Sustainability indicators in the context of family farming: A systematic and bibliometric approach
Janaina Wohlenberg,Rosana C. S. Schneider,Michele Hoeltz 대한환경공학회 2022 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.27 No.1
Actions that promote the sustainability of small-scale agricultural activities are fundamental to maintaining the supply and diversification of products, generating income, and minimizing their environmental impact. This study aimed to identify the main economic, environmental, and social indicators used in studies focused on food production by family farming. A systematic literature review was performed in the Scopus database, where 22 original articles were identified. The largest number of publications was observed in Italy and the United States of America, followed by Brazil, India, Poland, and the United Kingdom. The main aspect observed in the publications was the interrelationship of the three spheres of sustainability, highlighting the importance of integrated monitoring. Some indicators identified were: in the economic sphere, financial planning, productivity, and profitability; in the environmental sphere, soil use and quality, water, erosion, temperature, and energy; and in the social sphere, food security, job and income generation, and government subsidies. A holistic approach to the use of monitoring indicators as a tool for sustainability is fundamental, but there are few studies that evaluate these three spheres; mainly in the field of agribusiness, due to its greater diversity of activities and aspects to be monitored.

Cervical cancer (CC) is caused by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and affects women worldwide. The progression ofan HPV persistent infection to CC is influenced by genetic factors. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TP53, NQO1 andRPS19 genes (rs1042522, rs1800566, rs2305809, respectively) were previously associated with CC in European and North Americanpopulations. The present case-control study aimed to investigate the association of the SNPs rs1042522, rs1800566, and rs2305809with CC in an admixed population in southern Brazil. A total of 435 women (106 CC patients and 329 controls) were recruited forthis study. All women were interviewed and underwent clinical sampling. SNPs rs1042522 and rs1800566 were evaluated by PCR-RFLP. SNP rs2305809 was determined by real-time PCR. The crude and adjusted ORs with 95% CI were estimated. The recessive genetic model(C/C + C/T) for rs2305809 was more frequent in the control group (79.9%) compared to the cases (69.8%), being associated withCC protection (adjustedOR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.27-0.90). However, the other polymorphisms evaluated did not present significant differencesbetween cases and controls. This study detected a protective association for the recessive genetic model in rs2305809. These resultssuggest a potential role of the RPS19 gene in CC.

A severe leaf spot, turning to foliage blight, was observed on leaves of Maranta leuconeura growing in a garden in Brazil (state of Rio de Janeiro) in 2015. A dematiaceous hyphomycete bearing a morphology typical of a helminthosporoid fungi was regularly found in association with diseased tissues. The fungus was isolated and pathogenicity was demonstrated through the completion of Koch`s postulates. A morphology and molecular analysis led to the conclusion that the fungus belonged to the genus Bipolaris, which is characterized by having fusiform conidia, externally thickened and truncate hila and a bipolar pattern of germination. Additionally, homology of internal transcribed spacer and GAPDH sequences with sequences of other Bipolaris species, confirmed its generic placement. A phylogenetic study also indicated clearly that the fungus on M. leuconeura is phylogenetically distinct from related species of this genus, leading to the proposal of the new species Bipolaris marantae.

da Conceicao, Maria Gabriela,de Andrade Ferreira, Marcelo,de Lima Silva, Janaina,Costa, Cleber Thiago Ferreira,Chagas, Juana Catarina Cariri,de Figueiredo Monteiro, Carolina Correa Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.10
Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of replacing wheat bran for cactus cladodes plus urea (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) on the intake of nutrients, nitrogen balance, microbial protein synthesis, and rumen fermentation for steers. Methods: Five crossbred steers (1/2 Holstein-Zebu), with rumen cannula and an average body weight of $180{\pm}5.3kg$, were assigned to a $5{\times}5$ Latin square design. Dietary treatments consisted of the replacement of the total of wheat bran in basal diet by cactus cladodes using the following proportions: 0% for basal diet, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% cactus cladodes replacing wheat bran. Urea was added to the diets to adjust the crude protein (CP) content to 130 g/kg dry matter. Results: Maximum dry matter intake (5.73 kg/d) and maximum nitrogen balance (103 g/d) were estimated for 54.6% and 70.8% replacement levels of wheat bran. The maximum microbial protein production (44.6 g/d) was obtained at a replacement level of 49.7%, and a medium value (125 g CP mic/kg total digestible nutrients) of microbial protein efficiency was observed. The rumen pH increased linearly according to cactus cladodes inclusion, while the ammonia nitrogen medium value was 24.5 mg/dL. Conclusion: The replacement of 55% wheat bran for cactus cladodes plus urea in the diet of crossbred steers is recommended.

Gleidiana Amelia Pontes de Almeida,Marcelo de Andrade Ferreira,Janaina de Lima Silva,Juana Catarina Cariri Chagas,Antonia Sherlanea Chaves Veras,Leonardo Jose Assis de Barros,Gledson Luiz Pontes de Al 아세아·태평양축산학회 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.3
Objective: The study aimed to evaluate sugarcane bagasse as roughage in lactating cow on feed intake, digestibility, ingestive behavior, milk production and composition, and microbial protein synthesis. Methods: Ten Girolando cows at initial body weight of 450±25.6 kg and at 143.7±30.7 days in milk were assigned in two 5×5 Latin square designs. Five 21-day experimental periods were adopted (1° to 14-day: diets adaptation period; 15° to 21-day: data collection and sampling period). The diets consisted of four different levels of sugarcane bagasse (45%, 50%, 55%, and 60%) and a control diet, commonly adopted in the region, based on spineless cactus (25% sugarcane bagasse), formulated to meet 12 kg/d milk yield. Results: The dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and total digestible nutrients intakes and DM and OM digestibilities observed for 45% and 50% bagasse inclusion were similar to control diet, while that 55% and 60% bagasse inclusion were lower. Cows fed control diet, and bagasse diets of 45%, and 50% levels had the nutritional requirements attended, that guaranteed 12 kg/d of milk yield. The crude protein intake and digestibility of cows fed 45%, 50%, and 55% of bagasse inclusion were similar to control diet. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake and digestibility differ for all bagasse diets related to control diet, while the non-fiber carbohydrates intake and digestibility for cows fed 45% of bagasse were similar for control diet. The intakes and digestibilities of nutrients decreased linearly in function of bagasse inclusion; NDF and indigestible NDF intakes did not vary. The ruminating time, feeding and rumination efficiency, microbial protein synthesis and milk yield decreased linearly with sugarcane bagasse inclusion. Conclusion: Sugarcane bagasse decreases milk production; however, its inclusion level in between 45% to 50% associated to concentrate could replace diets based on spineless cactus for crossbred dairy cow's producing 12 kg/d of milk.

Alchornea glandulosa has traditionally been used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of immune-inflammatory diseases and as an antiulcer agent to heal gastric ulcer and gastritis. Angiogenesis is a complex multistep process that consists of proliferation, migration, and anastomosis of endothelial cells and has a major role in the development of pathologic conditions, such as inflammatory diseases. To investigate a possible link between the anti-inflammatory activities and antiangiogenic effects of A. glandulosa ethyl acetate fraction (AGF), this study examined which features of the angiogenic process could be disturbed by this fraction. The antiangiogenic activity of AGF was determined in vitro by using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and capillary-like structures formation were addressed. To elucidate the mechanism of action, nuclear factor κB (NFκB), a transcription factor implicated in these processes, was also evaluated in HUVEC incubated with AGF. A significant decrease in proliferation, a relevant increase in apoptosis, and a strong reduction in invasion capacity (as assessed by bromodeoxyuridine, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase–mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling, and double-chamber assays, respectively) were observed. AGF also led to a drastic reduction in the number of capillary-like structures formed when HUVEC were cultured on growth factor–reduced Matrigel–coated plates. In addition, incubation of HUVEC with AGF resulted in reduced NFκB activity. These findings emphasize the antiangiogenic potential of AGF and support its therapeutic use for disorders that involve excessive angiogenesis, such as chronic inflammation and tumor growth.

The determination of the effectiveness of the immobilization of blasting dust (waste generated in galvanic activities) in cement matrix, as well of mechanical, physical and microstructural properties of concrete paving blocks produced with partial replacement of cement was the objective of this work. The results showed that blasting dust has high percentage of silica in the composition and very fine particle size, characteristics that qualify it for replacement of cement in manufacturing concrete blocks. The replacement of Portland cement by up to 5% residues did not cause a significant loss in compressive strength nor increase in water absorption of the blocks. Chemical tests indicated that there is no problem of leaching or solubilization of contaminants to the environment during the useful life of the concrete blocks, since the solidification/stabilization process led to the immobilization of waste in the cement mass. Therefore, the use of blasting dust in the manufacture of concrete paving blocks is promising, thus being not only an alternative for proper disposal of such waste as well as a possibility of saving raw materials used in the construction industry.

Since carotenoids are synthesized inside the cell, it is desirable to find an efficient method to extract carotegenic pigments. This study aimed at comparing the effectiveness of different chemical and mechanical techniques to disrupt the cell wall of Sporidiobolus pararoseus and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa yeasts isolated from environmental samples. Among the techniques under study, the ultrasonic bath and the abrasion with glass beads yielded the most promising results for S. pararoseus (84.8 ± 2.3 and 76.9 ± 2.1 lg/g, respectively). The ultrasonic bath yielded the highest specific concentration of carotenoids for R. mucilaginosa (193.5 ± 25.8 lg/g), while the biomass freezing process improved neither the extractability nor the specific concentration of carotenoids. Lyophilization increased the specific concentrations of carotenoids from S. pararoseus and R. mucilaginosa by 20 and 13.7%, respectively, while the freezing process did not significantly affect (p[0.05) the recovery of carotenoids from both yeasts; thus, it may be eliminated from the process.
