Antioxidant Activities of Fractions from Sedum sarmentosum

This study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity of each fraction from Sedum sarmentosum. Antioxidant activity of each fraction was measured using the DPPH radical assay, the ferric thiocyanate (FTC) method, and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method. The antioxidant activities were then compared with that of BHT (synthetic antioxidant). The ethyl acetate and butanol fractions were found to have significant DPPH radical scavenging activity, with scavenging potencies showing 90.61% and 87.02%, respectively. Total phenolic compound contents, determined according to the Folin-Denis method, were found to be in the order of ethyl acetate>butanol>ethanol>chloroform>aqueous fraction. From the results, we have been able to establish a positive correlation between the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic compound content of the sample. The antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid system was measured using the ferric thiocyanate (FTC) method and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method. The ethyl acetate fraction had the highest antioxidant activity among the tested fractions. On the basis of these results, the ethyl acetate fraction provided equivalent or higher antioxidant activity as compared to BHT. These results suggest that Sedum sarmentosum is a potentially useful antioxidant for foods, cosmetics, and medicine.
The Status of E-learning in Elementary-Secondary Education in Korea

This paper reviews the history of E-learning policies, current status, and finally the representative cases in a sequence. Korea made national master plans to be “the most wired nation in the world.” One of the national plans, Comprehensive Plan for ICT in Education (CPIE), began in 1997 as the corner stone of E-learning. The initial stage of the CPIE (1997-2000), focused on ICT infrastructure and ICT literacy set-up, supplying every school classroom with access to Internet service. The second stage with CPIE(II) (2001-2005), has turned its emphasis to the integrated use of ICT in curriculum and information distribution and teachers’ training. CPIE(), now under design, aims at fundamental change in school education, ushering in an ‘E-learning era.’ The focus of ICT policies for infrastructure in school education has changed. At the beginning the one computer for one teacher or for one classroom was the goal of the policy. However, over time, integrated use of ICT in curriculum has been more focused. Digital contents development and distribution of the public sector from the late 1990s up until now entered into three critical phases: (1) content development- enriching ICT multimedia contents for education, (2) sharingcollecting and distributing contents based on (3) the quality control-reviewing and screening of collected data. In terms of the professional development of teachers, Korean government set up life cycle for professional development for teachers such as (1) standards and models set-up, (2) training programs delivery, and (3) best practices distribution, and followed the cycle. In addition this article described several examples of E-learning in Korea such as Eductional TV programs for the college scholastic ability test, Cyber home learning networks, and Cyber high school.

Deoxynucleoside kinases exist as heterodimeric pairs specific for deoxyadenosine/deoxyguanosine kinase (dAK/dGK) and deoxyadenosine/deoxycytidine kinase (dAK/dCK). The aspartic acid-84 in dGK was mutated to alanine, asparagine and glutamic acid by site-directed mutagenesis. The mutation resulted in a drastic decrease in dGK activity compared to the unmodified cloned enzyme while it increased production of dAK activity. The mutated dak/dgk genes, which synthesize tandem deoxyadenosine/deoxyguanosine kinase, were inserted back to the Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lacto-coccus lactis by electroporation to determine the effect of site-directed mutation of the enzymes on the microbial growth. However, no significant change was observed in cell growth and lactic acid production between wild type and mutant lactic acid bacteria.

In 1904, Jack London visited the Kingdom of Joseon to investigate the Russo-Japanese War. As a war correspondent whose main mission was to observe the vivid reality of military scenes in the Far East, London was at first illusioned to create a standard reportage for his American audiences at home. While traveling around all parts of Joseon for five months, however, he was slowly disillusioned by Japanese militants that censored out his reportage and camera. In particular, he was chronically annoyed by Korean subjects and their cultural practices as they were the entity of impotence ahead of impending imperial powers. Scholars have investigated his war writings on Korea from the perspectives of biography and Orientalism because London did present superior airs against Korean subjects. Yet, these biography and Orientalism studies do not fully explain the ways that London pronounced Koreans as “disabled” or “ineffective” subjects in many parts of his narrative. In order to understand the peculiar tone he sustained in his war/travel narrative, I argue that studying discourses on disability and capitalism (along with social Darwinism, whiteness, and imperialism) is important, as London was largely part of the complex society in which these ideological discourses, in spite of their apparent contradiction, were circulated together in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Novel Assay Method for Thrombin by Weighing Fibrin Clot

본 연구는 피브린의 무게를 측정하는 방법에 의하여 간단하고 단순하게 트롬빈활성을 측정하는 방법을 확립하기 위하여 수행되었다. 이 새로운 트롬빈측정 법은 트롬빈이 기질인 피브리노겐과 반응 후 생성된 피브린의 무게를 측정한다. 피브린의 생성은 사용한 트롬빈의 효소활성, 반응온도, 반응시간 및 원심분리의 시간에 의존하였다. 피브린의 생성은 37$^{\circ}C$에서 트롬빈활성이 1.0 unit/ml 이내, 4.0mg/ml의 피브리노겐 농도 및 반응시간이 5분 이내에는 직선적으로 증가하였다. 그리고 생성된 피브린은 3,000$\times$g에서 5분간 원심분리의 경우에 안정하였다. 이 새로운 피브린 측정 법은 트롬빈을 저해하는 천연물질을 탐색하는데 유행하게 사용될 것으로 기대된다. This study was performed to establish a simple and rapid method for measuring thrombin activity based on weight of fibrin clot formed. The new method was based on the weight measurement of fibrin clot after enzymatic reaction of thrombin with fibrinogen. The fibrin formation depended upon the activities of thrombin used, temperature, incubation time, and centrifugation time. The fibrin formation was increased proportionally up to 1.0 unit/ml of thrombin activity, 4.0mg/ml of fibrinogen concentration, and 5 min of incubation time at 37$^{\circ}C$. The fibrin clot formed was stable by centrifugation at 3,000$\times$g for 5min. This simple assay based on weight of fibrin after centrifugation would be useful for identifying natural food anticoagulants by inhibiting thrombin.

일반적으로 프로그램은 반복적 메모리 참조 특성을 가진다. 본 논문에서는 이 특성을 이용하여 페이지 반입 지연 시간을 줄일 수 있는 선반입 전략과 그 타당성을 제시하였다. 특정한 페이지에 대한 부재가 재발할 경우 과거에 그 페이지에 이어 반입이 요구되었던 페이지를 미리 반입시킨다. 유휴 페이지 프레임의 약 1%-2% 정도를 페이지 부재 정보 및 선반입 버퍼로 할당하여 50% 정도의 높은 선반입 적중률을 얻을 수 있었고, 그 결과 약 20% 정도의 페이지 반입 지연 시간 감소 효과를 얻었다. 이 기법은 모든 요구 페이징 시스템에 적용 가능하며, 특히 행렬 곱셈과 같은 대규모 벡터 처리 응용의 성능 개선에 도움이 될 것이다. Most programs exhibit repeated memory access patterns. Assuming such memory access patterns, we propose a page prefetching mechanism to reduce page-in delay time. We gather page fault information into history buffer at run time. In case that a given page has been faulted more than once, pager prefetches the next page faulted following that page in the past. Using only 1%-2% of total free page frames for page fault history buffers and prefetch buffers, we observed high prefetch hit-ratio of about 50% among all page faults. This historical page prefetching reduces page-in delay by about 20%. This mechanism may be useful in demand-paging systems, especially for large vector applications such as matrix multiplications.
User command acquisition based IoT automatic control system

<P><p>Recently, researches are being conducted to build a smart environment using various sensors and devices and to provide customized services to users through IoT (Internet of Things). The existing IoT system operates the device only by using the threshold value. So, there are problems that device operates when a service that does not consider a user characteristic is provided or when user not necessary. In this paper, to solve these problems, the system collects the remote control commands and compares it with the value of device operation threshold and sets the changed threshold value. In addition, devices not registered in the server constitute the environment by linking with existing task. Therefore, it is possible to provide a customized service to the users.</p></P>
