Mythopoesis in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson
Carey, Hilda 聖心女子大學校 1979 論文集 Vol.10 No.-
Emily Dickinson and myth are no strangers, but their relationship has been characterized all too often by misrepresentation, misunderstanding, and inaccuracy. Although frequently called one, she was no myth; her poems are not truly mythic, but they are undoubtedly mythopoeic. Long before 1881, when Mabel Loomis Todd first arrived in Amherst, ED's deliberately chosen seclusion and exclusive preference for white dresses had inspired village gossips to brand her as "The Myth." Fascinated by finding such legendary possibilities in an otherwise dull, provincial town, Mrs. Todd wrote her parents shortly after her arrival: I must tell you about the character of Amherst. It is a lady whom the people call the Myth..... She has not been outside of her own house in fifteen years, except once to see a new church, when she crept out at night&viewed it by moonlight.... She dresses wholly in white&her mind is said to be perfectly wonderful. She writes finely, but no one ever sees her..... No one knows the cause of her isolation, but of course there are dozens of reasons assigned.

We investigated the cytotoxic and antitumor effects of nine leaf extracts from Artemisia dracunculus (Tarragon). Five extracts were obtained using different organic solvents and four by supercritical CO2. The cytotoxic effects were expressed as IC50 in 100, 80, 80, 100, and 80 μg/mL by respective solvents: hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone, ethanol, and acetonitrile in L5178Y lymphoma cells. For supercritical CO2 extract A, IC50 was 100 μg/mL; for extracts C and D, IC50 was 150 μg/mL. The antitumor activity was assessed through a tumor growth inhibition test that measured ascites fluid volume and tumor cell counts of BALB/c mice (2 × 104 cells L5178Y i.p.). Twenty-four hours after inoculation, mice were treated with 100 mg/kg of acetonitrile extract or extract SF-A daily for 15 days in independent groups of five mice, using two administration routes. We observed tumor evolution with and without treatment. Without treatment, tumor evolution was 17,969 × 106 ± 5485 L5178Y cells in 2.6 mL ascites volume, whereas the orally treated acetonitrile extract group showed 0.1 × 106 ± 0.07 L5178Y cells (P < .05). The oral SF-A group showed 12.9 × 106 ± 243 L5178Y cells, and intraperitoneal (i.p.)-treated SF-A group showed 0.1 × 106 ± 0.05 L5178Y cells (P < .05) without any ascites volume development. The acetonitrile extract contains abundant polyphenols and possibly a flavone with antioxidant activity. The SF-A contains abundant alkamides. Both extracts are complexes and the identity of the compounds responsible for observed antitumor activity remains unknown.
Enterobacter cloacae, an Emerging Plant-Pathogenic Bacterium Affecting Chili Pepper Seedlings

A previously unreported bacterial disease on chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings affecting as many as 4% of seedlings was observed in greenhouses in Chihuahua, Mexico (Delicias and Meoqui counties). Initial lesions appeared as irregular small spots on leaves and brown necrosis at margins tips were observed. Later, the spots became necrotic with a chlorotic halo. Advanced disease was associated with defoliation. A Gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from diseased chili pepper seedlings. Three inoculation methods revealed that isolated strains produce foliage symptoms, similar to those observed in naturally infected seedlings. Pathogenic strains that caused symptoms in inoculated seedlings were re-isolated and identified to fulfill koch´s postulate. Polyphasic approaches for identification including biochemical assays (API 20E and 50CH), carbon source utilization profiling (Biolog) and 16S rDNA, hsp60 and rpoB sequence analysis were done. Enterobacter cloacae was identified as the causal agent of this outbreak on chili pepper seedlings.
