The role of CD24 in epithelial tumor of the gastrointestinal tract
Lim, Sung-Chul,Jeong, Gul-Ae,Lee, Yong,Choi, Jung-Eun,Quan, Duong Hong 朝鮮大學校 附設 醫學硏究所 2006 The Medical Journal of Chosun University Vol.31 No.1
Background and Aim: CD24 is a small heavily glycosylated glycosylphosphatidylinositollinked cell surface protein, which is expressed in hematologic malignancies as well as in a large variety of solid tumors, It appears to function as a ligand of P-selectin, an adhesion molecule that is present in activated platelets and endothelial cells. The authors aimed to evaluate CD24 protein expression in adenoma and adenocarcinoma of stomach, colon and gallbladder to correlate to clinicopathologic data. Methods: The staining was evaluated as stain intensity (negative, weak-, moderate-, strong-positive) and staining patterns (membranous vs. intracytoplasmic) for statistical analysis. Results: CD24 was abundantly expressed on adenocarcinoma rather than on adenoma in colon. Moreover, the intensity of CD24 expression increased with positive nodal status in the advanced gastric carcinoma. A highly significant association of intracytoplasmic CD24 expression with adenocarcinoma of the colon and gallbladder compared to the adenoma group of those organs, respectively and with positive nodal status compared to negative nodal status of the colonic adenocarcinoma were demonstrated, Conclusions: The authors conclude that the intensity and staining pattern of CD24 is an important molecular marker for various epithelial neoplasms that could help to define malignant transformation and to prediet lymphogenous metastasis.

Various forms of fermented soybean products are well documented for their health benefits. The efficacy of anti-obesogenic effect of Doenjang, one of the most commonly used seasonings in Korean cuisine, has been reported only in animal models; thus, an evaluation of Doenjang needs to be conducted in human studies. We aimed to test the hypothesis that Doenjang supplementation reduces body weight and changes body composition in overweight adults. A total of 51 overweight adults participated in this study. A group of males with BMI ≥ 23 kg/㎡ and waist to hip ratio (WHR) ≥ 0.90, and a group of females with BMI ≥ 23 kg/㎡ and WHR ≥ 0.85 were randomly assigned to either a Doenjang supplement (9.9g dry/day) group or a placebo group for a 12-week randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study. Anthropometric parameters, abdominal fat distribution by computerized tomography (CT) and blood components were measured before and after the intervention period. After the 12-week study, the Doenjang supplementation group had significant reductions in body weight (kg), body fat mass (kg) and body fat (%) compared to the placebo group, the supplementation of Doenjang resulted in a significant reduction in visceral fat (㎠), although no changes were observed in total and subcutaneous fat are as (㎠), serum lipid profiles and dietary intakes. The present study demonstrated that daily supplementation of 9.9g dry/day of Doenjang for 12 weeks reduces body weight and visceral fat in overweight adults.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) seeded on multilayered poly (Llactide- co-e-caprolactone) (PLCL) sheets improve bladder function in a rat model of detrusor smooth muscle-removed bladder. METHODS: Male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: Normal, injury (detrusor smooth muscle-removed bladder), PLCL (detrusor smooth muscle-removed bladder implanted with PLCL sheets), and PLCL ? ADSC (detrusor smooth muscle-removed bladder implanted with PLCL sheets seeded with hADSCs). Four weeks after the treatment, physiological, histological, immunohistochemical, and immunoblot analyses were performed. RESULTS: hADSCs were compatible with PLCL sheets. Further, the physiological study of PLCL ? ADSC group showed significant improvement in compliance and contractility suggesting the functional improvement of the bladder. Histological, immunohistochemical and immunoblot analyses revealed the uniform distribution of hADSCs in between PLCL sheets as well as differentiation of hADSCs into smooth muscle cells (SMC) which is illustrated by the expression of SMC markers. CONCLUSION: hADSCs seeded on the multilayered PLCL sheets has the potential to differentiate into SMC, thus facilitating the recovery of compliance and contractility of the injured bladder.

There has been a marked increase in the utility of aspiration cytology for pathologic diagnosis. It may be applied to any kinds of organs and substitutes surgical biopsy. Be cause of the high risk of complication and difficulties In localization, aspiration cytology in the central nervous system (CNS) has been used with less frequency compared to other sites. However, with the advent of sophisticated imaging instruments, aspiration cytology of lesions in the CNS is being used increasingly. We present cytologic features of brain tumors as well as corresponding histologic findings. Eight types of tumors were aspirated intraoperatively and stained with the Papanicolaou method; 1 anaplastic astrocytoma, 1 glioblastoma multiforme, 1 ependymoma, 1 malignant ependymoma, 1 central neurocytoma, 1 primitive neuroectodermal tumor, 1 benign neurogenic tumor and 1 germinoma. Cytologic features of the CNS neoplasms were quite similar to those of histology except one spindle cell tumor. Reviewing various CNS neoplasms, it appears that cytology may be a useful diagnostic method.
