        Time-Dependent Elastoplastic Constitutive Model

        The subloading surface model does not premise that the stress exists on the yield surface and thus describes a plastic deformation even when the stress exists inside the yield surface. The measure describing the degree that the stress approaches the yield surface or goes out from the surface is involved in this model. It is extended so as to describe the time-dependent deformation behavior of materials by allowing the stress to go out from the yield surface and considering the fact that a plastic deformation requires time to occur, although an elastic deformation is induced momentarily. Further, based on it, the constitutive equation of soils is formulated by taking the secondary consolidation phenomenon into account.

      • Morphological Traits of Lotus japonicus (Regal) Ecotypes Collected in Japan

        Forty-seven wild accessions of Lotus japonicus Regal (Japanese trefoil) indigenous to Japan were investigated for nine morphological characters. Average temperature and annual precipitation were negatively correlated with stem color and seed weight. On the other hand, latitude was positively correlated with these traits. Consequently, accessions from sites at higher latitudes with low temperatures and precipitation tend to have dark red stems and heavy seeds. Cluster analysis based on nine morphological characters classified 47 wild accessions into six major groups. Cluster I included four accessions of tall and erect plants. These plants are phenotypically similar to commercial variety 'Empire'. Cluster II consisted of three accessions of creep plants with pale red stems. Cluster III contained 24 accessions that had average values for all morphological characters evaluated. Cluster IV included two accessions of erect plants with rounded leaflets and dark red stems. Cluster V included four accessions of small, creep plants with pale red stems. Cluster VI included seven accessions of small and erect plants, a phenotype that also applies to ?Gifu B-129?, which is used as experimental strain worldwide. These data were deposited into LegumeBase, an online database (http://www.legumebase.brc.miyazaki-u.ac.jp/) supported by the National BioResource Project (NBRP) in Japan.

        BLOOD PROTEIN POLYMORPHISMS OF NATIVE AND JUNGLE FOWLS IN INDONESIA

        In an attempt to reveal the interrelationship between fowls of jungle and native origin, their gene constitutions were compared using gene frequencies at the 16 loci controlling blood protein variations. Of the 16 loci analysed by electrophoresis, polymorphism was detected at following seven loci: Es-1, Amy-1, Akp-akp, Akp-2, Alb, Tf and 6-PGD. The other nine loci: Amy-3, Es-D, PGM, PHI, MDH, To, LDH, Hb-1 and Hb-2, were noted to be monomorphic. Genetic distance between pairs of native fowl and jungle fowls was estimated by a numerical taxonomic method. The Indonesian native fowl was genetically close to the Indonesian red jungle fowl, and the grey jungle fowl was genetically similar to the Ceylonese jungle fowl. It was also suggested that the green jungle fowl was genetically remote from the other jungle fowls and from the Indonesian native flow. The proportion of polymorphic loci (Ppoly), the expected average heterozygosity per individual $\bar{H}$, and the effective number of alleles per locus (Ne) were calculated to evaluate the genetic variabilities in the native and jungle fowls. The Indonesian native fowl exhibited slightly higher the proportion of polymorphic loci than the jungle fowls.

        The Tangential Plasticity

        Various constitutive models for describing the inelastic stretching due to the stress rate component tangential to the yield or loading surface, i.e. the non-coaxiality of stress and inelastic stretching have been proposed in the past. However. a pertinent model applicable to a general loading process for materials with an arbitrary yield surface has not been proposed up to the present. In this article, the inelastic constitutive equation extended so as to describe the non-coaxiality is formulated generalizing the Rudnicki and Rice's [1] J₂-deformation theory in rate form and incorporating it into the subloading surface model with a smooth elastic-plastic transition.

        The Effect of Mung Bean (Vigna radiata (L.)) Coat Extract on Mouse Liver Metabolism During Progesterone Withdrawal

        Mung bean (Vigna radiata) is an immunomodulatory medicinal plant, which is recognized as a component of a traditional postpartum diet. The liver plays a crucial role in fatty acid synthesis under the control of various hormones that are affected by pregnancy. This study was designed to establish whether the mung bean water extract, which contains prostaglandins that can regulate corpus luteum maturation, provided any benefits to liver metabolism after the dynamic hormonal change associated with pregnancy. Female C57BL/6J mice were used, and all mice received daily injections of progesterone (5.0 mg/kg) for 5 days, after which progesterone was withdrawn for 3 days. Gel-free/label-free proteomic analysis revealed that the abundance of several proteins was affected in the liver. Hormone manipulation induced changes in lipid metabolism-related protein abundance; oral administration of mung bean coat extract (MBC) for 3 days mitigated the changes and downregulated the expression of Cpt1α, Akr1β, and Srebp1 in the liver. Together with immunological leukocyte modulation assessed via proteomic analysis, we suggest that MBC may exert health-promoting effects through the modulation of lipid synthesis during postpartum recovery.

        Biomechanical Study of Cervical Posterior Decompression

        Study Design: Biomechanical study. Purpose: We examined the dynamic characteristics of different operative procedures using three-dimensional finite-element models. Overview of Literature: Cervical laminoplasty is often selected for patients requiring multilevel spinal decompression. Many laminoplasty techniques have been developed and are continually being improved. Methods: Images were extracted for the two intervertebral joints between C3 and C5 in domestic rabbits. The following models were created: preoperative, laminectomy, Z-plasty, open door laminoplasty, French open door laminoplasty, en-bloc laminoplasty, and double-door laminoplasty. The loads required for sagittal rotation of 2.5°, 5°, and 7.5° were measured in vitro and respectively placed at the bottom of the C5 model. Displacement of the plate in the X, Y, and Z coordinates was measured and the rotational angles of the plate were determined. Results: The sagittal rotation angle was greater in the laminectomy model than in the preoperative model, but was almost the same in the preoperative and Z-plasty models. Compared with the preoperative model, sagittal rotation angles were smaller in the French open door, open door, en-bloc , and double-door laminoplasty models. Conclusions: Laminectomy and various types of laminoplasty are associated with different mechanical features, such as stability and mobility, allowing for selection of the most appropriate surgical procedure for each case.

        Biochemical changes in recombinant inbred lines of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) under storage-related stresses

        Soybean is a major crop that is rich in proteins, lipids, and isofavones. Although the seeds are widely used for food and industrial purposes, soybean is recognized as a crop that does not store well, as storage conditions greatly afect seed quality. In this study, we selected 10 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of soybean that are either sensitive or tolerant to storage, and examined the biochemical characteristics of the lines and their parents under storage-related stresses. The germination rates of all of the lines in the tolerant group were higher than those of the sensitive group for all storage conditions. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content was higher in the sensitive group than in the tolerant group, with the MDA content typically increasing under long-term storage conditions. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activities were also more afected by long-term storage, but not by higher temperatures. Isofavones were also assayed and it was found that the aglycones (except glycitein) increased with an increase of storage temperature. Malonyl isofavone glucosides tended to decrease under long-term storage and high temperature conditions, suggesting that malonyl glucosides are converted to their aglycones. These results illustrate the mechanisms underlying storage-related stresses and the importance of screening for lines that can tolerate environmental stresses.
