Transforming growth factor 1 (TGF1)/Smad4 signaling plays a pivotal role in maintenance of the dynamic balance between bone formation and resorption. The microRNA miR-155 has been reported to exert a significant role in the differ-entiation of macrophage and dendritic cells. The goal of this study was to determine whether miR-155 regulates osteoclast differentiation through TGF1/Smad4 signaling. Here, we present that TGF1 elevated miR-155 levels during osteoclast differentiation through the stimulation of M-CSF and RANKL. Additionally, we found that silencing Smad4 attenuated the upregulation of miR-155 induced by TGF1. The results of luciferase reporter experiments and ChIP assays demonstrated that TGF1 promoted the binding of Smad4 to the miR-155 promoter at a site located in 454 bp from the transcription start site in vivo, further verifying that miR-155 is a transcriptional target of the TGF1/Smad4 pathway. Subsequently, TRAP staining and qRT-PCR analysis revealed that silencing Smad4 impaired the TGF1-mediated inhibition on osteoclast differentiation. Finally, we found that miR-155 may target SOCS1 and MITF to suppress osteoclast differentiation. Taken together, we provide the first evidence that TGF1/Smad4 signaling affects osteoclast differentiation by regulation of miR-155 expression and the use of miR-155 as a potential therapeutic target for osteoclast-related diseases shows great promise.
A strategy to prepare internally plasticized PVC using a castor oil based derivative

Internally plasticized PVC was prepared via chemical reaction of azide PVC and alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester. The chemical structure of alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester and internally plasticized PVC was characterized with FT-IR and 1H NMR. Properties of internally plasticized PVC, including thermal stability, tensile tests and resistance to extraction in different solvents, was investigated. The results showed that alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester, as internal plasticizer of PVC, not only decreased the Tg of PVC from 84.6oC to 41.6oC efficiently, but also presented no plasticizer loss in five different solvents. The tensile tests showed that elongation at break and tensile strength of internally plasticized PVC was 353.8% and 18.1MPa. The internally plasticized PVC has potential application in replacing the traditional PVC material in PVC products with high durability.
Effects of Sulfur Introduction on the UV and the Visible Emission Properties of ZnO

Hexagonal ZnO particles have been synthesized by using the hydrothermal method with differentsulfur concentrations in the reaction solutions. Structural and optical characterizations have beenconducted to study the effects of the sulfur in the reaction solutions on the properties of thesynthesized ZnO in the ultraviolet (UV) and the visible (VIS) bands. The existance of sulfur inthe solutions can help to introduce compression strain along the a axis and an opposite trend forthe parameter c with strain inside the formed ZnO particles, which means the total strain in thesamples is presented along the c axis. The average size of the ZnO particles, as calculated fromSEM images, shows the same trend as the strain in the samples. The increasing incorporation ofsulfur causes an increase in the VIS luminescence band, which can be attributed to an increase inthe number of sulfur-induced defects.
Lane Detection and Tracking based on Annealed Particle Filter

This paper describes a highway lane detection and tracking algorithm based on an annealed particle filter; the algorithm combines multiple cues of road images with the annealed particle filter. We build a geometric lane model that can be applied to not only linear roads but also to curved roads. As a first step, preprocessing with a bar filter and color cues is used. In the annealed particle filter step, a K-means algorithm is utilized to measure the weights of the particles. We realize lane detection and tracking using the annealed particle filter which is the main contribution of the current paper. Experi-mental results show that our method is effective in various road situations. What’s more, the particle number and time cost of the annealed particle filter for each frame is largely reduced compared with those values when using the conventional particle filter.
Remarks on Weak Reversibility-over-center

Huang et al. proved that the n by n upper triangular matrix ring over a domain is weakly reversible-over-center by using the property of regular matrices. In this article we provide a concrete proof which is able to be available in the related study of centers. Next we extend an example of weakly reversible-over-center, which was argued by Huang et al., to the general case.
Structures Related to Right Duo Factor Rings

We study the structure of rings whose factor rings modulo nonzero proper ideals are right duo; such rings are called right FD. We first see that this new ring property is not left-right symmetric. We prove for a non-prime right FD ring R that R is a subdirect product of subdirectly irreducible right FD rings; and that R/N∗(R) is a subdirect product of right duo domains, and R/J(R) is a subdirect product of division rings, where N∗(R) (J(R)) is the prime (Jacobson) radical of R. We study the relation among right FD rings, division rings, commutative rings, right duo rings and simple rings, in relation to matrix rings, polynomial rings and direct products. We prove that if a ring R is right FD and 0 ̸= e2 = e ∈ R then eRe is also right FD, examining that the class of right FD rings is not closed under subrings.
