This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1173.2 keV, and 1332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.

Objectives: We evaluated and recorded post-traumatic and postoperative neurosensory deficits of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in mandibular fracture in order to identify associated risk factors. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study composed of 60 patients treated for mandibular fracture. The primary study variable was the change between the post-traumatic IAN neurosensory examination score and the score after fracture reduction. Risk factors were categorized as demographic, anatomic, fracture displacement, and treatment. Appropriate descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed. Results: Sixty patients with unilateral mandibular fracture reported within 24 hours of injury were evaluated over a one-year period. A post-traumatic neurosensory deficit was observed in 52 patients (86.7%), the percentage of which was reduced to 23.3% over the follow-up period. Abnormal postoperative neurosensory scores were significantly higher in angle fracture cases (33.3%) compared to body fracture cases (11.1%). When recovered and non-recovered neurosensory scores were compared by fracture location, 88.9% of body fracture cases showed significant recovery compared to 66.7% of mandibular angle fracture cases. Cases with less than 5 mm fracture displacement showed statistically significantly higher neurosensory recovery scores (90.6%) compared to those with more than 5 mm fracture displacement (60.7%). Conclusion: Use of a miniplate with mono-cortical screws does not play a role in increasing IAN post-traumatic neurosensory deficit. Early management can reduce the chances of permanent neurosensory deficit. Mandibular fracture displacement of 5 mm or more and fracture location were found to be associated with an increased risk of post-traumatic IAN neurosensory score worsening.

Plant derived natural products have been the major source for treatment of diseases traditionally but with the advent of modern systems of medicine, there is need to explore the active constituents present in it followed by modification for better therapeutic activity, low toxicity and favorable pharmacokinetics to become a drug molecule. A simple, rapid and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC– MS/MS) method was developed and validated according to Food and Drug Administration guidelines for determination of IS01957, a derivative of naturally occurring para coumaric acid in mice plasma. The extraction of the analyte and the internal standard (Carbamazepine) from the plasma samples involved protein precipitation using acetonitrile. Results of validation parameters were met with the acceptance criteria of the FDA guidelines. Method was highly sensitive (5 ng/mL) that could determine very low concentration of compound in plasma The developed and validated method was successfully applied to determine compound’s metabolic stability in mouse liver microsomes (MLM) and human liver microsomes (HLM). Test compound was found to be stable in MLM and HLM in the experimental conditions. Metabolic stability data was extrapolated which was further correlated to pharmacokinetics study in mice through oral, intraperitoneal and intravenous administration. In-vitro half life was found to be greater than 2 h in both MLM and HLM. Hepatic extraction ratio of the compound was found to be in the intermediate range. Pharmacokinetic evaluations revealed that it is a suitable candidate for intraperitoneal as well as oral administration.
