What Did They Mean by “Calculation Principles”?: Revisiting Argumentative Styles in Late Ming to Mid-Qing Chinese Mathematics

        ( Su Jim-hong ),( Ying Jia-ming ) 한국과학사학회 2016 한국과학사학회지 Vol.38 No.2

This article discusses the influence that two versions of the Elements had in Ming and Qing China as well as Chinese scholars` efforts to “integrate” (huitong 會通) Western and Chinese mathematics into a unified system in terms of argumentative styles in mathematics. Although much high praise was given to the axiomatic-de-ductive system of Euclid`s Elements, numerical arguments and problem-solving re-main important traits in the works of Chinese scholars. The compilation of the Shuli jingyun 數理精蘊 and the inclusion of another version of the Elements in it again prompted East Asian mathematicians to reflect more upon their methods of argu-mentation, and later scholars began to write texts whose arguments are more abstract than numerical. This paper presents examples taken from the works of several rep-resentative scholars from the late Ming to the mid-Qing periods to argue that their efforts of huitong produced argumentative styles that are a combination of both Chi-nese and Western approaches, and that there was a trend of moving from concrete calculations to general arguments in mathematical texts throughout the course of history. Finally, the authors conclude that what 17th and 18th century Chinese math-ematicians meant by “calculation principles” (suanli 算理) was never the kind of pure deduction in the Euclidean manner, but a combination of induction and deduc-tion, with the help of intuition, for the purpose of problem-solving.

      • Inhibition of Breast Cancer Metastasis Via PITPNM3 by Pachymic Acid

Hong, Ri,Shen, Min-He,Xie, Xiao-Hong,Ruan, Shan-Ming Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.5

Breast cancer metastasis is the most common cause of cancer-related death in women. Thus, seeking targets of breast tumor cells is an attractive goal towards improving clinical treatment. The present study showed that CCL18 from tumor-associated macrophages could promote breast cancer metastasis via PITPNM3. In addition, we found that pachymic acid (PA) could dose-dependently inhibit migration and invasion of MDA-MB-231cells, with or without rCCL18 stimulation. Furthermore, evidence was obtained that PA could suppress the phosphorylation of PITPNM3 and the combination of CCL18 and PITPNM3. Therefore, we speculate that PA could inhibit breast cancer metastasis via PITPNM3.

Galangin Prevents Acute Hepatorenal Toxicity in Novel Propacetamol-Induced Acetaminophen-Overdosed Mice

        Ming-Shiun Tsai,Chia-Chih Chien,Ting-Hui Lin,Chia-Chi Liu,Rosa Huang Liu,Hong-Lin Su,Yung-Tsung Chiu,Sue-Hong Wang 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.11

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose causes severe liver and kidney damage. APAP-induced liver injury (AILI) represents the most frequent cause of drug-induced liver failure. APAP is relatively insoluble and can only be taken orally; however, its prodrug, propacetamol, is water soluble and usually injected directly. In this study, we examined the timedependent effects of AILI after propacetamol injection in mice. After analyses of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities and liver histopathology, we demonstrated that a novel AILI mouse model can be established by single propacetamol injection. Furthermore, we compared the protective and therapeutic effects of galangin with a known liver protective extract, silymarin, and the only clinical agent for treating APAP toxicity, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), at the same dose in the model mice. We observed that galangin and silymarin were more effective than NAC for protecting against AILI. However, only NAC greatly improved both the survival time and rate consequent to a lethal dose of propacetamol. To decipher the hepatic protective mechanism(s) of galangin, galangin pretreatment significantly decreased the hepatic oxidative stress, increased hepatic glutathione level, and decreased hepatic microsomal CYP2E1 levels induced by propacetamol injection. In addition, propacetamol injection also reproduced the probability of APAP-induced kidney injury (AIKI), appearing similar to a clinical APAP overdose. Only galangin pretreatment showed the protective effect of AIKI. Thus, we have established a novel mouse model for AILI and AIKI using a single propacetamol injection. We also demonstrated that galangin provides significant protection against AILI and AIKI in this mouse model.

Continuous Cooling Transformation Behavior and Impact Toughness in Heat-Affected Zone of Nb-Containing Fire-Resistant Steel

        Hong Hong Wang,Zhan Peng Qin,Xiang Liang Wan,Ran Wei,Kai Ming Wu,Devesh Misra 대한금속·재료학회 2017 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.23 No.5

Simulated heat-affected zone continuous cooling transformation diagram was developed for advanced fireresistantsteel. Over a wide range of cooling rates, corresponding to t8/5 from 6 s to 150 s, granular bainite was thedominant transformation constituent, while the morphology of less dominant martensite-austenite (M-A) constituentchanged from film-like to block-type constituent; but the hardness remained similar to the average value of 190-205 HV (0.2). The start and finish transformation temperature was high at 700 °C and 500 °C, and is different fromthe conventional high strength low alloy steels. It is believed that the high-content (0.09 wt%) of Nb may promotebainite transformation at relatively high temperatures. Martenistic matrix was not observed at high cooling rateand the film-like M-A constituent and blocky M-A constituent with thin film of retained austenite and lath martensitewere observed on slow cooling. Excellent impact toughness was obtained in the heat-affected zone with15-75 kJ/cm welding heat input.

Microstructure and corrosion resistance of Ni-based alloy laser coatings with nanosize CeO2 addition

Hong Zhang, Shi,Xi Li, Ming,Hong Yoon, Jae,Yul Cho, Tong,Zhu He, Yi,Gyu Lee, Chan Elsevier 2008 SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF ADVANCED MATERIALS Vol.9 No.3

<P>Micron-size Ni-base alloy (NBA) powders were mixed with both 1.5 wt.% (hereinafter %) micron-size CeO2 (<I>m</I>-CeO2) and also 1.5% and 3.0% nano-size CeO2 (<I>n</I>- CeO2) powders. These mixtures were coated on low-carbon steel (Q235) by 2.0 kW CO2 laser cladding. The effects on the microstructures, phases and electrochemical corrosion of the coatings upon the addition of <I>m</I>- and <I>n</I>- CeO2 powders to NBA (<I>m</I>- and <I>n</I>- CeO2 /NBA) have been investigated. The results showed that a smooth coating was prepared under suitable processing parameters (<I>P</I>= 2.0 kW, <I>V</I>= 180 mm min- 1) by adding 1.5% <I>n</I>- CeO2. In addition to the primary phases of γ-Ni, Cr23 C6 and Ni3 B in the Ni-base alloy coating, CeNi3 was formed in Ni-base alloy coatings with both <I>n</I>- CeO2 and <I>m</I>-CeO2 particles, and CeNi5 appeared in the coating upon decreasing the size of CeO2 particles. Well-developed dendrites were observed in the Ni-base alloy coating; directional dendrites grew at the interface in the coating upon the addition of <I>m</I>-CeO2, whereas fine and multioriented dendrites grew upon decreasing the size of CeO2 particles to the nanoscale. Actinomorphic dendrites and compact equiaxed dendrites grew from the interface to near the surface upon increasing the content of <I>n</I>- CeO2 from 1.5 to 3.0%. In strongly acidic HNO3 solution, the severe corrosion of dendrites occurred and there were many corrosion pits in the Ni-base alloy coating; intercrystalline corrosion also has a dominant role upon the addition of <I>m</I>-CeO2, whereas uniform corrosion occurs in the coating as the size of CeO2 particles is decreased to nanoscale.</P>

      • Emulsion-directed liquid/liquid interfacial fabrication of lanthanide ion-doped block copolymer composite thin films

        Hong, Ming,Geng, Yuanyuan,Liu, Mei,Xu, Yuan,Lee, Yong-Ill,Hao, Jingcheng,Liu, Hong-Guo Elsevier 2015 JOURNAL OF COLLOID AND INTERFACE SCIENCE - Vol.438 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An emulsion-directed assembly and adsorption approach has been used to fabricate composite films of polystyrene-b-poly(acryl acid)-b-polystyrene (PS-b-PAA-b-PS) and Eu3+ and La3+ ions at the planar liquid/liquid interface of the polymer DMF/chloroform (1:1, v/v) mixed solution (lower phase) and aqueous solutions of the corresponding salts (upper phase). The lower phase gradually transformed to a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion via spontaneous emulsification due to the “ouzo effect”. Polymer molecules and the metal ions assembled around emulsion droplets that adsorbed at the planar liquid/liquid interface at last, resulting in formation of composite films. The film morphologies and structures depend on Ln3+ ions: polymer/Eu3+ composite films were foam films composed of microcapsules ranging in size from several hundreds of nanometers to micrometers, while polymer/La3+ composite films were composed of hollow spheres several tens of nanometers in size. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed that the coordination modes of carboxyl groups to Eu3+ and La3+ were bridging bidentate and ionic, respectively, in the two types of composites. These results indicate that stable microcapsules can be fabricated around droplets for polymer/Eu3+ systems, while microcapsules of polymer/La3+ are unstable. This leads to different film morphologies and structures. Compositions of these films were characterized using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, foam films of polymer/Eu3+/2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) were fabricated using this approach, and their photoluminescence properties were investigated.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Composite films of block copolymer/Ln3+ were fabricated at liquid/liquid interfaces. </LI> <LI> Eu3+ and La3+ have great effects on morphologies and microstructures of the films. </LI> <LI> Polymer/Eu3+ and polymer/Eu3+/bpy films exhibit good luminescent properties. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Low-Charge Electrotherapy in Geriatric Major Depressive Disorder Patients: A Case Series

        Xiao-ming Kong,Xin-hui Xie,Shu-xian Xu,Yang Chen,Chen Wang,Hong Hong,Yan Sun 대한신경정신의학회 2019 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.16 No.6

To examine the feasibility of low-charge electrotherapy (LCE) in treating geriatric major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. Bi-temporal LCEs (approximately 25 mC) were performed with an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) instrument three times per week. We used the Hamilton Depression Scale 17 (HAMD-17) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) to assess the effects of LCE and the Mini- Mental State Examination (MMSE) to evaluate the cognitive function change before and after LCE. Six visits occurred at the baseline, after LCE sessions 3, 6, and 9, after the last session, and at the end of the one-month follow-up period. Four patients were enrolled in the study. Two patients completed all LCE sessions. Two patients withdrew during the trial, one due to the adverse event of uroschesis potentially caused by atropine and the other due to her own will. All four patients completed the follow-up sessions. The HAMD-17 and HAMA scores were reduced significantly at the last LCE session and the end of the follow-up period compared with the scores at the baseline. As measured by the MMSE, cognitive impairment showed no significant changes at the last LCE session and the end of the follow- up period compared with that at the baseline. In this case series, LCE showed potential as an alternative current-based treatment for treating geriatric MDD patients. Further research is needed to assess the efficiency and safety of LCE.
