        A New ent-Kaurane type Diterpenoid Glycoside from Inula japonica Thunb

        A new ent-kaurane type diterpenoid glycoside, 17-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-16α-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (1), together with 17-hydroxy-16α-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (2), 16α,17-dihydroxyl-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (3), and 16α-hydroxy-17-acetoxy-ent- kauran-19-oic acid (4) were isolated from the aerial parts of Inula japonica Thunb. The structure of 1 was determined mainly by use of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques including HSQC, 1H-1H COSY, HMBC, and NOESY. In addition, 4 exhibited significant inhibitory activity on NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells with IC50 value of 14.3 μg/mL.

      • Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer in Rural Areas of Wuhan China: a Matched Case-control Study

        Cervical cancer is a serious public health problem in developing countries. We investigated possible risk factors for cervical cancer in rural areas of Wuhan China using a matched case-control study with 33 women diagnosed with cervical cancer and 132 healthy women selected from the same area as matched controls. A questionnaire, which included questions about general demography conditions, environmental and genetic factors, the first sexual intercourse, first marriage age, age at first pregnancy, pregnancy first child's age, female personal health history, social psychological factors, dietary habits, smoking and alcohol status and other living habits was presented to all participants. At the same time, HPV infection of every participant was examined in laboratory testing. Results showed HPV infection (P<0.000, OR=23.4) and pregnancy first child's age (P<0.000, OR=13.1) to be risk factors for cervical cancer. Menopause (P=0.003, OR=0.073) was a protective factor against cervical cancer. However, there was no indication of associations of environmental (drinking water, insecticide, disinfectant) genetic (cancer family history), or life-style factors (smoking status, alcohol status, physical training, sleep quality), including dietary habits (intake of fruit and vegetable, meat, fried food, bean products and pickled food) or social psychological factors with cervical cancer. The results suggest that the risk of cervical cancer in Chinese rural women may be associated with HPV infection, menopause and the pregnancy first child's age.

        Benchmarking CENDL-3.1 with Critical Benchmarks

        In the frame of criticality safety, the new release of China Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, version 3.1, were validated with hundreds of critical benchmarks from the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments. These benchmarks were selected to cover fast spectrum, intermediate spectrum and thermal spectrum. Criticality calculations were performed by using Monte Carlo transport code MCNP4C. Continuous-energy point-wise libraries were prepared with nuclear data processing code NJOY99.259 The calculated eigenvalues for CENDL-2.1 and CENDL-3.1 were compared with the benchmark values. The validation showed that evaluations from CENDL-3.1 gave better predictions of k<sub>eff</sub> values than those from CENDL-2.1 in whole respect, especially in fast energy range.

        Acquiring the Passive Voice: Developmental Patterns of English Passive Constructions by Chinese EFL Learners

        The purpose of this study was to explore the developmental patterns of English passives with reference to learners’ proficiency. To this end, we collected data from 51 lower-level and 54 higher-level college students. A Chinese-English translation was first conducted to see how learners acquired target English passives objectively, and a difficulty evaluation was given to see whether learners’ subjective judgments were identical with their performances in translation. Three results were found. First, learners’ acquisition of English passives follows a relatively fixed order. The objective and subjective orders are statistically significant and consistent. Second, the orders can be further represented by hierarchies, which are more stable and consistent with NOH (Natural Order Hypothesis). Third, learners’ acquisition also exhibits transitional stages, in the process of which the grammaticalization of English passives gradually approximates the level of native speakers’. Based on the findings, a Natural Acquisition Stability and Variability Hypothesis is tentatively proposed, which includes a theoretically fixed natural order and an actualized variable order. These results indicate that although the acquisition order is stable, it is not strictly linear, but non-linear with unevenly paced twists and turns in the acquisition.         As a recently-released bag brand after a variety of famous Italian ones, O BAG (Fullspot), a brand that allows consumers to accessorise in a free way to finally finish products on their own, is a design of emotional experience integrating sentimental entertainment and rational thinking. All that the brand presents, including interpretation of DIY game spirit, freedom and transcendence of module concept, individualized presentation of self customization, experience of human emotions and system design thinking of brand style, belongs to the core connotation of Italian handicraft spirit. In this way, the handicraft spirit of machine products in post-industrial era is interpreted with a new look, the differences of O BAG are highlighted, and the diversity and differences of design wisdom are deeply integrated. 다양한 유명 이탈리아 브랜드들 후, 최근 출시 된 가방 브랜드인 O BAG (Fullspot)은 소비자들이 그들 스스로 제품의 마 무리를 할 수 있게 하였다. 이것은 소비자들의 정서적인 여흥으로 통합되는 감성적 경험과 합리적 사고의 디자인이라 할 수 있다. 브랜드가 제시하는 모든 것은 DIY 게임 정신, 모듈 개념의 자유와 초월성, 자체 맞춤화의 개별화 인간 감정의 경 험 및 브랜드 스타일에 대한 시스템적 디자인 사고를 포함한 이탈리아 수공예 정신의 핵심 의미를 포함한다. 이에, 산업화 시대의 기계 제품의 수공예 정신이 새로운 모습으로 해석되고 O BAG의 차이점이 강조되며 디자인 지혜의 다양성과 차이 가 깊이 통합된다고 본다.

        B-HMAX: A fast binary biologically inspired model for object recognition

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The biologically inspired model, Hierarchical Model and X (HMAX), has excellent performance in object categorization. It consists of four layers of computational units based on the mechanisms of the visual cortex. However, the random patch selection method in HMAX often leads to mismatch due to the extraction of redundant information, and the computational cost of recognition is expensive because of the Euclidean distance calculations for similarity in the third layer, S2. To solve these limitations, we propose a fast binary-based HMAX model (B-HMAX). In the proposed method, we detect corner-based interest points after the second layer, C1, to extract few features with better distinctiveness, use binary strings to describe the image patches extracted around detected corners, then use the Hamming distance for matching between two patches in the third layer, S2, which is much faster than Euclidean distance calculations. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed B-HMAX model can significantly reduce the total process time by almost 80% for an image, while keeping the accuracy performance competitive with the standard HMAX.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The binary HMAX model (B-HMAX) is proposed for object categorization. </LI> <LI> The B-HMAX can be processed much faster than HMAX in merit of proposed Binary S2 layer. </LI> <LI> The B-HMAX exhibits competitive recognition performance with HMAX. </LI> <LI> The B-HMAX exhibits much better recognition performance than SIFT and FREAK. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Effects of contraction-type impeller on non-overloaded performance for low-specific-speed sewage pump

        With the expansion of the engineering application of solid-liquid two-phase flow, the overload characteristics of low-specific-speedsewage pumps become an important obstacle to the development of the products. In this paper, the traditional diffusion-type impeller isutilized to carry out hydraulic design of a low-specific-speed sewage pump. And on this basis, the thickness of the blades is increased forgetting an impeller with contractive-type flow channel. It was found out that through external characteristics, the efficiency of contraction-type impeller is slightly lower than that of diffusion-type impeller, but it shows obvious non-overload performance. PIV experimentis arranged to find the inherent. The results show that although internal flow field distribution of contraction-type impeller is better thanthat of diffusion-type impeller, the severe uneven distribution of absolute velocity of the impeller outlet along the circumference is one ofmain reasons of inefficiency. In addition, another five impellers with different contraction ratio are designed to research relationship betweencontraction ratio and character of non-overload. The characteristics are predicted by CFD, and after comparing the results, it isfound out that, the smaller the contraction ratio is, the closer the condition of power extreme is to the design condition, which has importantimplications for the engineer.
