        Effects of L-NAME, a non-specific nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, on AlCl3-induced toxicity in the rat forebrain cortex

        The present experiments were done to determine the effectiveness of a non-specific nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), on oxidative stress parameters induced by aluminium chloride (AlCl3) intrahippocampal injections in Wistar rats. Animals were sacrificed 3 h and 30 d after treatments, heads were immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen and forebrain cortices were removed. Crude mitochondrial fraction preparations of forebrain cortices were used for the biochemical analyses: nitrite levels, superoxide production, malondialdehyde concentrations, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and reduced glutathione contents. AlCl3 injection resulted in increased nitrite concentrations, superoxide anion production, malondialdehyde concentrations and reduced glutathione contents in the forebrain cortex, suggesting that AlCl3 exposure promoted oxidative stress in this brain structure. The biochemical changes observed in neuronal tissues showed that aluminium acted as a pro-oxidant. However, the nonspecific nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, L- NAME, exerted anti-oxidant actions in AlCl3-treated animals. These results revealed that NO-mediated neurotoxicity due to intrahippocampal AlCl3 injection spread temporally and spatially to the forebrain cortex, and suggested a potentially neuroprotective effect for L-NAME.

        Antioxidant and Vasodilatory Effects of Blackberry and Grape Wines

        In contrast to the well-described various biological effects of grape wines, the potential effects of commonly consumed blackberry wine have not been studied. We examined in vitro antioxidant and vasodilatory effects of four blackberry wines and compared them with the effects of two red and two white grape wines. Although some blackberry wines had lower total phenolic content relative to the red grape wines, their antioxidant capacity was stronger, which may be related to a higher content of non-flavonoid compounds (most notably gallic acid) in blackberry wines. Although maximal vasodilation induced by blackberry wines was generally similar to that of red wines, blackberry wines were less potent vasodilators. Vasodilatory activity of all wines, in addition to their flavonoid and total phenolic content, was most significantly associated with their content of anthocyanins. No association of vasodilation with any individual polyphenolic compound was found. Our results indicate the biological potential of blackberry wines, which deserves deeper scientific attention.

        Evaluation and Treatment of Malnutrition and Associated Gastrointestinal Complications in Children with Cerebral Palsy

        The majority of children with cerebral palsy (CP) have feeding difficulties and are especially prone to malnutrition. The early involvement of a multidisciplinary team should aim to prevent malnutrition and provide adequate nutritional support. Thorough nutritional assessment, including body composition, should be a prerequisite for the nutritional intervention. As in typically-developed children nutritional support should start with dietary advice and the modification of oral feeding, if safe and acceptable. However, for prolonged feeding, in the presence of unsafe swallowing and inadequate oral intake, enteral nutrition should be promptly initiated and early gastrostomy placement should be evaluated and discussed with parents/caregivers. Gastrointestinal problems (oropharyngeal dysfunction, gastroesophageal disease, and constipation) in children with CP are frequent and should be actively detected and adequately treated as they can further worsen the feeding process and nutritional status.

        Changes in Ensembles’ Thermal Insulation According to Garment’s Fit and Length Based on Athletic Figure

        The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of design solutions on the thermal insulation of the garments and the ensembles. Previous studies investigated the microclimatic air gaps and volumes, however only under the first - and the second - layered clothing. Since none of the previous studies covered three - layered ensembles, in this study ensembles were accompanied by jackets of different fit and length to investigate the ensembles’ thermal insulation. Variants of bomber jacket differ in the amount of the ease allowance, while variants of the parka differ in length. The thermal insulation of the ensembles increased for 21.6 to 59.7 % when one of the jacket variants was added as the outerwear garment. A threshold volume, after which the thermal insulation will start to decrease due to convection, wasn’t determined for the outerwear third - layered garments nor was the impact of the length of the garment on the thermal insulation clearly stated. This study involved laboratory testing of garments and ensembles by 3D body scanning and thermal manikin measurements. To evaluate the volume of the microclimatic air volume the accurate 3D body scanning was used and the impact of the microclimatic volume on the ensemble’s insulation was tested. The thermal insulation for the selected outerwear garments and afterwards ensembles was measured by resting thermal manikin. Analysis of the results obtained from tests, showed that the garments’ fit and length can be used to model the overall thermal insulation of the ensembles. The ensembles insulation enlargement was measured for microclimatic volumes up to 33.57 dm3 (measured with ensembles accompanied with bomber jacket). The study proved that the limiting microclimatic volume is greater for three - layered clothing, than previously reported. The overall ensembles’ insulation increased simultaneously with the length enlargement (measured with ensembles accompanied with parka jacket). Findings will be of help in the future research on garments and ensembles thermal properties modelled through the design process and the construction.

        Effect of fruit host on wing morphology in Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae): A first view using geometric morphometrics

        The invasive alien fruit pest Drosophila suzukii, (Matsumura 1931) causes economic loss in soft‐skinned fruit production across Europe. After its first detection in 2008, the species has successfully expanded to a wide geographic area and invaded new host plants in a relatively short period of time. The aim of the present study was to analyze the connection between food preferences as host specialization and the morphology of D. suzukii. Population morphological variation in wings was investigated in two different host fruits (grape and strawberry) in which economic damage has been recorded. The geometric morphometric results revealed two noticeable wing shape morphotypes in D. suzukii (i.e. vein configuration) between the grape and strawberry fruits. Flies reared in grapes had wider wings, whereas flies grown in strawberries had more narrow wings. These differences in morphotype could be explained by the effects of wing aerodynamics, which affect the strength of the wings in flight. This, in turn, can lead to better dispersion within the associated fruit host. These results confirm that this extremely invasive species, found worldwide, is successful at spreading in part because of its potential to adapt rapidly under different rearing conditions. Therefore, adaptive variations in the wing shape of D. suzukii can be used to differentiate populations based on food preference (e.g. soft fruits) and can serve as an additional tool for detecting different bioecological types of D. suzukii.

        Vývoj moderní teorie terminologie a česká terminologická tradice

        Významnou součástí péče o kulturu každého spisovného jazyka je rozvoj terminologické teorie a propracovávání terminologie včetně její standardizace (normalizace). Jak jsme se v tomto příspěvku pokusili ilustrovat, tradiční (Wüsterova) teorie terminologie je v mnohém překonána, viz např. tvrzení o tom, že práce na terminologii začíná od pojmů (termín je přidělený pojmu, pojem je význam termínu) a že terminologický pohled na jazyk je synchronní (důraz na současný význam termínů a systém pojmů). Podstatné poznatky o termínech může poskytnout moderní lingvistika, nověji také informační věda a počítačová a korpusová lingvistika. Moderní terminologická kultura sleduje vedle kognitivního a lingvistického rozměru terminologie také její komunikační aspekty, a tak se nezbytným stává zkoumání terminologie v diskurzu (zejména odborném). Od dřívější idealizující tendence ve smyslu poměru jedna ku jedné mezi terminologickými a pojmovými systémy (v tradiční teorii terminologie) se přechází – zejména v socioterminologii a teorii terminologického managementu – k pojetí terminologie jako výsledku užívání v různých pragmatických situacích. Teorie terminologie se v neposlední řadě rozšiřuje o aplikování některých poznatků kognitivní a sociokognitivní vědy, opětovně dokazujících význam jazyka pro poznání a pochopení světa The theory of terminology was developed by the founder of the Vienna school, Wüster, on objectivist foundations (a term as a linguistic symbol formed by words or elements of words, the structured nature of the vocabulary) with the aim of standardising the concepts and terms. The main schools of the theory of terminology were established approximately at the same time in Vienna, Prague, and Moscow and later also in Québec. Czech terminography derives its tradition from the Prague Linguistic Circle (Havránek, Roudný, Tejnor, Kocourek), whose aim was the structural and functional description of specialised language and the standardisation of terminology by authoritative institutions. Its concept of specialised language as part of specialised communication was developed in the 1970s in connection with the communicative and pragmatic orientation of linguistics as a socioterminological trend (in France and Canada). Modern terminology moves from an onomasiological approach to a communicative one (Sager); more recently use is made of the findings of cognitive science and of language corpora for the collection of excerpts (Temmerman).

        Assessment of Knitted Fabric Smoothness and Softness Based on Paired Comparison

        The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth analysis of customer preferences for single jersey knit fabricsregarding the attributes of smoothness and softness, in order to build up a holistic picture of purchase preferences. A paired comparison test was conducted for the subjective human assessment of single jersey knitted fabrics which were designed to differ in a single factor only. A sample of 140 evaluators were recruited and assigned into seven demographic groups according to age, gender and education level, with 20 evaluators in each group. It was shown that fabrics produced of viscose and polyester or with addition of elastane yarn are perceived smoother than 100 % cotton fabrics without elastane. Regarding the gender groups, the discrepancy is seen between the results obtained for smoothness and softness, especially within the male evaluators. Also, it was shown that evaluators with completed secondary education do not make higher differences in the perception of attributes, both smoothness and softness.

        One new species and three records of cytheroid ostracods (Crustacea, Ostracoda) from Korea

        This study describes a new species of cytheroid ostracod, Paradoxostoma koreana sp. nov., collected in Korea. In addition, three other cytheroid ostracods, P. setoense Schornikov, 1975, Loxoconcha pulchra Ishizaki, 1968, and Ishizakiella miurensis (Hanai, 1957), are reported with brief descriptions and images. Paradoxostoma setoense and L. pulchra were previously only known from Japan, while I. miurensis was previously reported from Korea. Here, we describe variability in hemipenis morphology observed in the Korean population. The new species is closely related to several East Asian species, but its sister species is P. rhomboideum Okubo, 1977. The primary difference between the new species and P. rhomboideum is morphology of the distal projections of the hemipenis, but minor differences exist in the details of the cheatotaxy of other appendages.         Initial Diagnosis of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children Increases a Chance for Resolution of Symptoms

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) presented in a tertiary medical center, characteristics of patients and results of the diagnostic work-up together with an outcome during the follow up.Methods: This was a retrospective, single center, observational study including all patients who were diagnosed with FGID based on Rome III criteria from January to December 2015 in tertiary medical center. Results: Overall 294 children were included (mean age, 8.9 years [range, 1-18 years]; 165 females). Majority had functional constipation (35.4%), followed by functional abdominal pain (30.6%), irritable bowel syndrome (17.0%), functional dyspepsia (12.6%), functional nausea (3.4%) and abdominal migraine (1.0%). Regression model found that only significant factor associated with improvement of symptoms is the establishment of the functional diagnosis at the first visit (hazard ratio, 2.163; 95% confidence inverval, 1.029-4.544). There was no association between improvement of symptoms and presence of alarm signs/symptoms (weight loss, nocturnal symptoms and severe vomiting) at diagnosis. Furthermore, in pain symptoms (functional abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, dyspepsia) no treatment positively correlated with pain improvement.Conclusion: Regardless of the initial diagnosis of FGID, positive diagnosis at the first visit increases a chance for resolution of symptoms.
