An Analysis of Trainers' Perspectives within an Ecological Framework: Factors that Influence Mine Safety Training Processes

Haas, Emily J.,Hoebbel, Cassandra L.,Rost, Kristen A. Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2014 Safety and health at work Vol.5 No.3

Background: Satisfactory completion of mine safety training is a prerequisite for being hired and for continued employment in the coal industry. Although training includes content to develop skills in a variety of mineworker competencies, research and recommendations continue to specify that specific limitations in the self-escape portion of training still exist and that mineworkers need to be better prepared to respond to emergencies that could occur in their mine. Ecological models are often used to inform the development of health promotion programs but have not been widely applied to occupational health and safety training programs. Methods: Nine mine safety trainers participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. A theoretical analysis of the interviews was completed via an ecological lens. Each level of the social ecological model was used to examine factors that could be addressed both during and after mine safety training. Results: The analysis suggests that problems surrounding communication and collaboration, leadership development, and responsibility and accountability at different levels within the mining industry contribute to deficiencies in mineworkers' mastery and maintenance of skills. Conclusion: This study offers a new technique to identify limitations in safety training systems and processes. The analysis suggests that training should be developed and disseminated with consideration of various levels-individual, interpersonal, organizational, and community-to promote skills. If factors identified within and between levels are addressed, it may be easier to sustain mineworker competencies that are established during safety training.

      • Alterations in cardiac DNA methylation in human dilated cardiomyopathy

        Haas, Jan,Frese, Karen S,Park, Yoon Jung,Keller, Andreas,Vogel, Britta,Lindroth, Anders M,Weichenhan, Dieter,Franke, Jennifer,Fischer, Simon,Bauer, Andrea,Marquart, Sabine,Sedaghat-Hamedani, Farbod,Ka WILEY-VCH Verlag 2013 EMBO molecular medicine Vol.5 No.3

<P>Dilated cardiomyopathies (DCM) show remarkable variability in their age of onset, phenotypic presentation, and clinical course. Hence, disease mechanisms must exist that modify the occurrence and progression of DCM, either by genetic or epigenetic factors that may interact with environmental stimuli. In the present study, we examined genome-wide cardiac DNA methylation in patients with idiopathic DCM and controls. We detected methylation differences in pathways related to heart disease, but also in genes with yet unknown function in DCM or heart failure, namely <I>Lymphocyte antigen 75</I> (<I>LY75</I>), <I>Tyrosine kinase-type cell surface receptor HER3</I> (<I>ERBB3</I>), <I>Homeobox B13</I> (<I>HOXB13</I>) and <I>Adenosine receptor A2A</I> (<I>ADORA2A</I>). Mass-spectrometric analysis and bisulphite-sequencing enabled confirmation of the observed DNA methylation changes in independent cohorts. Aberrant DNA methylation in DCM patients was associated with significant changes in <I>LY75</I> and <I>ADORA2A</I> mRNA expression, but not in <I>ERBB3</I> and <I>HOXB13</I>. <I>In vivo</I> studies of orthologous <I>ly75</I> and <I>adora2a</I> in zebrafish demonstrate a functional role of these genes in adaptive or maladaptive pathways in heart failure.</P>

Einheit der Sportausübung durch Einsatz von Schiedsgerichten

        ( Ulrich Haas ) 중앙대학교 법학연구원 문화.미디어.엔터테인먼트법연구소 2010 문화.미디어.엔터테인먼트 법 Vol.4 No.2

        Anatomy of Gossamer superconductivity

        Stephan Haas,Kazumi Maki,Thomas Dahm,Peter Thalmeie 한국물리학회 2007 Current Applied Physics Vol.7 No.1

There are many systems in which two order parameters compete with each other. Of particular interest are systems in which theseorder parameters are both unconventional. In this contribution, we examine the representative example of a d-wave superconductorTc superconductors. The physical properties of unconventional superconductivity in the presence of an anisotropic charge density wave are investigatedwithin mean eld theory. This model describes many features that were anticipated by an earlier phenomenological treatment of Tallonand Loram. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states in the presence of these two order parameters is calculated, which should beaccessible by scanning tunneling microscopy

Business As An Innovative Agent Of Change

Elizabeth Haas Edersheim,Young-Chul Chang 피터드러커 소사이어티 2008 창조와 혁신 Vol.1 No.1

The article emphasizes business’s role as a change agent for society, building on Peter F. Drucker’s groundwork and illustrating the potential impact through the Yuhan-Kimberly story. Much of Drucker’s thinking centered on the concept that innovation is the “business” of business. To gain the freedom to innovate, we must abandon the pieces of the business that are or soon will be in irreversible decline and the assumptions that constrain the business, while holding onto core values and competencies. As Peter so succinctly commented: “You can’t throw everything out, or you’ll have anarchy. You can’t hold onto everything, or you’ll die.” The corporation that has innovation in its DNA continually searches for opportunities. Drucker has facilitated this search by directing businesses to seek opportunities from seven key sources: the unexpected; industry and market disparities; incongruities; process vulnerabilities demographic changes; perception and priority changes that shift buying habits; and new knowledge. Identifying opportunities and translating them into pragmatic ideas that aim high enough to secure a future for the company requires discipline – and instilling such discipline is a common challenge for many organizations. Again, Drucker has eased this challenge via his time-tested process for identifying, implementing, and managing innovation. And key to that process is engaging the organization’s people in the never-ending activity that is innovation. Dr. Ilhan New established the Yuhan Corporation in 1926 with a fundamental focus on people – Yuhan’s mission was to provide Korean people with opportunities for education and jobs and to solve public health problems. Kimberly-Clark joined forces with Yuhan in 1970 with the joint venture, Yuhan-Kimberly (Y-K), perpetuating this focus on people. When Y-K’s survival was threatened in 1995, then current CEO Kook-hyun Moon asked Drucker-like innovation questions: “what do we need to abandon so our employees can deliver the most value?” Chairman Moon’s answer was to first flatten the organization to remove 3 non-value-adding layers. This more horizontal structure was built on NEWAY (New Excellent Ways At Y-K) – an innovative organizational model that enabled faster decisions, better communications, and new capabilities. Y-K’s people focus includes disciplined leveraging of innovation ideas from people in all corners of the organization and investment in its employees to create important capabilities. It is this history that led Kimberly-Clark’s decision to co-locate its Innovation Center with Yuhan Corporation’s Central Research Complex.
