        Mora Assignment and Vowel Shortening

        Sohn, Hyang-Sook. 1997. Mora Assignment and Vowel Shortening. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 5, 119-139. The purpose of this paper is to provide a moraic analysis of vowel shortening in the Kyungsang dialect, with crucial reference to the syllable weight. This paper argues for a moraic representation in which sonorants are assigned the mora in the coda position whereas obstruents are not. Vowel shortening, then, is equivalent to the loss of a corresponding mora when the mora-bearing unit is resyllabified. This explains why vowel shortening is restricted to the stems ending with sonorant. The shortening contrast in the stems ending with consonant clusters is also examined on the basis of two factors: prosodic licensing of the stem-final segment and its moraic nature. The contrast in coronal vs. noncoronal obstruents suggests that sonority hierarchy be further refined to reflect their different moraicity.

        카프카와 코란 사이에서 - 나비드 케르마니의 문화 번역

        본 연구는 나비드 케르마니의 『코란과 카프카 사이에서』에 나타난 글쓰기의 특징을 문화 번역이라는 개념을 통해 살펴본다. 그는 자신이 속한 두 세계의 핵심을 ‘코란’과 ‘카프카’로 코드화하는데, 이 때 독일 문학에 대한 체험과 이슬람에 대한 관심은 서로 갈등 관계가 아니라, 서로를 촉진하고 강화하는 방식으로 얽혀 있다. 케르마니에게 ‘카프카’는 독일 문학의 대표적 작가이면서 여러 문화 전통에 속해 있다. 그밖에도 그가 주목하는 것은 민족이나 국가라는 정체성에 대해 거리를 둔, 독일에 대해 누구보다도 비판적이고 코즈모폴리턴적인 계열의 작가들이다. 그는 이러한 특성이야말로 독일 문학의 고유함이며, 다양한 문화에 속한 작가들이 독일 문화를 풍요롭게 했다고 본다. 현대 페르시아 문학을 대표하는 작가이며 케르마니가 카프카와의 친연성 속에서 묘사하는 사데크 헤다야트 역시 이슬람과 현대 이란의 민족주의에 비판적이고 어느 진영에도 속하지 않은 아웃사이더였으며, 유럽 문화와의 교류 속에서 현대 페르시아 산문을 만들어 내었다. 다른 한편 케르마니는 코란의 미학적 측면과 해석의 다양성을 강조하며 이슬람, 아랍 문화와 무슬림의 ‘다른’ 이미지들을 제시한다. 케르마니는 독일·유럽 문화와 페르시아·아랍 문화라는 서로 다른 문화를 가로지르며 이 문화들 자체가 이미 혼종적이고 복수적임을, 그리고 여러 문화들의 교차와 엮임을 통해 어떻게 새로운 것이 만들어지는지를 보여 준다. 이때 그는 이 문화들의 전통과 그에 대한 자신의 이중 귀속성을 긍정하며, 유럽의 독자들을 위해 낯선 문화들을 번역할 뿐만 아니라 그들 자신의 문화도 새롭게 조명한다. 그래서 본 연구에서는 그의 문화적 실천의 특징을 잠정적으로 “환대의 문화 번역”이라고 부른다. Die vorliegende Studie verfolgt das Ziel, die Charakteristik des Schreibens in Navid Kermanis Zwischen Koran und Kafka mithilfe des Begriffes „kulturelle Übersetzung“ zu beleuchten. Navid Kermani kodifiziert den Kern der zwei Welten, denen er zugehört, als „Koran“ und „Kafka“. Dabei stehen seine Erlebnisse mit der deutschen Literatur und sein Interesse am Islam nicht in Konflikt, sondern sind verflochten und befördern einander. Für ihn repräsentiert der Autor Kafka die deutsche Literatur, während er gleichzeitig zu mehreren kulturellen Traditionen gehört. Weitere Schritsteller, die Kermani betrachtet, sind meistens Dissidenten und kosmopolitische Autoren, die sich kritisch mit Fragen der Identität auseinandersetzen und dabei besonders der Rolle von Konzepten wie ‚Staat‘ und ‚Nation‘ distanziert gegenüberstehen. Kermani sieht in dieser Traditionslinie die Spezifika der „deutschen“ Literatur, die seines Erachtens die „deutsche“ Kultur bereichert haben. Sadeq Hedayat, ein repräsentativer Autor der modernen persischen Literatur, den Kermani mit Kafka in Verbindung bringt, war ebenfalls ein Dissident, der dem Islam und dem Nationalismus der modernen Gesellschaft Irans gegenüber kritisch war und zwischen den Stühlen saß. Er hat auch im Austausch mit der europäischen Kultur moderne Prosa auf Persisch erschaffen. Darüber hinaus betont Navid Kermani die ästhetischen Aspekte des Korans und den Facettenreichtum der Auslegungen des Korans als ein literarischen Textes: eine hermeneutische Praxis, die zum Grundprinzip der traditionellen Islamwissenschaften gehört. Dadurch liefert er für die europäische Leserschaft „anderen“ Bilder des Islams, der arabischen Kultur sowie muslimischen Lebens. Während Navid Kermani die Grenzen verschiedener Kulturen überschreitet, zeigt er auf, dass Kulturen immer schon hybrid und im Plural existieren, und illustriert, wie durch ihre Überschneidungen und Verflechtungen etwas Neues geschaffen wird. Dabei bejaht er die Doppelzugehörigkeit seines Daseins und die Traditionen beider Kulturen, während er für die europäische Leserschaft nicht nur die fremde Kultur übersetzt und zugänglich macht, sondern auch ihre eigene Kultur neu beleuchtet. Aus diesen Gründen will die vorliegende Studie die Spezifika seiner kulturellen Praktiken vorläufig als „die kulturelle Übersetzung der Hospitalität“ bezeichnen.

        김채원의 〈겨울의 환〉에 나타난 문학치료적 성격 분석

        This article redefines the significance of motherhood expressed in Kim Ch’ae-Wǒn’s novel entitled Kyǒul ǔi hwan , which represents motherhood as a force of vitality, transcendence, and spirituality. By employing the bibliotherapic approach toward literature, I observed that the literary representation of motherhood is connected to heal human wounds. The contemporary society prevails with the mental and psychological problems, as epitomized in the concept of “fatigue society” in Han Byǒng-Ch’ǒl’s writing. Han argues for the positive side of the “fatigue society” in which people focus on deliberation and contemplation. Such pursuit of the contemplative life is suggested in Illusion of winter. Specifically, this article focuses on the expression of motherhood as an instrument of healing, and I concentrate on the two particular scenes concerning the representation of motherhood: The mother who prepares a meal and sets the table, and the mother patiently waits for her family at the door. Specifically, the mother’s preparation of food symbolizes the vitality of life, while her waiting at the door captures the transcendental personality or spirituality of the mother character. Such portrayals serve to wrap and heal the wounds and scars, since motherhood occupies the inherent and sacred realm of humanity, where pain can never reach. The vitality and spiritual nature of life and nourishment in the Illusion of winter therefore suggests its significance in modern society. Conclusively, this study illuminates the literary representation of motherhood as a site of healing.

        (번역)『박통사』(상)의 난해어

        This article aims lexicologically to research difficulty words which we could not understand the meaning of declinable words in the (Beonyeok)Baktongsa(朴通事) volume one. By this research, we find out meaning of several verbal words, as follows "japsoeu-[잡소으-](lesson 1 ), hyang-nario-[향나리오-](lesson 2), bopnol-[봅놀-](lesson 19), al-[알-](lesson 26), gatalh?-[가탈하-](lesson 33), and also uncovered meanings of abjective words like s?m?itgap-[사밋갑-](lesson 6), s?lgap-[살갑-](lesson 6), p?n[펀](lesson 13) etc.. This thesis present the reason why gatalh?-[가탈하-] means ‘totter’, ‘stagger’ and ‘stagger’. And also it was a significant research which find out ‘s?m?itgap-[사밋갑]-’ means ‘considerate(생각이) 깊-’ and the word of p?n[펀]means ‘p?l-[펄-]’ as meaning of ‘bluish green’. In fact, it was the controversialword. There were controversies in interpreting the meaning of these words.Of course still there were lots of unsolved words in (Beonyeok)Baktongsa(朴通事), those are wait for in-depth research.

      • 대학생의 자기 효능감과 진로 의사 결정 유형과의 관계

        The major purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether differential levels of self-efficacy would be associated with the types of career decision-making. The subjects were 276 students(129 males, 154 females: 122 sophomores, 82 juniors, 75 seniors) in Yong In university. The instruments used for this investigation were 'Self-Efficacy Scale(Kim, A-Young, 1997)' and 'Assessment of Career Decision-Making(Koh, Hyang-Ja,1992)'. Data was analyzed by t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients. The findings were as follows. First, there were significant positive correlations among three factors of self- efficacy(self confidence, self regulation, and preference of task difficulty) and rational decision- making type. And there were negative correlations among three factors of self-efficacy and dependent decision-making types. Second, sex differences were found in three factors of self-efficacy and dependent decision-making type. Third, there were significant differences in self-efficacy and rational decision- making type in accordance with the career preparation behavior.

        샐러드 드레싱에 대한 소비자의 기호도와 이용 실태 조사 연구 : 대구지역을 중심으로

        This study was conducted to evaluate the consumers' preferences and perceptions on the salad and its dressings, via a total of 401 subjects in the Taegu area on the basis of 5-point Likert scale. Anthropometric data included the total subjects consisted of 66 females and 335 males: categorized by age, 20's (103), 30's (135). 40's (83), over 50's (80). The average size of family was 4.2 persons. According to BMI, 64.8% of the subjects belonged to the normal group. The age group that liked salad most was the 20's group, which was also the group that ate salad most frequently. The salad was perceived as food item which is convenient to eat(3.83), healthy(3.63), easy to prepare(3.63) and delicious(3.61) but rarely as a expensive item(2.44). The ingredients, used for salad preparation included fruits and vegetables (3.19) such as tomato and cucumber, Among the salad dressings, the fruit dressing was preferred the most(4.59), while the mayonnaise the least(3.59). The mayonnaise was perceived as an item with highest calories(4.1). and hardly perceived as a luxury item(2.78). The preference for the fruits dressing was highly correlated with the degree of education (p<0.05), age(p<0.001) and BMI(p<0.001). The higher the degree of education, the lower the level of age group, and the lower the BMI, the higher preference for the fruit salad dressing was demonstrated.

      • 댄스스포츠프로그램 참가동반자에 따른 여가인지에 관한 연구

        The goal of this study was to define a study on the leisure perception in accordance attendees' partners in DanceSport programs. For this study, research was carried out for 3 months from September to December in 2003. The object groups were from people who attended dance programs in Chuncheon, Wonju, and Ghangneung of Gangwon province. Samplings were extracted using Stratified Cluster Random Sampling in consideration of population statistics factors. As a process of sampling, 15 sampling frameworks-5each from people who enrolled in dance programs at community centers and women's centers in Chuncheon, Wonju, and Gangneung - were randomly taken. A research paper was used for data collection. It is based on the LDB (Leisure Diagnostic Battery 1987) developed by Witt & Ellis Won Hyung Joong translated and standardized this form in 1989. The research form that is used for this study was modified again by Hwang Hyang Hee in 2003. This leisure perception scale consists of 18 questionnaires and is categorized into 4 sections about self-esteem, desire for leisure, control, and concentration level. The trust variable of the research is Cronbach' a=.9094~.9514 and is a very trustful figure for verification. The responses were grouped into 5 scales, from the scale number I "not at all" to the scale number 5 "Yes, very much". The analysis reveals that the higher the sum of numbers is the higher the leisure perception. (I dont understand this exactly) Only 286 research response papers out of 320 people were applied since irrelevant answers were deleted. For deriving the conclusion, Technical statistical analysis, ANCOVA, and Post-hoc by Scheffe's method were applied. The conclusions about the relevance between leisure perception and attendees' partners in dance programs of local cities are listed below. First, desire for leisure differs depending on who the attendee's dancing partner is. The desire is high when the attendee had his/her spouse or child as a dancing partner. Second, Self-esteem for leisure is also high when the attendee had his/her spouse as a dancing partner. Third, there was a difference in leisure control depending on who the partner is. Leisure control was very high when the attendee's spouse was a dancing partner. Fourth, concentration is stronger in other cases when the child of the attendee was a dancing partner. From this conclusion we can observe that desire for leisure, self-esteem for leisure, leisure control, and concentration level is high when attendees had their spouses as dancing partners. Therefore, considering attendees' partners is crucial when developing programs for a local-city dance sports program.

        The Output-to-Output Weight-Identity Constraint in the Forms Related by Optional Rules

        No-Ju Kim & Hyang-Sook Sohn. 1999. The Output-to-Output Weight-Identity Constraint in the Forms Related by Optional Rules. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 5.2, 323-336. This paper shows that compensatory lengthening occurs in Korean only in the forms related by optional phonological or morphological rules. This peculiarity is explained within the framework of Correspondence Theory by the Output-to-Output (00) Weight-Identity Constraint, which regulates weight identity between the two possible output forms. This paper argues that the notion of faithfulness is extensible to the forms related not only by morphological rules but also by phonological rules. (Kyungpook National University)
