      • Exploring culinary heritage practices among the younger Chetti generations in Melaka

Nurul Hanis Mohd Fikri,Ahmad Esa Abdul Rahman,Ismayaza Noh 한국식품연구원 2021 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.8 No.-

Chetti or Peranakan Indian cuisine is a historical creolized minority ethnic cuisine of Malaysia that carries the gene of the country’s multi-ethnic sociocultural development. Its culinary heritage is a unique blend of South Indian, Malay, and Nyonya cuisines. Despite its unique role in symbolizing Malaysia’s status as a multicultural nation, little is documented about the ethnic cuisine. The fact that the Chetti ethnic population is extremely small and continually shrinking means that the future of Chetti cuisine is uncertain. In this context, this paper aims to investigate the role of the younger Chetti generation in reviving the ethnic culinary heritage and the transmission of Chetti traditional food knowledge (TFK) in the contemporary setting. There is evidence that the younger Chetti generation are straying from their culture’s traditional cuisine due to migration, modernization, and urbanization, among other reasons. There are concerns that this may lead to the extinction of Chetti culinary heritage. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight younger Chetti participants in the Chetti village of Gajah Berang, Melaka. The qualitative data obtained from the interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis and revealed four relevant themes. The study found that the younger Chetti generation is relatively knowledgeable about their ethnic culinary heritage but overall unskilled. Whilst they predominantly learn about their culture’s cuisine from their mothers, it was found that Chetti ceremonies and festivals, as well as participation in other cultural events, also contribute to TFK transfer among the younger Chetti generation.

Polyvinyl alcohol–alginate ferrophoto gels for mercury(II) removal

Azura Hanis A. Rahman,Chee Loong Teo,Ani Idris,Effaliza Misran,Siti Asma’ Nikmat Leong 한국공업화학회 2016 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.33 No.-

Maghemite (g-Fe2O3) nanoparticles were embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and alginate matrix toproduce beads that could be easily recovered with external magnetic field after treating mercury, Hg(II)in aqueous solution. 96% of Hg(II) was removed in 4 h under sunlight, at pH 11 and 16% (v/v) ofphotocatalyst dosage. FESEM results revealed that the beads possessed significant superporositystructure that greatly supported mass transfer of Hg(II) inside the beads. The removal of Hg(II) fitted wellwith Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) model exhibiting R2 (correlation coefficient) value of 0.9771. Thus, this study proved that it was feasible to treat Hg(II) solution with g-Fe2O3–PVA–alginate beads.

A Review of Cross-Cultural Design to Improve User Engagement for Learning Management System

Farhan Hanis Muhmad Asri,Dalbir Singh,Zulkefli Mansor,Helmi Norman 한국인터넷정보학회 2024 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.18 No.2

Online learning has become a widespread practice for students and teachers in acquiring and delivering knowledge. Education platforms have become prominent in the 21st century with the evolution of technology and the accessibility to online learning. As a result, various learning management systems (LMSs) have been introduced to facilitate online interaction between users. For instance, communication between students and teachers at school. However, there is a need to emphasise user engagement in LMS to enhance the online learning experience amongst students since the design of LMS affects user engagement. This study utilised a systematic literature review (SLR) that examined 74 articles published between 2014 and 2023, focusing on cross-cultural design (CCD), user-centred design (UCD), and usability in LMS design. This study aimed to review CCD and its association with UCD, user interfaces (UI), and user experience (UX) in the context of LMS. CCD has been introduced as an approach to design that embraces different cultures, languages, and social contexts, while UCD plays a significant role in defining user engagement for LMS. All elements in CCD and UCD help create a better user experience for LMS. Besides, this study reviewed the usability of selected LMS to give insights to developers in creating a positive user engagement. An insight into cultural factors that influence the usability of LMS has revealed their value for LMS design, such as the UI/UX elements. Initially, this study may guide future researchers in improving education quality by emphasising CCD and LMS usability, which can enhance user engagement.

      • Variant Alleles in XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln Polymorphisms Increase Risk of Gastrointestinal Cancer in Sabah, North Borneo

Halim, Noor Hanis Abu,Chong, Eric Tzyy Jiann,Goh, Lucky Poh Wah,Chuah, Jitt Aun,See, Edwin Un Hean,Chua, Kek Heng,Lee, Ping-Chin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4

Background: The XRCC1 protein facilitates various DNA repair pathways; single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in this gene are associated with a risk of gastrointestinal cancer (GIC) with inconsistent results, but no data have been previously reported for the Sabah, North Borneo, population. We accordingly investigated the XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln SNPs in terms of GIC risk in Sabah. Materials and Methods: We performed genotyping for both SNPs for 250 GIC patients and 572 healthy volunteers using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism approach. We validated heterozygosity and homozygosity for both SNPs using direct sequencing. Results: The presence of a variant 194Trp allele in the Arg194Trp SNP was significantly associated with a higher risk of GIC, especially with gastric and colorectal cancers. We additionally found that the variant 399Gln allele in Arg399Gln SNP was associated with a greater risk of developing gastric cancer. Our combined analysis revealed that inheritance of variant alleles in both SNPs increased the GIC risk in Sabah population. Based on our etiological analysis, we found that subjects ${\geq}50years$ and males who carrying the variant 194Trp allele, and Bajau subjects carrying the 399Gln allele had a significantly increased risk of GIC. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that inheritance of variant alleles in XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln SNPs may act as biomarkers for the early detection of GIC, especially for gastric and colorectal cancers in the Sabah population.

Background: A combination of facial cleanser and moisturizer is necessary to maintain healthy skin. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Luzstre facial cleanser and moisturizer on skin rejuvenation. Methods: A study was conducted with man and woman participants aged 20 to 60 years for 8 weeks. Luzstre facial cleanser and moisturizer were used twice a day (morning and night), and skin assessments of skin pores, wrinkles, elasticity, sebum, and hydration, were performed at baseline, week 3, and week 8. Participant satisfaction surveys were administered at the end of the study, and the adverse effects of both products were assessed based on the participants’ reports. Results: After 8 weeks of using Luzstre facial cleanser and moisturizer, there was a significant increase in skin hydration (p<0.05) compared to baseline. However, there were no significant changes in the participants’ skin pores, wrinkles, elasticity, or sebum levels from baseline to week 8. Most of the participants were satisfied with the products (86.9%). They reported that their skin felt hydrated and did not feel itchy. The participants perceived that the products provided a soothing sensation; their skin felt soft, did not feel dry or sticky, and became more radiant. However, 3 participants withdrew from the study because of skin irritation and rashes after using the products. They also reported that their skin felt dry and that they experienced a stinging sensation after using the facial cleanser. None of the participants reported any other adverse effects. Conclusion: Using Luzstre facial cleanser and moisturizer in combination significantly increased skin hydration, resulting in high satisfaction. This result also indicates the need for potential research, such as a randomized controlled trial with a larger sample size and longer follow-up, for other skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
