Spirantization and the Notion of Phonological Strength Relations in Assamese: An Optimality Theoretic Account

Hemanga Dutta 세종대학교 언어연구소 2012 Journal of Universal Language Vol.13 No.1

The paper investigates the problem of phonological strength relations that account for the organization of speech sounds in a specific fashion in the light of spirantization process as attested in the Assamese language, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the northeastern part of India. In Assamese aspirated stops /pʰ/ and /bʰ/ are spirantized as [f] and [v] in word-final position, leaving the unaspirated stops intact. In word-initial and medial positions spirantization is blocked in Assamese. De-aspiration in Assamese does not apply to word final position when no following consonant occurs. In Assamese, coda is de-aspirated when it is followed by an aspirated onset. However the fricatives /f/ and /v/ never lose their feature [+asp] despite the fact that both consonants occur in the word-final position or in coda position, being followed by aspirated onset. They turn in to /pʰ/ and /bʰ/ respectively when they are followed by obstruents. Nevertheless, the feature [+asp] is maintained in the onset position which does not undergo alternation. Distribution of Assamese aspirated phonemes at word boundary inform us that only the labial stops spirantize at the word-final position unlike coronal and velar stops which are not susceptible to the process of spirantization.

Syllable Structure and Word Stress in Central Kerala Konkani Variety: An OT Approach

Rupashri Ashok,Hemanga Dutta 세종대학교 언어연구소 2021 Journal of Universal Language Vol.22 No.1

This paper addresses the possible phonological patterns governing the syllable structures and word stress in Central Kerala Konkani. Unlike other northern dialects spoken in Kerala, Central Konkani variety does not allow any consonant clusters; instead it makes use of repair strategies such as vowel insertion and consonant deletion which result in resyllabification. The resulting words can be explained with the following constraints couched in Optimality Theory in the order: *CC >> NoCoda >> DEP-IO. Here we have observed that stress in Central Konkani is placed on the heaviest syllable. However, in cases where a word has two heavy syllables or only light syllables, stress is on the leftmost syllable. This is explained by the constraints ranked as WSP >> Edgemost (pk;L).

The Adaptation of French Consonant Clusters in Vietnamese Phonology: An OT Account

Huynh Trang Nguyen,Hemanga Dutta 세종대학교 언어연구소 2017 Journal of Universal Language Vol.18 No.1

The phenomenon of phonological adaptation arises due to the segmental, phonotactic, supra-segmental, and morpho-phonological restrictions of the borrowing language. This paper specifically discusses the adaptation of French consonant clusters both in onset and coda positions when borrowed into Vietnamese in the framework of Optimality Theory. The primary objective of the current study is to examine how Vietnamese speakers select repair strategies such as epenthesis or deletion in modifying French words. The adaptation of foreign phonemes supports the role of the native language. In French loans adapted in Vietnamese, foreign segments not present in the native language, are completely banned. Phonotactic adaptations of illicit syllable structures showed that deletion is the favored option to avoid clusters in the coda position. Onset clusters, which are disallowed in native Vietnamese, are repaired either by the strategy of epenthesis or deletion. The constraint hierarchy for the Vietnamese loan phonology can be presented as follows: OK->> IDENT-IO (µ) >> MAX-SON >> MAX-Licensed segment >> IDENT-F >> ALIGN-L/ ALIGN-R >> DEP-IO >> MAX-IO.

Ethnomedicinal Practices and Traditional Medicinal Plants of Barak Valley, Assam: a systematic review

        Barbhuiya Pervej Alom,Laskar Abdul Mannaf,Mazumdar Hemanga,Dutta Partha Pratim,Pathak Manash Pratim,Dey Biplab Kumar,Sen Saikat 대한약침학회 2022 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.25 No.3

Objectives: The Barak Valley is well known for its rich diversity of medicinal plants. Ethnomedicinal practices are prominent among Barak Valley’s major and minor ethnic groups. This systemic review focuses on traditionally used medicinal plants found in the Barak Valley as reported in different ethnobotanical surveys. Methods: We searched various databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, to find ethnomedicinal surveys conducted in the Barak Valley. The search was performed using different terms, including ethnomedicinal survey, folk medicine, indigenous knowledge, and Barak Valley. Potential articles were identified following the exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results: A total of eight ethnobotanical surveys were included in this study. We identified a total of 216 plant species belonging to 167 genera and 87 families, which are widely used by the ethnic communities who live in the rural areas of Barak Valley for the treatment of various diseases and ailments. Conclusion: Folk medicine is the result of decades of accumulated knowledge and practices by people who live in rural communities based on their needs and provides an important source of information to assist the search for new pharmaceuticals. Therefore, available information on traditional medicinal plants needs to be explored scientifically to find effective and alternative treatments for different diseases.
