        Experimental investigation of shear connector behaviour in composite beams with metal decking

        Presented are experimental results from 24 full-scale push test specimens to study the behaviour of composite beams with trapezoidal profiled sheeting laid transverse to the beam axis. The tests use a single-sided horizontal push test setup and are divided into two series. First series contained shear loading only and the second had normal load besides shear load. Four parameters are studied: the effect of wire mesh position and number of its layers, placing a reinforcing bar at the bottom flange of the deck, normal load and its position, and shear stud layout. The results indicate that positioning mesh on top of the deck flange or 30 mm from top of the concrete slab does not affect the stud’s strength and ductility. Thus, existing industry practice of locating the mesh at a nominal cover from top of the concrete slab and Eurocode 4 requirement of placing mesh 30 mm below the stud’s head are both acceptable. Double mesh layer resulted in 17% increase in stud strength for push tests with single stud per rib. Placing a T16 bar at the bottom of the deck rib did not affect shear stud behaviour. The normal load resulted in 40% and 23% increase in stud strength for single and double studs per rib. Use of studs only in the middle three ribs out of five increased the strength by 23% compared to the layout with studs in first four ribs. Eurocode 4 and Johnson and Yuan equations predicted well the stud strength for single stud/rib tests without normal load, with estimations within 10% of the characteristic experimental load. These equations highly under-estimated the stud capacity, by about 40-50%, for tests with normal load. AISC 360-16 generally over-estimated the stud capacity, except for single stud/rib push tests with normal load. Nellinger equations precisely predicted the stud resistance for push tests with normal load, with ratio of experimental over predicted load as 0.99 and coefficient of variation of about 8%. But, Nellinger method over-estimated the stud capacity by about 20% in push tests with single studs without normal load.

      • Evaluation of Anticancer Activity of Curcumin Analogues Bearing a Heterocyclic Nucleus

        We report herein an in vitro anticancer evaluation of a series of seven curcumin analogues (3a-g). The National Cancer Institute (NCI US) Protocol was followed and all the compounds were evaluated for their anticancer activity on nine different panels (leukemia, non small cell lung cancer, colon cancer, CNS cancer, melanoma, ovarian cancer, renal cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer) represented by 60 NCI human cancer cell lines. All the compounds showed significant anticancer activity in one dose assay (drug concentration $10{\mu}M$) and hence were evaluated further in five dose assays (0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 and $100{\mu}M$) and three dose related parameters $GI_{50}$, TGI and $LC_{50}$ were calculated for each (3a-g) in micro molar drug concentrations (${\mu}M$). The compound 3d (NSC 757927) showed maximum mean percent growth inhibition (PGI) of 112.2%, while compound 3g (NSC 763374) showed less mean PGI of 40.1% in the one dose assay. The maximum anticancer activity was observed with the SR (leukemia) cell line with a $GI_{50}$ of $0.03{\mu}M$. The calculated average sensitivity of all cell lines of a particular subpanel toward the test agent showed that all the curcumin analogues showed maximum activity on leukemia cell lines with $GI_{50}$ values between 0.23 and $2.67{\mu}M$.

        Effect of Rib Geometry in Steel–Concrete Composite Beams with Deep Profiled Sheeting

        Presented are the results from a fi nite element model of steel–concrete composite beams with deep decks and a comparison with various analytical/design methods. Using a deck deeper than 80 mm are becoming popular with a desire for longer spanning capability and lower concrete volume. However, there are no design rules in either American or European design codes for using a deck deeper than 80 mm, as both codes limit the deck rib height to 75 and 85 mm, respectively for using the stud’s capacity formula. Therefore, research is needed to establish the design stud capacity in beams with decks deeper than 80 mm. After extensive validation, the 3-D FE model is used for a parametric study with tests having decks deeper than 80 mm. The parameters include rib geometries, studs’ layout and concrete slab reinforcements. The FE results showed that stud capacity with narrow and deep decks (100–150 mm) is about 70% of the conventional decking (60–80 mm deep). The stud capacities from the numerical results were compared to the predicted strengths from the design/theoretical models. While the equations from the concrete pull-out failure mode by Johnson and Yuan (Proc Inst Civ Eng Struct Build 128(3):252–263, 1998) gave reasonable predictions with a coeffi cient of variation as 11%, both EC4 and ANSI/AISC rules provided inaccurate and inconsistent predicted strengths. A generalised stud capacity formula should be developed in the design codes for decks deeper than 80 mm.

        A Novel Three Phase Series-Parallel Resonant Converter Fed DC-Drive System

        This paper presents the application of a single phase AC-to-DC converter using a three-phase series parallel (SPRC) resonant converter to variable speed dc-drive. The improved power quality converter gives the input power factor unity over a wide speed range, reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of ac input supply current, and makes very low ripples in the armature current and voltage waveform. This soft-switching converter not only possesses the advantages of achieving high switching frequencies with practically zero switching losses but also provides full ranges of voltage conversion and load variation. The proposed drive system is the most appropriate solution to preserve the present separately excited dc motors in industry compared with the use of variable frequency ac drive technology. The simulation and experimental results are presented for variable load torque conditions. The variable frequency control scheme is implemented using a DSP- TMS320LF2402. This control reduces the switching losses and current ripples, eliminates the EMI and improves the efficiency of the drive system. Experimental results confirm the consistency of the proposed approach.

      • Spectrum of the WHO Classification De Novo Myelodysplastic Syndrome: Experience from Southern Pakistan

        Background: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a clonal disorder of hemopoeitic stem cells, characterized by infective hematopoiesis, peripheral cytopenias along with hypercellularity of marrow and marked dysplastic features. Our aim was to study the spectrum of the WHO classification in adult Pakistani patients with MDS at disease presentation. Materials and Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted at Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College, extending from January 2010 to December 2014. Patient data were retrieved from the maintained archives. Results: Overall, 45 patients were diagnosed at our institution with de novo MDS during the study period. There were 28 males and 17 females. Age ranged between 18 and 95 years with a mean of $57.6{\pm}17.4years$. The male to female ratio was 1.7:1. According to the WHO classification, 53.3% had refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia, 22.2% had refractory cytopenia with unilineage dysplasia, 4.4% each had refractory anemia with excess of blasts-1 and II and 15.5% had MDS unclassified. The main presenting complaints were generalized fatigue (60%), fever (33.3%), dyspnea (15.5%), bleeding (13.3%) and weight loss (11.1%). Physical examination revealed pallor in 37.7%, followed by petechial and purpuric rashes in 20% of patients. Hemoglobin was <10 g/dl in 41 (91.1%). Pancytopenia and bicytopenia were noted in 18 (40%) and 14 (31.1%) respectively. Conclusions: MDS in our patients presents at a relatively young age. Refractory c ytopenia with multilineage dysplasia was the dominant disease variant in our setting.

        A Curious Case of Primary Gastric Mucosal Melanoma

        Malignant melanoma is a neoplasm of melanin-producing cells predominantly of cutaneous origin, which uncommonly develops within gut mucosa. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman with complaints of abdominal pain, loss of appetite and weight. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a gastric mass and systemic imaging demonstrated widespread nodal and bilateral adrenal gland involvement. Histopathology of the gastric mass confirmed primary malignant mucosal melanoma of the stomach. The patient received three cycles of Nivolumab but did not respond, and thus, was then offered best supportive care. Although infrequent, mucosal melanoma can arise from the gastrointestinal tract, and in contrast to the cutaneous form, advanced disease usually has a dismal prognosis and responds poorly to immune checkpoint inhibitors. Primary gastric melanoma is an aggressive disease that is diagnosed by exclusion after the differential diagnosis of metastasis from a cutaneous or unknown primary site has been conducted. If available, patients with treatment-naïve mucosal melanoma should be considered for enrollment in clinical trials.

        Discovery of Novel 1,4-Benzodioxane Containing Thiazolidinone Derivatives as Potential Antihepatotoxic Agent

        In continuance of our search for newer antihepatotoxic agents some novel thiazolidinone derivatives containing 1,4-benzodioxane ring system were synthesized starting from 2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzodioxane-2-carbohydrazide. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for antihepatotoxic activity against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Among them some compounds have shown significant antihepatotoxic activity comparable to standard drug silymarin.
