This paper studies an efficient procedure for the outlier detection and variable selection problem in linear regression. The effect of outliers is added in linear regression as a mean shift parameter, nonzero or zero constant. To t this mean shift model, most penalized regressions have used some adaptive penalties on the parameters to shrink most of the parameters to zero. Such penalized models do select the true variables well, but do not detect the outliers correctly. To overcome this problem, we first determine a group of possibly suspected outliers using difference-based regression model (DBRM) and add the group to the linear model as the parameters of the effect of each suspected outlier. Then, we perform outlier detection and variable selection simultaneously using Lasso regression or Elastic net regression for the linear regression with the effect term of each suspected outlier added. The proposed method is more efficient than the previous penalized regression. We compare the proposed procedure with other methods using a simulation study and apply this procedure to the real data.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Complementary and alternative medicines can be used to alleviate climacteric symptoms that significantly affect the quality of life of postmenopausal women. Isoflavones are the most common plant-based therapies for postmenopausal changes, but the results of previous studies have been controversial. MATERIALS/METHODS: To investigate whether isoflavones would affect menopausal symptoms as well as ovarian hormones, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. The PubMed and EMBASE databases were used to perform the systematic search. Included studies were limited to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of isoflavone supplementation on menopausal symptoms. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included for the final quantitative assessment. Isoflavone intervention was varied between 49.3 and 135 mg of isoflavones per day for 12 wk-2 yrs. The meta-analysis showed that supplementation of isoflavones significantly increased the estradiol levels (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.615, P = 0.035) and Kupperman index (SMD = 3.121, P = 0.003) but had no significant effect on hot flashes, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. However, both estradiol and the Kupperman index showed significant heterogeneity among studies (I² = 94.7%, P < 0.001 and I² = 98.1%, P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Although the results showed a significant SMD in estradiol and the Kupperman index, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the high heterogeneity. Further validation with a larger RCT will be necessary. Overall, isoflavone supplementation has distinct effects on the climacteric symptoms and hormonal changes in postmenopausal women.

조인혜(Inhae Jo),김민정(Minjeong Kim) 한국문화융합학회 2023 문화와 융합 Vol.45 No.12
This study developed a program to improve creative and convergent career capabilities using job experience facility, which is an active career education method, and investigated whether the program affects learners' satisfaction and creative·convergent career competency(creative and convergent thinking skills about the profession and career perception). For the vocational experience program, the ADDIE instructional design model and problem-oriented learning instructional design strategy were applied to develop vocational experience pre and post professional programs for elementary school students. After that, the program was conducted to 3rd and 4th graders, satisfaction was investigated, and creative·convergent career competency evaluation sheets were reorganized and evaluated according to the target. As a result, there was no statistically significant difference in program satisfaction, but there was a significant difference in creative and convergent thinking skills and career perception for jobs, which had a positive effect on satisfaction and creative and convergent career competency.

The e-VGT (electrical Variable Geometry Turbocharger), a kind of turbocharger is a electronic device that controls the flow rate and amount of exhaust gas. Therefore, the position of the actuator must be controlled quickly and accurately. To control the position of the e-actuator, the authors use PI control on a position controller including a current controller. However, since the e-actuator has big friction and spring force, a general PI controller isn’t suitable for the e-actuator. To solve the problem, they find mechanical modeling of the e-actuator. And using the mechanical modeling, the controller that is suitable for the e-actuator is made.

<▼1>
The modular architecture of protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks is evident in diverse species with a wide range of complexity. However, the molecular components that lead to the evolution of modularity in PPI networks have not been clearly identified. Here, we show that weak domain-linear motif interactions (DLIs) are more likely to connect different biological modules than strong domain-domain interactions (DDIs). This molecular division of labor is essential for the evolution of modularity in the complex PPI networks of diverse eukaryotic species. In particular, DLIs may compensate for the reduction in module boundaries that originate from increased connections between different modules in complex PPI networks. In addition, we show that the identification of biological modules can be greatly improved by including molecular characteristics of protein interactions. Our findings suggest that transient interactions have played a unique role in shaping the architecture and modularity of biological networks over the course of evolution.
</▼1><▼2>
Author Summary

Modular architecture is important for the evolution of cellular systems. Modular rearrangements facilitate functional innovations and modular insulations provide robustness to perturbations. However, molecular-level understanding of the mechanisms underlying modular network evolution is currently not well understood. Here we show that strong domain-domain interactions (DDIs) and weak domain-linear motif interactions (DLIs) made different contributions to the evolution of the modular architecture of PPI networks. Especially, DLIs mediate between-module interactions, and that their relative abundance has dramatically increased in metazoan species. Linear motifs have been identified as evolutionary interaction switches since subtle amino acid changes can cause the short sequences in linear motifs to appear and disappear. Our results suggest that subtle changes in linear motifs have contributed to the rewiring of functional modules and, consequently, to functional innovations in metazoan species.
</▼2>
Image retrieval using BIM and features from pretrained VGG network for indoor localization
Ha, Inhae,Kim, Hongjo,Park, Somin,Kim, Hyoungkwan Elsevier 2018 Building and Environment Vol.140 No.-

Abstract

Various devices that are used indoors require information regarding the user's position and orientation. This information enables the devices to offer the user customized and more relevant information. This study presents a new image-based indoor localization method using building information modeling (BIM) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This method constructs a dataset with rendered BIM images and searches the dataset for images most similar to indoor photographs, thereby estimating the indoor position and orientation of the photograph. A pretrained CNN (the VGG network) is used for image feature extraction for the similarity evaluation of two different types of images (BIM rendered and real images). Experiments were performed in real buildings to verify the method, and the matching accuracy is 91.61% for a total of 143 images. The results also confirm that pooling layer 4 in the VGG network is best suited for feature selection.

Highlights

A method utilizing CNN and BIM for image-based indoor localization is proposed.

The image most similar to the photo is retrieved from the dataset built from BIM.

Features are extracted by the VGG for evaluating similarity between images.

The most suitable layer in the VGG for cross-domain image retrieval is identified.

A high performance in the experiment verified the proposed method.
