Tuberculous peritonitis is discovered from sixty to ninty percent of pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific such as mild fever, weakness and malaise but show tenderness in right lower abdomen and abdominal distension. Diagnosis is confirmed by laparoscopic and pathologic findings. We report a case of tuberculous peritonitis in an 11-year-old boy who was hospitalized because of abdominal distension with pain on right lower abdomen which had developed one day before he came to hospital. Chest X-ray showed pleural effusion on both sides. We did laparoscopic examination and observed diffuse nodular infiltration. In biopsy specimen we observed osseous granuloma and acid-fast bacilli in AFB stain.

Objectives: This study investigated the gene expression profile in basal ganglia of manganese-exposed rats based on cDNA array analysis. Methods: For cDNA array, 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats (250±25 g) were intraperitoneally injected with 25 ㎎/㎏ B. W./day of MnCl2 (0.3 ㎖) for 10 days. For dose-related gene expression analysis, rats were intraperitoneally injected with 0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 ㎎/㎏ B. W/day of MnCl2 for 10 days. Control rats were injected with an equal volume of saline. RNA samples were extracted from brain tissue and reverse-transcribed in the presence of [α^(32)P]-dATP. Membrane sets of the Atlas Rat 1.2 array Ⅱ and Toxicology array 1.2 kit (Clontech, Palo Alto, CA) were hybridized with cDNA probe sets. Northern blot hybridization method was employed to assess the dose-related gene expression. Results: Fifty-two genes showed significant changes in expression of more than two-fold. Twenty-eight were up-regulated and 24 were down-regulated in the manganese-exposed group compared to the control. Among the 52 genes, 28 genes including nuclear factor I-X1 (NF1-X1), neuroligin 2 and 3, mitochondrial stress-70 protein (MTHSP70), neurodegeneration-associated protein 1 (Neurodap 1), multidrug resistance protein (MDR), and endoplasmic reticulum stress protein 72 (ERP72), were reported for the first time related to the manganese-induced neurotoxic-metabolism in the rat basal ganglia. According to the dose-related gene expression analyses, MTHSP70, Neurodap 1 and ERP72 genes were up-regulated compared to the control even in the group exposed to low manganese dose ( 0.2 ㎎/㎏ B.W./day). Conclusions: Twenty-eight genes detected for the first time in this study were closely related to the manganese-induced neurotoxic-metabolism in the rat basal ganglia and further study of these genes can give some more useful information about the manganese metabolism.

The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the effects of virtual reality combined with balance training on upper limb function, balance, and activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with acute stroke. The both groups received conventional rehabilitation for 30 min/days, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks. Additionally, the experimental group received 30 minutes of virtual reality training on unstable surface for each session, while the control group received 30 minutes of virtual reality training without unstable surface. To examine the upper limb function, balance, and ADL, the study used Manual Function Test (MFT), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Korean Modified Barthel Index (KMBI), respectively. The both groups showed significant improvements in MFT, BBS, KMBI before and after the intervention. The experimental group showed no significant difference in MFT, BBS, K-MBI after intervention compared with the control group. In the changes of fall risk, the experimental group showed a greater decrease in numbers of fall risk (BBS <45) before and after intervention than the control group. These finding suggest that the virtual reality training combined with balance training may have a better effect on balance improvement than virtual reality training without balance training in post-stroke.

The objective of the present study was to determine and characterize the relationship between the cardiovascular effect and plasma concentration of carvedilol by PK/PD modeling in human. A group of 32 healthy males received oral doses of 25 mg carvedilol, and blood samples were collected thirteen times for up to 30 hours after the drug administration. The effect of carvedilol on blood pressure was measured during the same period. This experiment was analyzed using the liquid-liquid extractions of carvedilol by HPLC with fluorescence detection. Pharmacokinetics parameters of carvedilol were calculated using the two-compartment model with first-order absorption. The average value of C_(max), T_(max), CL/F (apparent clearance), V/F (apparent volume of distribution) and half-life of carvedilol were 62.74 ± 20.12 ng/ml, 1.26 ± 0.86 hrs, 94.64 ± 46.01 L/hr, 1561.78 ± 941.94 L, 12.47 hr, respectively. To explain the relationship between the cardiovascular effect and plasma concentration of carvedilol, plasma drug concentrations were linked to the observed SBP and DBP via a effect compartment with a sigmoid Emax model. The model parameters were estimated by using ADAPT Ⅱ program. This PK/PD model could describe the relationship between plasma concentrations of carvedilol and cardiovascular effect such as the aspects of decreasing blood pressure and the time delay between plasma concentration and pharmaco-dynamic data.

This paper reports some experimental results on the machining performance of non-ground cross hole type milling inserts. Six kinds of milling inserts were manufactured without using grinding process. Machining experiments were carried out to compare the machining performance of non-ground inserts with that of ground ones. The experimental results indicate that the cutting forces and surface roughnesses of machined surface of both ground and non-ground inserts are comparable.

The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of HPV types(16, 18) in cervix of gynecologic patients and to elucidate the relationship of HPV types(16, 18) and clinical characteristics. Human papilloma virus(HPV) has attracted attention as one of the viruses linked to human cancers. Numerous clinical, epidemiological, and molecular studies indicate that certain genital HPV types are associated with cervical carcinoma. Of 100 types of HPV identified today, at least 40 have been found in the anogenital mucosa. A classification of these types into three groups with differing pathogenicity has been proposed: HPV type 6, 11, 42, 43, and 44 are detected more frequently in benign lesions such as condylomata; HPV type 31, 33, 35, 51, 52, and 58 are found more often in low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions than invasive lesions; and HPV 16, 18, 45, and 56 are predominant in high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and invasive carcinoma. To detect HPV types prevalent in carcinoma of the uterine cervix, a type-specific, sensitive polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-based assay for HPV types 16, 18 was applied to 18 cervical carcinomas(15 squamous cell carcinomas and 3 adenocarcinomas), 21 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN), and 42 samples of cervicitis and histologically normal. DNA extraction from cervical swab was done using DNAzol™(MBI, USA) and Nested PCR was done using HPV detection kit(Bioneer, Korea). The amplified product was analyzed directly on the basis of the site of ethidium bromide-stained band visible after agarose gel electrophoresis. The results were as follows 1. The positivity rates of HPV type 16 and HPV type 18 were 12.5%(90/718), 2,5%(18/718). so, HPV 16 positive cases(12.5%) was five folds as HPV 18 positive cases(2.5%) 2. Forty eight percents(39/81) of HPV 16 or HPV 18 positive cases were CIN, microinvasive cancer. 3. Age, Gestation number, Clinical stage, Histologic cell type in relation to HPV types were not statistically significant.
