FDI Spillover Effects on the Productivity of the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry: Panel Data Evidence

DESAI, Guruprasad,SRINIVASAN, Palamalai,GOWDA, Anil B Korea Distribution Science Association 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.8

The study empirically examines the horizontal spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the productivity of Indian pharmaceutical firms. Robust least squares and the Generalized Method of Moments estimators are applied for the firm-level panel data of Indian pharmaceutical companies whose shares were traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The information was collected from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) Prowess database from 2015 to 2019. Based on the regularity in data availability, the sample firms are limited to 112 companies, 100 of which are domestic firms and 12 international firms. Firms with more than 10 percent foreign equity are classified as FDI firms, while those with less than that are classified as domestic firms. Estimation results show that foreign ownership does not contribute to the productivity of domestic firms. Due to increased competition, the Indian pharmaceutical companies with foreign equity participation are not more productive than local ones. Moreover, the findings reveal a negative and insignificant horizontal spillover effect from FDI on the productivity of domestic enterprises. The absence of horizontal spillovers may be attributable to foreign enterprises' ability to prevent technological outflow to competitors in the same industry.

Modus Operandi: Irrigation of the Modified Eloesser Flap in Heterogeneous Suppurative Lung Pathologies

        Rajkamal Vishnu,Guruprasad D. Rai,Ganesh Sevagur Kamath,Vijaya Kumara 대한흉부외과학회 2021 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.54 No.2

Background: Refractory empyemas with collapsed lung and persistent bronchopleural fistulas pose significant problems to thoracic surgeons and impose a substantial burden in terms of morbidity and mortality. The modified Eloesser flap procedure is a useful palli- ative option for clearing infections. Herein, we present our experiences with the modified Eloesser flap procedure in mixed suppurative lung pathologies with a new technique of irrigation for persistent infection. Methods: A retrospective review was carried out of 56 patients who underwent the modified Eloesser flap with continuous irrigation at Katurba Medical College. These pa- tients had severe morbidities and were not suitable for major thoracic resection surgery, and electively underwent modified Eloesser flap surgery. Regular follow-up was done at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Patients with persistent infections were treated with our continuous irrigation technique. Results: The most important finding was that all patients with active sputum acid-fast bacilli–positive findings became sputum smear–negative during the first month of fol- low-up. Half (50%) of the patients had a patent stoma. Eleven patients had persistent infec- tions, necessitating continuous irrigation. The infection was fully cleared after 1 month in 9 patients, while 2 patients required second irrigation and continued to receive follow-up. In the remaining 50% of the patients, the stoma closed completely, and the lung expanded fully. Conclusion: The modified Eloesser flap is a simple procedure. In suppurative patholo- gies, infections were well controlled and the general condition of the patients improved. Our continuous irrigation method showed promising results in patients with persistent purulent discharge.

Purification and Physiochemical Characterization of Melanin Pigment from Klebsiella sp. GSK

        ( Sajjan,Shrishailnath ),( Guruprasad Kulkarni ),( Veeranagouda Yaligara ),( Kyoung Lee ),( T. B. Karegoudar ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2010 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.20 No.11

A bacterium capable of producing melanin pigment in the presence of L-tyrosine was isolated from a crop field soil sample and identified as Klebsiella sp. GSK based on morphological, biochemical, and 16S rDNA sequencing. The polymerization of this pigment occurs outside the cell wall, which has a granular structure as melanin ghosts. Chemical characterization of the pigment particles showed then to be acid resistant, alkali soluble, and insoluble in most of the organic solvents and water. The pigment got bleached when subjected to the action of oxidants as well as reductants. This pigment was precipitated with FeCl3, ammoniacal silver nitrate, and potassium ferricynide. The pigment showed high absorbance in the UV region and decreased absorbance when shifted towards the visible region. The melanin pigment was further charecterized by FT-IR and EPR spectroscopies. A key enzyme, 4- hydroxyphenylacetic acid hydroxylase, that catalyzes the formation of melanin pigment by hydroxylation of Ltyrosine was detected in this bacterium. Inhibition studies with specific inhibitors, kojic acid and KCN, proved that melanin is synthesized by the DOPA-melanin pathway.

Dynamic Cell Reconfiguration Framework for Energy Conservation in Cellular Wireless Networks

        손규호,Ranjini Guruprasad,Santosh Nagaraj,Mahasweta Sarkar,Sujit Dey 한국통신학회 2016 Journal of communications and networks Vol.18 No.4

Several energy saving techniques in cellular wireless networkssuch as active base station (BS) selection, transmit powerbudget adaptation and user association have been studied independentlyor only part of these aspects have been considered togetherin literature. In this paper, we jointly tackle these three problemsand propose an integrated framework, called dynamic cell recon-figuration (DCR). It manages three techniques operating on differenttime scales for ultimate energy conservation while guaranteeingthe quality of service (QoS) level of users. Extensive simulationsunder various configurations, including the real dataset ofBS topology and utilization, demonstrate that the proposed DCRcan achieve the performance close to an optimal exhaustive search. Compared to the conventional static scheme where all BSs are alwaysturned on with their maximum transmit powers, DCR cansignificantly reduce energy consumption, e.g., more than 30% and50% savings in uniform and non-uniform traffic distribution, respectively.

Dynamic Friction of Polyester Air-jet Textured Yarns

Rengasamy Raju Seenivasan,Guruprasad Raghavendran,Asis Patnaik The Korean Fiber Society 2005 Fibers and polymers Vol.6 No.2

In this paper, friction of air-jet textured yams is investigated. Using a friction measuring apparatus fabricated inhouse, dynamic friction forces of the yams under yarn-to-metal (YM) and yam-to-yam (YY) rubbing modes are measured. The influence of processing variables of air-jet texturing viz., overfeed, air pressure, dry/wet texturing and normal/core-and-effect texturing on dynamic friction is analysed. The results indicate that friction force increases with increasing rubbing speeds and yam input tension. YM dynamic friction decreases initially and then starts to increase at higher overfeeds. YY dynamic friction increases with increasing overfeed. YM dynamic friction decreases with an increase in air pressure while an opposite trend is observed for YY friction. Wet textured yams have higher friction than dry textured yams. Core wetted coreand-effect textured yams have higher friction than normal textured yams.

        PARTITIONS AND LABELED TREES

        R. RAJENDRA,P. S. Guruprasad,K. BHARGAVA,P. SIVA KOTA REDDY 장전수학회 2021 Proceedings of the Jangjeon mathematical society Vol.24 No.2

In this paper, we present a new representation of partitions of positive integers using labeled trees. Labeled trees representing a partition of an integer n is called a partition-tree of n. We discuss some results involving partition-trees, energy of an integer with respect to partition-trees, and gracefulness of the default labeling of partition trees.

Model-based, Distributed, and Cooperative Control of Planar Serial-link Manipulators

        S. Soumya,K. R. Guruprasad 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2021 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.19 No.2

In this paper, we propose a novel distributed control scheme for a planar serial-link manipulator with revolute joints. The control scheme is based on the conventional model-based nonlinear control scheme that achieves linearization by feedback. A dedicated controller controls each joint of the manipulator, as in the case of the decentralized manipulator control scheme. However, in the proposed control scheme, the joint-level controllers communicate and cooperate to account for the nonlinear dynamic coupling between the links. The proposed control scheme can achieve the performance level of that of the model-based nonlinear control scheme, and at the same time, reduce the computational lead-time by distributing the computational load associated with the control law among the joint-level controllers. We design a distributed cooperative control law for a three-link planar manipulator and demonstrate its trajectory tracking performance using simulation experiments.

2D-VPC: An Efficient Coverage Algorithm for Multiple Autonomous Vehicles

        Vishnu G. Nair,K. R. Guruprasad 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2021 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.19 No.8

In this paper, we address a problem of multi-robotic coverage, where an area of interest is covered by multiple sensors, each mounted on an autonomous vehicle such as an aerial or a ground mobile robot. The area of interest is first decomposed into grids of equal size and then partitioned into Voronoi cells. Each robot/sensor is assigned the task of covering the corresponding Voronoi cell. We propose an optimal gridding size and partitioning methodology that eliminate the coverage inefficiencies induced by the partitioning process. We carried out experiments using multiple quadcopters and mobile robots to demonstrate and validate the proposed multi-sensor coverage strategy.
