      • Kinetic study on adsorption treatment of cyanide-containing wastewater using raw-synthetic zeolite via batch experiment

        ( Irwin Maulana ),( Fumitake Takahashi ) 한국폐기물자원순환학회(구 한국폐기물학회) 2016 한국폐기물자원순환학회 춘계학술발표논문집 Vol.2016 No.-

Cyanide-containing wastewater, which is commonly produced from industrial activities such as gold and silver extraction and metal plating, has been categorized as hazardous waste that should be treated properly by using any possible methods before discharging into the environment. Currently, the trend of using adsorbent materials for cyanide removal is increasing since there are many reports describe the possibility of activated carbon, modified natural zeolite, and several bio-adsorbent materials to remove cyanide [1]. This might be related with the advantages of cyanide adsorption compared with other conventional cyanide treatments. However, there is almost no paper which shows the potential of synthetic zeolite for cyanide removal process which could be the lack of knowledge in cyanide removal by adsorption method. Hence, this study has been undertaken to investigate the possible potential of raw-synthetic zeolite for cyanide removal as well as to study the adsorption kinetics of the process. A fix dose at 10g/l of ZSM-5 synthetic zeolite with SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 23 and surface area of 425 m2/g was used as the adsorbent material for cyanide uptake experiments conducted at room temperature and a constant shaking speed at 200 rpm within several variation of contact time with three different initial cyanide concentration; 50, 100, 200 mg/l (pH 10.5-11) via batch experiments. The experimental data obtained were then used for studying the kinetics of the process and modelling the adsorption behavior of the materials. Fig. 1(a) showed good cyanide adsorption ability of the raw-synthetic zeolite which is related with anion adsorption theory based on complexation mechanism [2]. The cyanide removal percentage reached almost 100% after 24 hours contacted with zeolite. While as depicted in fig. 1(b), the pseudo-first-order model has better adequacy in representing the kinetic of cyanide adsorption into the surface of the zeolite material. The linear regression in fig. 1(b) confirmed the removal of cyanide by raw-synthetic zeolite follows the model with good correlation coefficient.

The DM and the Ossi Consumer: Price Indexes during Transition

        ( Irwin L Collier ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2012 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.27 No.2

Family budget data for East and West Germany over the past decade are analyzed in the light of the convergence of relative price structures and the elimination of quantity constraints in the East during the process of eastern economic reconstruction. Exact cost-of-living indexes for generalized Cobb-Douglas preferences are calculated for the missing (index) link between the end of the old German Democratic Republic and the beginning of German economic unification. Exact deflators are provided for the period 1989 through 1998 for low to high income family budgets.

Rita Irwin 한국국제미술교육학회 2014 미술과 교육 Vol.15 No.1

Given the pedagogical turn in contemporary practice, this paper draws upon the professional practices of contemporary artists and asserts that art teacher education programs need to embrace contemporary forms of artistic inquiry in order to cultivate art educators who are inquiry-focused, community-engaged, and interdisciplinary-minded.

      • International English : Implications for Native-Speaker ESL Teachers

Michael, Irwin 서경대학교 인문과학연구소 1998 人文科學硏究 Vol.6 No.-

What is the ultimate value of an acceptance that English belongs to the world and that people besides so-called native speakers have a right to be experimental and be creative with it? Carol Renner, of the University of Regensburg, Germany, articulates this well: "Think of the so-called non-native speakers of English who contribute to the richness of the English literary tradition and who do so in part by not being bound by all the conventions that native speakers internalize from childhood: Derek Walcott, Joseph Conrad, Kazuo Ishiguro, Salman Rushdie, to name a few. "Think, too, how much more motivated, more enfranchised, and more empowered our students might feel if they thought they had a bona fide stake in the life of the language, if, rather than discouraging playfulness and experimentation and correcting their essays down to conventionality and standards of correctness, we spent more time helping them develop a sense of what works and what doesn't. "Doing so will bring us closer to the reality of an internationalized English which is much larger than any one of us can comprehend. It will also help us see that the language does not belong to any of us or even, finally, to all of us but that we belong to the language, and that each of us has rights to the language commensurate with our commitment to it."5)

        Competencies and employer engagement

Pam Irwin 서울대학교 교육연구소 2008 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.9 No.1

Using the UK experience as a template, this paper explores the concept of competencies as a viable bridge to employer engagement. In this context, the definition of competency coalesces into three primary interpretations (input, output and 'behaviour'), leading to three applications: work related skill sets, standards and professionalism. These in turn, inform intersecting relationships - the link between employer skills needs and education (work-based learning), educational and workplace competency, and quality (accreditation of employer based training, and credit accumulation and transfer systems) and vocational competency (fit for practice, and fit for purpose). For each element, relevant models and indicative practice is presented. The paper concludes by offsetting competencies with employer engagement, and offers approaches (vignettes) to actively advance this critical agenda.

        Wind-induced response of a twin-tower structure

Xie, Jiming,Irwin, Peter A. Techno-Press 2001 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.4 No.6

With a newly developed multi-force-balance system(MFB), a twin-tower structure was studied for its wind-induced responses. The MFB system allowed the twin towers, which were linked structurally, to be treated as a single structural system with its corresponding modes of vibration involving coupled motions of the two towers. The towers were also studied using a more conventional force balance approach in which each tower was treated as an isolated structure, i.e., as though no structural link existed. Comparison of the results reveals how the wind loads between the towers are redistributed through the structural links and the modal couplings. The results suggest that although the structural links usually have beneficial impacts on wind-induced response, they may also play a negative role if the frequency ratios of pair modes are near 1.0.

Varieties of (Un)sportsmanlike Conduct in the FPS Esports Genre: A Taxonomic Classification of ‘Esportsmanship’

        Anjum Naweed,Sidney V. Irwin,Michele Lastella 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2023 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.8 No.2

Much like traditional sports, esports are susceptible to unsportsmanlike behavior. The first-person shooter (FPS) genre of esports offers proxy views of the world which may promote vicarious gaming with unsportsmanlike conduct impacting spectator experiences. Determining the acceptability of different kinds of player conduct within esports, as well as discerning player actions which violate local norms, may serve to enhance our understanding of sportsmanship in esports. Using a multi method research design in the context of Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) esports, this study aimed to develop a taxonomic classification of (un)sportsmanlike player conduct in the FPS genre, recognizing its various forms. Through analysis of data from structured observations of gameplay, spectator reactions, and semi-structured interviews with players, a generic nodal hierarchical classification with broad application to the FPS genre was refined into a multi-level taxonomy of all forms of sportsmanship in CS:GO. The results highlighted a degree of complexity in the interpretation of sportsmanship in local esport gaming contexts that set it far enough apart from traditional sports to potentially paint a specific picture of ‘esportsmanship.’ The classification is envisaged to enhance our understanding of the sportsmanship in the FPS genre of esports, and guide the thinking of researchers, designers, and testers.

The Unification Bonus (Malus) of East Germans after the Fall of the Berlin Wall

( Mi Riam Beblo ),( Irwin L Collier ),( Tho Mas Knaus ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2012 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.27 No.2

This paper presents estimates of the unification bonus for East Germans over the period 1991 to 1998. The unification bonus is defined as the discounted value of the difference between a person`s actual income and his or her counterfactual real income stream forecast for a hypothetical continuation of economic life in a static GDR. Our central result is that nineteen percent of East Germans received a present value malus and so can be regarded as unification losers but that the aggregate bonus is ten times the size of the aggregate malus of the sample over this period.
