Analysis of Designation and Symbolic Meanings of Floral Emblems in South Korea as Elements of Garden Tourism and Design

Vol.23 No.1

This study was conducted to analyze the current state and symbolic meanings of floral emblem designation in local governments of South Korea. The scope of local governments subject to analysis was limited to special city, metropolitan city, province, self-governing province, city, self-governing city, county and district based on their administrative divisions. The floral emblems of local governments and their symbolic meanings as of 2019 were examined. A total of 44 plant species were designated as floral emblems. Many plant species with high designation frequency were included in Rhododendron spp., Rosa spp., Camellia spp., Magnolia spp., and Prunus spp.. Plant species with higher designation frequency tended to have more symbolic meanings. A total of 155 terms were used for the symbolic meanings assigned to all the designated floral emblems. The major symbolic meanings were relevant to material affluence or economic growth, community spirit, and personality generally required from local residents. Most of the plant species linked to the top 10 most frequently assigned terms in symbolic meaning were those of the top 10 most frequently designated floral emblems. In the case of floral emblems with high designation frequency, it was shown that they were linked with various symbolic meanings in order to grant identity with regional distinctiveness and differentiation, regardless of the symbolic meaning that the designated flowers generally have. However, the floral emblems with low designation frequency seem to have relatively strong physical or emotional relevance with local governments and thus are expected to have high utilization in regional branding and tourism marketing.

Vol.18 No.5

This study as a part of an extensive green roof system development was carried out to assess the heat tolerance of 11 species Sedum spp. on the extensive green roof system: S. kamtschaticum, S. oryzifolium, S. polystichoides, S. sarmentosum, S. acre, S. album, S. reflexum, S. rupestre, S. sexangulare, S. spurium, and S. telephium. Electrolyte leakage evaluation was used to estimate the heat tolerance level of each Sedum at 40°C, 45°C, 47.5°C, 50°C, 52.5°C, 55°C, and 57.5°C. The critical temperatures at the midpoints of sigmoidal curves fitted through electrolyte leakage (EL) were predicted with the range of 54.0°C to 65.2°C. S. album, S. telephium, and S. sexangulare were more tolerant of high temperature than the others. In field condition, the heat tolerance of 11 species Sedum spp. applied to the suggested extensive green roof system was also estimated by EL evaluation. The EL (%) values of 11 species Sedum spp. subjected to maximum temperature (46.7°C) recorded during the experimental periods were lower than 50% except S. kamtschaticum and S. spurium. Especially, S. album, S. rupestre, and S. telephium were ranked higher than the others in heat tolerance. The most Sedum spp. would show good heat tolerance on the extensive green roof system if the maximum temperature on rooftop was below 50°C in summer season.

        김인혜(Inhea Kim),허근영(Keun Young Huh),정현종(Hyun Jong Jung),최수민(Su Min Choi),박재현(Jae Hyoen Park) 한국원예학회 2014 원예과학기술지 Vol.32 No.2

This study was carried out to develop a simple, rapid and reliable assessment model to predict cold tolerance in Pittosporum tobira, a broad-leaved evergreen commonly used in the southern region of South Korea, which can minimize the possible experimental errors appeared in a electrolyte leakage test for cold tolerance assessment. The modeling procedure comprised of regrowth test and a electrolyte leakage test on the plants exposed to low temperature treatments. The lethal temperatures estimated from the methodological combinations of a electrolyte leakage test including tissue sampling, temperature treatment for potential electrical conductivity, and statistical analysis were compared to the results of the regrowth test. The highest temperature showing the survival rate lower than 50% obtained from the regrowth test was -10°C and the lethal was -10°C~-5°C. Based on the results of the regrowth test, several methodological combinations of electrolyte leakage tests were evaluated and the electrolyte leakage lethal temperatures estimated using leaf sample tissue and freeze-killing method were closest to the regrowth lethal temperature. Evaluating statistical analysis models, linear interpolation had a higher tendency to overestimate the cold tolerance than non-linear regression. Consequently, the optimal model for cold tolerance assessment of P. tobira is composed of evaluating electrolyte leakage from leaf sample tissue applying freeze-killing method for potential electrical conductivity and predicting lethal temperature through non-linear regression analysis.

        Keun Young Huh(Keun Young Huh),Hyuncheol Heo(Hyuncheol Heo),Hyunjong Jung(Hyunjong Jung),Inhea Kim(Inhea Kim) 인간식물환경학회 2022 인간식물환경학회지 Vol.25 No.5

Background and objective: This study was conducted to analyze users’ behavior, recognition, and satisfaction toward forest trails and exercise facilities in urban mountainous forests, Jinju City, South Korea. Methods: Users’ characteristics, visit motives, and satisfaction with forest trails and exercise facilities in three urban mountainous forests were surveyed from September to October 2020. The data of 300 respondents were analyzed using frequency, descriptive, and regression analysis. Results: There was a high percentage of users aged 51 or older (62.0%). Most users visited regardless of weekdays or weekends, every day or 2-3 times a week, and stayed for 1-2 hours. Most were using the forest trails and outdoor fitness facilities. Hiking or walking showed the highest frequency in visit motives, followed by using outdoor fitness facilities. Overall satisfaction with forest trails was high at 3.74-3.93 on a 5-point Likert scale, which was affected by the landscape and environment of small private arable lands around forest trails and convenient facilities such as handrails and information boards. Overall satisfaction with outdoor fitness facilities was 3.34-3.62, which was affected by harmony with forest landscape and facility maintenance. Overall satisfaction with indoor badminton courts was 3.01-3.08, which was affected by harmony with forest landscape. Conclusion: For improving overall satisfaction, it is crucial to maintain and repair the width and surface of forest trails, but renovating the landscape and environment of small private arable lands and exercise facilities may be more critical. It is desirable to improve and maintain the function and landscape of outdoor fitness facilities and to relocate indoor badminton courts to the outskirts or boundaries of the mountainous forests. To provide various leisure and recreation activities, the creation of a forest bathing place will be first necessary, followed by a family recreation place and outdoor learning classroom.

Recognition Assessment and Structural Equation Model of Participants after Learning Floral Design Courses as Vocational Education

Vol.21 No.4

Despite the number of vocational programs for florists, florists are still considered to be hobbyists rather than specialized professionals in horticulture. The lack of a practical, unified vocational education system prevents the field from being specialized. The purpose of this study is to assess the participants recognition and analyze the structural equation model (SEM) of floral design courses to improve the direction of floral design education. Participants, the majority of whom were women in their 40s and 50s, filled out questionnaires regarding their experience with vocational education programs. Collected data showed high satisfaction with education, intent to persist in education, and attitude towards education. In the SEM analysis, the education satisfaction of participants improved as they increased their understanding of horticulture and aesthetics, learned specialized job skills, and obtained helpful certificates. The intent to persist in education is improved as the education satisfaction is improved. In addition, as the education satisfaction and intent to persist in education continue to improve, the attitude towards education becomes stronger, directly or indirectly. Thus, it is necessary to enhance technical education and aesthetics to improve the satisfaction, intent to persist, and attitude. Also horticultural therapy, producing wedding, funeral arrangements, etc., and flower/garden culture education need to be added to the education contents for expanding the scope of business.

      • The RNA Polymerase II C-terminal Domain-interacting Domain of Yeast Nrd1 Contributes to the Choice of Termination Pathway and Couples to RNA Processing by the Nuclear Exosome

        Heo, Dong-hyuk,Yoo, Inhea,Kong, Jiwon,Lidschreiber, Michael,Mayer, Andreas,Choi, Byung-Yi,Hahn, Yoonsoo,Cramer, Patrick,Buratowski, Stephen,Kim, Minkyu American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Bi 2013 The Journal of biological chemistry Vol.288 No.51

<P>The RNA polymerase II (RNApII) C-terminal domain (CTD)-interacting domain (CID) proteins are involved in two distinct RNApII termination pathways and recognize different phosphorylated forms of CTD. To investigate the role of differential CTD-CID interactions in the choice of termination pathway, we altered the CTD-binding specificity of Nrd1 by domain swapping. Nrd1 with the CID from Rtt103 (Nrd1(CIDRtt103)) causes read-through transcription at many genes, but can also trigger termination where multiple Nrd1/Nab3-binding sites and the Ser(P)-2 CTD co-exist. Therefore, CTD-CID interactions target specific termination complexes to help choose an RNApII termination pathway. Interactions of Nrd1 with both CTD and nascent transcripts contribute to efficient termination by the Nrd1 complex. Surprisingly, replacing the Nrd1 CID with that from Rtt103 reduces binding to Rrp6/Trf4, and RNA transcripts terminated by Nrd1(CIDRtt103) are predominantly processed by core exosome. Thus, the Nrd1 CID couples Ser(P)-5 CTD not only to termination, but also to RNA processing by the nuclear exosome.</P>
