        The Effect of pH and Various Cations on the GTP Hydrolysis of Rice Heterotrimeric G-protein α Subunit Expressed in Escherichia Coli

        Previously, we reported the biochemical properties of RGAl that is expressed in Escherichia coli(Seo et al., 1997). The activities of RGAl that hydrolyzes and binds guanine nucleotide were dependent on the MgCl_(2) concentration. The steady state rate constant (k_(cat)) for GTP hydrolysis of RGAl at 2 mM MgCl_(2) was 0.0075±0.0001 min^(-1). Here, we examined the effects of pH and cations on the GTPase activity. The optimum pH at 2mM MgCl_(2) was approximately 6.0; whereas, the pH at 2 mM NH_(4)Cl was approximately 4.0. The result from the cation dependence on the GTPase (guanosine 5`-triphosphatase) activity of RGAl under the same condition showed that the GTP hydrolysis rate (k_(cat)=0.0353 min^(-1)) under the condition of 2mM NH_(4)Cl at pH 4.0 was the highest. It corresponded to about 3.24-fold of the k_(cat) value of 0.0109 min^(-1) in the presence of 2mM MgCl_(2) at pH 6.0.

      • Effects of electroacupuncture on oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic cold hypersensitivity in rats

        This study investigated whether and how electroacupuncture (EA) attenuates cold hypersensitivity (allodynia) in a rat model of oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain. Cold allodynia [evaluated by immersing the tail into cold water (4 A degrees C) and measuring the withdrawal latency] was induced 3 days after an oxaliplatin administration (6 mg/kg, i.p.). EA stimulation (2/100 Hz, 0.3-ms pulse duration, 0.2-0.3 mA) was delivered to ST36 acupoint or non-acupoint for 20 min. Low-frequency (2 Hz) EA at ST36 relieved cold allodynia more effectively than high-frequency EA at ST36 or low-frequency EA at non-acupoint. Naloxone (opioid antagonist, 2 mg/kg, i.p.) completely blocked such EA-induced anti-allodynia, whereas phentolamine (alpha-adrenergic antagonist, 2 mg/kg, i.p.) did not. Moreover, plasma beta-endorphin levels significantly increased right after the end of EA and subsequently decreased. These results indicate that low-frequency EA at ST36 in rats has a marked relieving effect on oxaliplatin-induced cold allodynia that is mediated by the endogenous opioid, but not noradrenergic, system.

      • 반모음 [j]에 대한 최적성이론적 접근

        An Optimality Theoretic Approach to Semi-vowel [j] Jo, Hak-haeng and Seo, Jeong-min(Chonsun Univ.) There have been three kinds of arguments about the status of semi-vowel [j] in Korean within the Korean syllable structure. The three theories, Nucleus Hypothesis, Onset Hypothesis, and Tautosyllabic Hypothesis, consider the semi-vowel [j] in Korean as part of nucleus, onset, and both respectively. Each theory, however, has provided conflicting accounts in reference to analogous evidence. Thus, in this paper we argue that the permission of semi-vowel [j] of Seoul dialect in Korean can be given a functionally grounded treatment by means of *ONSET/X subhierarchy(Smith, 2003: 3) that maintains its universally fixed ranking based on the sonority scale, if the *ONSET/X is defined to be sensitive to the moracity of the segments. And then according to Optimality Theory(Prince & Smolensky, 1993) we will analyse semi-vowel [j] of Seoul and Chonnam dialect in Korean as nucleus. And then the result will be extended to the semi-vowel [j] in English.

        A new device, muscle clamping system was developed to facilitate exact quatifying technique A strabismus surgery, and reduce the risk of complications. The device is composed of a lower fixing body with three jaws and an upper supporting body. They are used to clip an extraocular muscle and fix it to the sclera with a single bite. Superior rectus recession on 16 rabbit eyes were performed with this new device. Conjunctival injection, muscle adhesion strength, and light microscopic findings were examined at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. The Conjunctival injection were minimal, adhesion power ranged from 420 to 600 gram gravity, which is sufficient in withstand the normal pull of human extraocular muscle. In microscopic exam, some Inflammatory cells and fibrosis were found. The new device was technically easy, fast, and accurate, so it may be useful in stabismus surgery.

      • 생체분해성 안과제형의 안구내흡수정도와 안독성

        An improved retinal tack can be used to fix the retina in complicated retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. We used the retinal tack made by biodegradable polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid and copolymers. The tacks with polyglycolic acid were placed in the retina the right eyes of 10 rabbits as group 1, with polylactic-polyglycolic acid copolymers as group 2 in each left eyes. We examined the absorption rates and degree of intraocular inflammation at 1 day, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks and compared both eyes. The tacks were absorbed with time in both eyes, but more rapid in copolymers. And there was no inflammation in both eyes. Now, this study will be a base on the drug delivery system in intraocular pharmacological and surgical management.

        부정교합이 성인 여자대학생의 자존감에 미치는 영향

        Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of malocclusion on the self-esteem of female university students. Methods: The subjects were composed of 67 female university students who showed Class I molar relation, no missing or supernumerary teeth and has had no orthodontic treatment experience. Each subject was evaluated with Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale to measure the level of self-esteem and also evaluated the degree of anterior crowding and lip protrusion through model analysis and cephalometric soft tissue profile analysis. Results: The results showed that a protrusive profile and crowding of upper anterior teeth had significant reducing effects on the level of self-esteem. The protrusion and crowding groups showed no significant differences in self-esteem between groups. Conclusions: Malocclusion had significant negative effects on the self-esteem of female university students. Further research to investigate the negative psychological influence of malocclusion and the education of lay people about this influence is necessary. 본 연구의 목적은 성장이 끝난 성인 여대생들에 있어 가장 흔한 부정교합의 하나인 전치부의 crowding과 입술주위 돌출감이 자존감(self-esteem)에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이다. 연구를 위하여 대학에 재학중인 여자대학생 67명을 대상으로 구강검진과 두부계측방사선 사진촬영, 모형계측을 실시하여 상악전치부의 치아배열과 입술의 돌출도를 평가하였다. 또한 Rosenberg의 자존감 평가 설문조사문항을 이용하여 이들의 자존감을 평가한 후 전치부의 치아배열, 입술주위 돌출도와 자존감 간에 어떠한 관계가 있는지 통계처리 하였다. 실험결과, 입술의 돌출을 가졌거나 전치부의 치아배열이 고르지 못한 학생들은 치아배열이 고르고 돌출되지 않은 안모를 가진 학생들에 비하여 유의하게 낮은 자존감을 보여주었다. 부정교합이 심리적으로 미치는 부정적 영향력에 관하여 더욱 체계적인 연구와 교육, 홍보가 필요하다고 생각한다.

      • 조경설계와 시공의 불일치 조사분석

        The landscape industry, as a field of construction industry, has made much development together with the desire for the beautiful and pleasant environment according to the enlargement of market size, expansion of its scope of operation and national paradigm shift. It has already been placed as a true independent field with much accumulation of technologies and development of new materials for the while etc. However, the correctness of the drawings in design or construction is still error-prone due to non-principle, vagueness and approach with experience-based decisions, rather than scientific and rational approach. Besides, the propriety and accuracy in the construction field have not even been maintained and trial and error might be involved with waster by each cause. Thus, as design and construction involve various types of discordances, studies on the improvement alternatives for those causes and problems are required. The discordance can be classified into three stages; Stage 1. The cause of discordance and problem first appear. Stage 2. The cause of discordance is eliminated and controlled. Stage 3. Discordance conditions are fixed. This study presents the improvement alternatives through theoretical consideration and case studies for the causes of discordance and the stage where the problems appear. The discordance index from the results of analysis was relatively high as 26.47 on the average for the three sites. As for the analysis of each site by types, the common kind addition-type had the highest percentage with 29.8% and the number change-type was 26.43% from the results. Besides, the results of the analysis of detailed factors are listed from the highest, as construction improvement factor(23.23%), actual condition factor(19.3%) and mutual conflict factor between drawings(14.0%). From the results of the analysis of subjects that involve discordances, constructional factor showed a preponderance(63.27%, while the design factor is 36.73%). At present, the actualized discordance index from the results of the analysis of the potentiality was 20.772(78.46%) and the potential discordance index that remained discordant in the drawings was 5.702(21.54%). The problems that were derived from the results of the analysis could be summarized as the quality problem in the drawings, the problems in the construction process and the problems in the process of the design change, and the improvement alternatives for those problems are as followings; ①First, the paradigm shift of the designers, the precise and thorough inspection of the drawings and the liability system for incomplete designs etc. can be considered, and ②Secondly, the importance of the original drawings is required to be understood, as the responsibility is clarified in case of a change and the improvement of the understanding of each subject is needed, and ③Thirdly, those discordances will be prevented in advance when irrational factors in the process of design change, the stage where discordances are controlled, are improved, and unfair intentions including proposal of changes out of principle, expectation of protection from liability of incomplete designs are restrained.
