Lepeletier & Serville, 1828 (Diptera, Syrphidae) from Taiwan, with a discussion on intersex specimens

        Jeroen van Steenis,Andrew D. Young,Axel M. Ssymank,Tsung-Hsueh Wu (Bill),Shiuh-Feng Shiao,Jeffrey H. Skevington 한국응용곤충학회 2019 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.22 No.1

Following an international Diptera expedition in 2016, two new species of Platycheirus Lepeletier & Serville, 1828 were found in Taiwan. A total of three species from three different species groups are now known from Taiwan. The two new species, Platycheirus ferrumitarsis sp. n. and Platycheirus perpes sp. n., are described and their respective placement within the peltatus and ambiguus species groups is discussed. The other species, Platycheirus formosanus Shiraki, 1930, is illustrated and its placement is discussed. It is argued that P. nigritus Huo, Ren & Zheng 2007 should be considered a nomen dubium as it is discussed to be described based on an intersex specimen.

Mildly Processed Natural Eggshell Membrane Alleviates Joint Pain Associated with Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Study

Jeroen Lucas Kiers,Johannes Hendrikus Franciscus Bult 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.3

Poor joint health is a significant burden to society. Millions of people suffer from some form of joint-related disorder or disease, most often osteoarthritis (OA). It was hypothesized that chicken eggshell membrane (EM) is effective in the regeneration of cartilage and/or immunomodulation (oral tolerance), and as such relieves pain and stiffness in joints commonly affected in arthritis. We tested this hypothesis in a double-blind, placebo-controlled EM intervention study. Of 150 male and female volunteers, 40–75 years of age and diagnosed with knee OA, 75 were randomly assigned to the EM intervention group and 75 to the placebo group. During 12 weeks, subjects received a daily capsule containing either 300 mg of EM or a placebo. The main primary dependent variable consisted of self-reported pain ratings on a Numerical Rating Scale Pain (NRS-P) 6 weeks after study start. As secondary dependent variables served NRS-P scores collected after 12 weeks, and Knee injury and self-reported Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores [KOOS]). NRS-P scores decreased for both groups at approximately the same rate, but only EM relieved self-reported pain scores obtained with the KOOS questionnaire starting 1 week after initiation of treatment. This effect was significant for two of five KOOS category scores, that is, “Pain” and “Daily Life” functioning, aggregate pain, and functioning scores composed of complaint ratings for a wide variety of daily activities. These scores showed long-lasting improvement, and demonstrated that EM extract successfully reliefs knee OA pain and contributes to daily life functioning.

      • Spaces of Exception and Spaces of Normality: Towards a Relational Understanding of Violence and Peace in Muslim Mindanao

2017 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.5 No.1

This article argues for a relational and historical understanding of the violent conflict in Muslim Mindanao, the Philippines that goes beyond treating this region as a violent “space of exception,” but instead points at similarities and congruities with other parts of the Philippines. The consequences of this observation are discussed in relation to the ongoing peace negotiations in the region. Rather than seeing these as efforts potentially transforming Muslim Mindanao into a peaceful “space of normality,” it is argued that the impact of these negotiations will remain confined, as they solely tackle the national conflict scale and remain confined to only one type of armed organization.

      • Dwellings and the Dutch: a Dynamic Duo? : An institutional analysis of housing service and housing satisfaction in the Netherlands

Vol.2005 No.1

There is a close relationship between satisfaction with dwellings and the environment and the opportunities people have in the housing market. Satisfaction is also related to the price/quality ratio of the dwelling available to them. This paper focuses on this satisfaction and on the opportunities housing consumers have, by using a rational institutional approach. The paper also considers the tensions that exist in the Dutch housing market and the part housing services can play in reducing these tensions. The paper ends with some conclusions and suggestions for further research. The Dutch housing consumer is satisfied with his dwelling, the environment he lives in and the housing services he uses in his dwelling and the environment. But it is not given that this satisfaction will stay at the same level in the future. Society changes rapidly and people become less satisfied with society as a whole. On the other hand, they are still satisfied with their own life. The government tries to influence the satisfaction of people’s own life by improving the quality of dwellings, the environment people live in and the housing services they need. These improvements take a lot of time and means and in many cases the results aren’t visible right away, but will be visible in the future. There are many institutional obstacles in the Dutch housing market. We need to take a closer look in order to understand and remove them. One of the obstacles is a shortage in the housing market, both quantitative and qualitative. A broad range of factors causes this shortage, and the government is not able to solve this problem. They have got limited means at their disposal. This means there isn’t one solution, but it will take efforts by all the parties involved to solve the problems. When we look for instance at social housing we can see that housing corporations, which were closely related to the government, took care of social housing. To guarantee the quality of the housing stock some minimum quality requirements were laid down. The last fifteen years, these housing corporations received greater freedom to develop their own policy and became more independent from the government. The government leaves more developments to commercial parties. This was a major policy change, which doesn’t only occur in relation to housing policy, but is a result of changes in society as a whole and a policy change that is made in general. The change of policy leaves more and more space to commercial housing services, for instance in the field of health care or services focused on young families. The demand for these kind of services is increasing. More housing services are offered and these housing services are related to a broad range of needs. The role of housing services increases. This is increasingly important in a properly functioning market. All kinds of housing services are offered, but in view of the current deregulation and liberalization, much more will be possible in the future. In specific areas of policy, such as healthcare, many innovations are made. In the future these services can play a more important role in the choices people make in the housing market. But first of all has to be dealt with the problems at the Dutch housing market. Extra housing stock, combined with the liberalization of the policy on rents, could persuade people to move up the housing ladder. In a more competitive housing market, there are more opportunities for private suppliers to provide housing services. High-quality housing services could become an important means by which landlords could stand out in the housing market. There is less need for this in the current housing market. Because of the changes the society and the housing market is undergoing a lot of implications aren’t clear at this moment. That is why a lot of research on these changes will have to be done in the near future.

Complications of the retromandibular transparotid approach for low condylar neck and subcondylar fractures: a retrospective study

Vol.44 No.2

Objectives: The goal of this study was to evaluate the rates of complications, morbidity, and safety with the transparotid approach. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted and consisted of 53 surgically treated patients in the past five years for low condylar neck and subcondylar fractures. Only patients with malocclusion and who underwent open reduction with internal fixation with the retromandibular transparotid approach were included. The examined parameters were postoperative suboptimal occlusion, deflection, saliva fistula, and facial nerve weakness. Results: Fifty-three patients had an open reduction with internal fixation on 55 sides (41 males, 77.4%; mean age, 42 years [range, 18-72 years]). Four patients (7.5%) experienced transient facial nerve weakness of the marginal mandibular branch, but none was permanent. Four patients had a salivary fistula, and 5 patients showed postoperative malocclusion, where one needed repeat surgery after one year. One patient showed long-term deflection. No other complications were observed. Conclusion: The retromandibular transparotid approach is a safe procedure for open reduction and internal fixation of low condylar neck and subcondylar fractures, and it has minimal complications.

An Intervention Study on the Implementation of Control Banding in Controlling Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

2016 Safety and health at work Vol.7 No.3

Background: Management and workers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often find it hard to comprehend the requirements related to controlling risks due to exposure to substances. An intervention study was set up in order to support 45 SMEs in improving the management of the risks of occupational exposure to chemicals, and in using the control banding tool and exposure model Stoffenmanager in this process. Methods: A 2-year intervention study was carried out, in which a mix of individual and collective training and support was offered, and baseline and effect measurements were carried out by means of structured interviews, in order to measure progress made. A seven-phase implementation evolutionary ladder was used for this purpose. Success and failure factors were identified by means of company visits and structured interviews. Results: Most companies clearly moved upwards on the implementation evolutionary ladder; 76% of the companies by at least one phase, and 62% by at least two phases. Success and failure factors were described. Conclusion: Active training and coaching helped the participating companies to improve their chemical risk management, and to avoid making mistakes when using and applying Stoffenmanager. The use of validated tools embedded in a community platform appears to support companies to organize and structure their chemical risk management in a business-wise manner, but much depends upon motivated occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals, management support, and willingness to invest time and means.
