The three flavone glycosides, 4'-O-methylisoscutellarein 7-O-(6'''-O-acetyl)-b-D-allopyranosyl(1→2)-b-D-glucopyranoside (1), isoscutellarein 7-O-(6'''-O-acetyl)-b-D-allopyranosyl(1→2)-b-D-glucopyranoside (3), and isoscutellarein 7-O-b-D-allopyranosyl(1→2)-b-D-glucopyranoside (4) in addition to a flavonol glycoside, kaempferol 3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (astragalin, 2), were isolated from Stachys japonica (Lamiaceae). In cholinesterase inhibition assay, compound 1 significantly inhibited aceylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activities (IC50s, 39.94 mg/ml for AChE and 86.98 mg/ml for BChE). The content of isolated compounds were evaluated in this plant extract by HPLC analysis. Our experimental results suggest that the flavonoid glycosides of S. japonica could prevent the memory impairment of Alzheimer's disease.

Two known eudesmanolides, magnolialide and artesin, were isolated from the roots of Cichorium intybus. Their structures were confirmed by HMBC and NOESY NMR spectral interpretation. Therefore, guaianolides and eudesmanolides that have been previously reported should be revised.

for the cytotoxicity from plant origin is the first stage for anti-cancer drug development. Avariety of terpenoids with exomethylene, epoxide, allyl, α,β-unsaturated carbonyl, acetylenes, and α-methylene-γ-pathways. These are found among monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, triterpenes, flavonoids, coumarins, diarylhep-tanoids, and even organosulfuric compounds. The most essential characteristics of natural cytotoxic substances isto possess the strong electrophilicity that is susceptible to nucleophilic biomolecules in the cell. Thiol-reductantsand superoxide dismutase can block or delay apoptosis. Thus, ROS and the resulting cellular redox-potentialchanges can be parts of the signal transduction pathway during apoptosis. Disturbance of the balance of oxi-Saponins with the cytotoxicity are restricted to their monodesmosides, rather than to bisdesmosides. Thosesaponins exhibited calcium ion-mediated apoptosis in addition to cytotoxicity whereas they showed alsodifferentiation without extracellular calcium ion. The properties on cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and differentiationwere assumed to depend on resultant oxidative stress to the cells. A Potent Anti-diabetic Agent from Kalopanax pictus

To search for the anti-diabetic principle from the stem bark of Kalopanax pictus, seven kinds of chemical constituents including hederagenin glycosides and phenolic glycosides wre isolated. The anti-diabetic evaluation of these isoltes in the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats exhibited that kalopanaxsaponin A has a potent anti-diabetic activity in contrast to a mild activity of hederagenin. In addition, significant hypocholesterolemic and hypolipidemic activities of kalopanaxsaponin A and hederagenin were observed. The structure-activity relationship of kalopanaxsaponin A was also investigated in the present work.

수증기 증류법으로부터 얻은 배초향(Agastache rugosa, Labiatae)의 정유는 부패균을 포함하는 수종의 미생물에 대하여 현저한 항균활성을 나타내었다. 배초향의 유효성분을 확인하기 위하여 정유성분을 GC-MS로 분석한 결과 GC chromatogram에서 얻은 각 피크의 retention time 및 mass spectral data의 표준물질과의 비교에 의해서 isomenthone, menthone, dihydrocarvone, anethole, vanillin, eugenol, methyleugenol, β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide 등의 정유성분이 확인되었다. 이 연구에서 밝혀진 여러 성분들의 항균활성은 잘 알려져 있으므로 이들이 그 유효성분으로 추측된다. 또한 Korean mint로 세계적으로 알려져 있는 배초향의 정유는 식품 방부제로서 적합할 것으로 생각된다. The essential oil obtained by steam distillation from the herbs of Agastache rugosa showed significant antimicrobial activities against putrefactive bacterial strains along with other bacterial strains. For the elucidation of the volatile components, the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS. Each component was identified by GC or mass spectral analysis. The identified compounds were as follows : isomenthone, menthone, dihydrocarvone, anethole, vanillin, eugenol, methyleugenol, β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide. Several abundant components with phenylpropanoid-type structures were maybe contributable to the activity. This essential oil could be suitable for the development of a food presevative.
자원식물로서 응용을 위한 야광나무 열매의 식물화학적 연구

Very little utilization of the fruits of Malus baccata(Rosaceae) has been employed for food and medicinal plants except for preparing fruit beverages. But, it was estimated as valuable to investigate the chemical components for the botanical resource of this plant. In this study, it was found that the fruits of this plant contained primary long chain alcohol, β-sitosterol, campesterol, ursolic acid and β-D-glucosides of β-sitosterol and campesterol. However, phloretin(dihydrochalcone) and its 5-O-glucoside(phloridzin) known as plant growth regulators in many Rosaceae plants were not found in this plant material by co-TLC analysis with authentic specimens. Although plant sex hormone, estrone, was often contained in relates of M. baccata, e.g., Prunus spp., Crataegus spp. and Malus spp., this compound was not detected in this fruit by comparison with an authentic material. By RIC chromatography, it was suggested that the Soxhlet extraction by the solvent of ether was excellently useful to extract ursolic acid efficiently.

In a course of obtaining more amount of bioactive costunolide and successive phytochemical isolation from Magnolia sieboldii (Magnoliaceae), a novel acyclic monoterpene 1 named deoxygeraniol (2,6(E)-dimethyl-2,6-octadiene) was isolated along with $\beta$-sitosterol 3-O-linoleate (2), trilinolein (3) and high amount of costunolide (4) in the pure state. The structure of compound 1 was determined on the basis of spectroscopic data. Costunolide was found to induce apoptotic cell death in a dose-dependent manner by nucleosomal DNA ladder and flow cytometric analysis. Immunoblot analysis showed that the level of the anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2, was decreased, whereas the cleavage of poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase was, activated furthermore, the N-acetyl-L-cysteine antioxidant effectively prevented costunolide-induced cytotoxicity. These results suggest that costunolide-induced cell death is mediated by reactive oxygen species.
